Security tightened at Paradip port after ship arrives with 21 Pak crew
The Odisha Police on Wednesday beefed up security at port town Paradip after the arrival of a ship with 21 Pakistani crew members on board, officials said.
The MT Siren II' with a total of 25 crew members reached Paradip port early on Wednesday from South Korea via Singapore, carrying crude oil for Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, they said.
Security arrangements have been tightened by Odisha Marine Police and the CISF after receiving information about the crew members from the Immigration Department, said Marine Police Station inspector in-charge Babita Dehuri.
The Paradip port had been put on high alert in the wake of the military conflict between India and Pakistan.
The ship is anchored at PM berth', located around 20 km from the shore, and has 11,350 metric tonnes of crude on board, the officials said.
Orders have also been issued that no crew will be allowed to leave the ship during evacuation of the crude oil, the police officer said.

Zeeshan Akhtar, an alleged key conspirator in the murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique, has been 'arrested' in Canada, Maharashtra minister of state for home, Yogesh Kadam said on Wednesday. Akhtar (22) was held in a fake passport case. 'Zeeshan, who was involved in the Baba Siddiqui murder case, has been arrested in Canada. We have initiated the process to bring him back to India. We will interrogate him further (after bringing him back),' Kadam told the media. Punjab Police had named Akhtar, 22, as a key conspirator behind the grenade attack on senior BJP leader and former state minister Manoranjan Kalia's house in the wee hours on April 7. No one was injured in the attack. Punjab Police special director general of police Arpit Shukla had named Akhtar as the key accused. He was also booked for a grenade attack on YouTuber Rozer Sandhu's house on March 16. However, the grenade didn't explode. As per Mumbai police, jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi's brother Anmol Bishnoi had given a contract to Zeeshan Akhtar and Shubham Lonkar to carry out the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader's murder. Siddique, a former Maharashtra minister, was shot dead in Bandra area on October 12, 2024. Police have arrested at least 25 persons in the case so far. The crime branch of the Mumbai police began an investigation into a video of Zeeshan Akhtar, a prime accused in the murder of Nationalist Congress Party leader Baba Siddique in February, in which he claimed to have secured asylum in a foreign country with the help of Pakistani gangster Shehzad Bhatti. Akhtar, an alleged key conspirator in the Siddique murder, claimed in the video that Bhatti had helped him escape from India after the Mumbai Police launched a manhunt for him. He said that Bhatti, whom he called his 'elder brother' in the video, had helped him secure asylum in an unknown country, outside Asia. Police confirmed that the person seen in the video, which was circulated widely online, is indeed Zeeshan Akhtar but were investigating other details. Siddique was shot dead on a busy street in Bandra East on October 12 last year. There were three shooters present but it was Shiv Kumar Gautam, henchman of gangster Anmol Bishnoi, brother of incarcerated gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who had fired the shots that killed Siddique. Police confirmed that the person seen in the video is Akhtar but added that they would have to verify its authenticity and the time at which it was recorded. 'It seems that someone purposely circulated the video on social media. We have been trying to find out where it originated,' said a senior police officer. Akhtar and Gurmail Singh, one of the three shooters recruited to kill Siddique, were one-time jail-mates in Jalandhar, in Punjab. Akhtar was moved to another jail in Jalandhar but not before he had discussed the Siddique murder with Gurmail Singh and told him he would soon have a task for him. 'We believe Zeeshan is still in India and that someone released that video of him. We are investigating the authenticity of this video, said the police official. The video of Akhtar has been posted on Shehzad Bhatti's social media accounts, which also feature a 19-second video of him talking with Lawrence Bishnoi. This video, released is June 2024, also went circulated widely on social media. Apart from Akhtar, a native of Jalandhar, police have identified Subham Lonkar, who ran a dairy in Pune, as the other key conspirator, who executed the plan allegedly hatched by Anmol Bishnoi. Both Akhtar and Lonkar are considered close confidants of Anmol Bishnoi and were allegedly tasked with Siddique's murder in May last year. Soon after planning and arranging for the shooters and their accommodation in Mumbai, both of them disappeared from their respective last-known addresses around a month before the high-profile murder took place. A senior police officer said Akhtar and Lonkar were both last traced to Nainital in Uttarakhand in September 2024. Meanwhile, the Mumbai Crime Branch filed a 4,590-page chargesheet in the Siddique murder case on Monday. The chargesheet names 26 individuals arrested in connection with the murder and identified three wanted suspects, including Anmol Bishnoi, Zeeshan Akhtar, alias Mohammed Yasin Akhtar, and Shubham Lonkar. Police described the three of them as key conspirators in the high-profile killing. Investigators also alleged that Anmol Bishnoi, the leader of an organised crime syndicate, orchestrated the murder 'to establish supremacy in Mumbai.'

Espionage case: Hisar court rejects YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra's bail plea
A Hisar court on Wednesday denied bail to YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, who was arrested last month on espionage charges. A day earlier, Jyoti's lawyer Kumar Mukesh had filed the bail application and the matter was placed before judicial magistrate first class Sunil Kumar today, who rejected the bail plea. On June 9, the court extended her judicial custody by two weeks till June 23. On May 26, Jyoti was sent to 14-day judicial custody by the court. Talking to HT over the phone, her lawyer Kumar Mukesh said that he had objected to the sections imposed against Jyoti Malhotra in the first information report (FIR). 'As the investigation is currently underway in the case, the police were against her bail plea. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail plea. She went to Pakistan High Commission in Delhi in 2023 and at that time, the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was in force but the Hisar police booked her under Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act, which was Section 124-A (sedition ) under the IPC at that time. This section was kept in abeyance, which is why she can't be prosecuted this,' Kumar added. He said that the FIR was registered on the basis of her questioning on May 15, which is not legally permissible because a person can't become a witness against himself/herself. 'The police could not place any evidence which proves that she was involved in spying. The Hisar superintendent of police (SP) himself said that she had no access to any military or defence related information but she has connections with some Pakistani operatives. If they have not recovered any information from her possession related to sharing sensitive information, then Sections 3 (spying) and 5 (communicating secret information to unauthorised individuals) of the Official Secrets Act, should be dropped from the FIR. The police should provide call details with such operatives. The police will have to prove that any of her Pakistani contacts are intelligence operatives,' he added. Travel blogger Jyoti, 33, a resident of Hisar, was arrested on May 16 for allegedly sharing sensitive information with Pakistani operatives.

State police see progress across units
1 2 Bhubaneswar: As the Mohan Majhi govt marks its first year in office on Thursday, the Odisha police has seen significant progress across several areas, including staff recruitment, equipment upgrades, technological improvements, training enhancement, digital forensics and counter-insurgency operations throughout the year, according to a booklet, titled '1 year many milestones' compiled by the information and public relations (I&PR) department. As per the govt booklet, at least 8,271 new posts were sanctioned in the home department to further strengthen the law and order situation in the state. According to police sources, of those 8,271 posts, at least 4176 are meant exclusively for the state police force across various police ranks. "Besides 2,500 new positions in the home guard division has been created. Additionally, 2,000 positions were established in the traffic division to handle urban traffic management across the state," the booklet read. The govt's priority to fortify the state police force was reaffirmed by the chief minister during inauguration of a new office building of the DCP here on Tuesday. "Our govt has accorded focus to strengthen Odisha police, which succeeded in maintaining law and order in the last one year. To improve the operational capabilities of police personnel, we have provided them with new vehicles and investigation kits. The current fiscal saw a further increase of 26.6%, reaching Rs 7,063 crore. Considering the state's expanding industrial activities and security requirements at various industrial centres, Majhi recently announced the formation of an additional Odisha Industrial Security Force battalion. To strengthen anti-Maoist operations, Majhi announced in Jan a substantial increase in the monthly 'risk allowance' for Special Operations Group (SOG) personnel, elevating it from Rs 8,000 to Rs 25,000. The SOG, established within Odisha Police in 2004, specialises in counter-terrorism and extremist operations. "Three new Odisha special security battalions have been raised to support anti-Maoist operations," a senior police officer said. Amid Indo-Pak tensions, govt enhanced Odisha police's readiness by establishing an anti-terrorism unit and acquiring two bulletproof armoured vehicles with light machine guns mounted on their roofs. The state police acquired advanced drones for the first time to enhance coastal security operations and counter potential maritime threats. "The govt has sanctioned about Rs 150 crore to strengthen the coastal security wing. At least 350 retired navy personnel have been engaged for coastal security. A command and control centre will soon be set up, adding teeth to our coastal security wing," the police officer said. Cybercrime investigation received priority attention during the past year. The govt announced 20 new cyber police stations while upgrading 14 existing ones. The police force underwent substantial modernisation during the last one year. Police stations received investigation equipment including laptops, smartphones, and hard disks to enhance investigative capabilities. For the first time about Rs 50 crore budget was allocated for officers' investigation expenses. "Each police station received new vehicles and motorcycles to ensure swift emergency response. Recently, 247 forensic officer positions were created to enhance the criminal justice system, in accordance with forensic evidence requirements outlined in the newly implemented criminal legislation," the senior police officer said.
