COURT: Broughton man fined and banned for drug-driving
Mark Hughes, of Wellington Road in Broughton, appeared at Mold Magistrates Court on Thursday morning.
The 41-year-old admitted two offences of driving a motor vehicle in Buckley when the proportion of a controlled drug exceeded the specified limit, as well as possession of cannabis.
Prosecutor Rhian Jackson told the court that at around 11.45pm on January 10 this year, police on patrol in Buckley went along Victoria Avenue, where they spotted a silver Seat Leon.
It was stationary and idling opposite some flats, and the driver (Hughes) appeared "hunched over the steering console."
The officers watches as the vehicle moved forward a short distance before halting again, and went to speak to him.
There was a strong smell of cannabis from the vehicle, and when a search was carried out, a bag of the substance was discovered in the driver door.
When his samples were analysed, Hughes was found to have more than 400 microgrammes of Benzoylecgonine (a cocaine breakdown product also referred to as BZE) per litre of blood - the limit being 50.
He was also found to have 35 microgrammes of cocaine per litre of blood; the limit being 10.
Ms Jackson told the court Hughes had 20 previous convictions for 36 offences; among them relevant drink and drug drive offences.
Laura MacMillan, defending, told the court: "He accepts he took cocaine, but not before driving. This was left in his system from earlier use.
"Mr Hughes has previously worked with probation and believed he benefited from their intervention as much as he could.
"This is a blip in him trying to turn his life around.

Brisbane teacher is charged after allegedly grooming multiple children
A teacher has been denied bail following accusations he groomed multiple children. Jayden Robert Carey, 30, was charged with 25 offences against children this week after Queensland Police allegedly discovered incriminating images on his devices. Carey was dismissed from his job teaching in Brisbane after he was charged with soliciting photos from several children in Tasmania and transferring them money. He fronted Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday for his bail application and the court heard Carey allegedly identified 'all the children' he is accused of abusing in a recorded police interview. Acting Magistrate Nigel Rees claimed there was strong evidence against Carey. 'He was in a position of trust and a position of authority and he's taken advantage of that,' Mr Rees said, the Courier Mail reported. Legal aid duty lawyer Lana Millar argued strict bail conditions would mitigate any risk Carey posed to the community. Among the suggested conditions was having no contact with children. Ms Millar added her client had no prior criminal history. Mr Rees determined the allegations against Carey were 'very serious' and denied his bail application. The matter was adjourned for mention on July 14. Carey is facing six counts of grooming children under 16 by facilitating procurement of a child to engage in a sexual act, and three counts of grooming children under 12 by facilitating procurement of a child to engage in a sexual act (child or fictitious). He is also accused of nine counts of using the internet to procure children under 16, three counts of using the internet to procure children under 12, and one count each of possessing child exploitation material, using a carriage service to solicit child abuse material, attempting to use a carriage service to solicit child abuse material, and possessing tainted property.

Rhayader man harassed ex through TV and ring doorbell camera
A POWYS man harassed his ex-girlfriend by speaking to her through her ring doorbell camera and logging into her television to post obscene messages. Over a month-long period in January, Jamie Hughes bombarded his ex with emails, followed her around Llandrindod Wells and threatened to slash her car tyres, leaving her filled with 'anxiety and dread'. Following their break-up, Hughes moved out their home but would access her ring doorbell via his phone and try to speak to her. He accessed her TV while she was in the house and left an obscene message on the screen, leaving her fearing she was being constantly watched via camera in her home. Hughes, 30, admitted a charge of harassment without violence before Llandrindod Wells Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, June 3. The charge states Hughes, of Maes Brenin, Rhayader, pursued a course of conduct which amounted to the harassment, in that he sent inappropriate messages, unwanted and threatening emails and followed her. Prosecutor James Sprunks said Hughes was reported to police for harassment after the relationship ended on January 4. 'She asked him to remove himself from the app and give her the log-in details, but he refused," Mr Sprunks said. "He would contact her through the camera, asking to speak to her. 'He would ask her 'Who you seeing' and told her 'I know you had a lad around last night'. 'She also employed him for a week after the break-up but he kept contacting her for unrelated matters so she had to make him unemployed. 'He would send her abusive and urgent 'call me' emails. She repeatedly told the defendant she didn't want any contact. 'On one occasion she accidentally ordered a takeaway using his bank details. He wanted his money back and she said she would, on condition that he send her the log-in details. 'He told her 'If you don't give me the money back I'll slash your tyres'.' Mr Sprunks said Hughes was even able to access his victim's TV via an app, and left an offensive message. 'He was accessing the TV through an app. The TV would randomly turn itself off. 'She would go to work at a hotel and would often see him walking past. He would then send an email asking who she was meeting. He followed her into a car park once. 'She blocked the defendant on all platforms, but she couldn't on email. He hacked her Facebook account and blocked various friends and family. 'She said she always feels he's watching her through the cameras, which made her feel distressed.' Mr Sprunks read out a victim impact statement which said: "This has caused me the worst anxiety I've ever felt. 'I hope one day I can recover from this and he will understand the impact he's had and how much he's damaged my life.' Michelle Thomas, representing Hughes, asked magistrates for a pre-sentence report to be prepared. 'He has an elderly grandmother who he cares for and he has information to give to the probation service,' she said. Magistrates ordered the report and told Hughes to return to court for sentence on June 24.
