"Only thing I have in my head...": Djokovic intends to defend men's title at LA 2028 Olympic Games

India Gazette5 hours ago

New Delhi [India], June 16 (ANI): Former World No. 1 tennis player Novak Djokovic said that defending his Olympic title in Los Angeles in 2028 is the 'only thing' that is keeping him motivated in the sport.
Great Britain's Andy Murray remains the only player to have defended an Olympic singles title. Serbia's Djokovic would be 41 by the time he can do the same in the LA 2028 Olympic Games.
Despite managing his workload with noticeably fewer tournaments in recent seasons, the 24-time Grand Slam champion told football manager Slaven Bilic that he wants to play in his sixth Games, having won singles bronze on his debut at Beijing 2008.
'The only thing that, at this moment, professionally speaking, I have in my vision at this point. It's interesting when we talk about these achievements and the Olympics that stand out and redemption; the only thing that I have in my head that gives me motivation is the Olympics of 2028 in Los Angeles. Playing for the national team and Grand Slams. But not even the Grand Slams, not as much as the Olympics,' Djokovic said in an interview as quoted by Olympics.com.
The 38-year-old's victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the Paris 2024 final completed his quest to win every major accolade the sport can offer.
That includes winning all four Grand Slams, the Davis Cup, the ATP Finals and every Masters event.
Tennis at LA 2028 will be hosted at the Tennis Center in Carson, which is currently a USTA high-performance training base.
In the recently concluded French Open 2025, Djokovic lost to world number one Jannik Sinner in the semifinals. Sinner defeated three-time French Open winner and 100-time tour-level titlist 6-4, 7-5, 7-6(3). (ANI)

FEI cancels equestrian events in India due to non-payment of dues

New Delhi: In Amanpreet Singha development that will hurt the riders and the development of equestrian sport in the country, at least 24 domestic and international tournaments have been cancelled due to non-payment of dues to the world governing body, FEI, by the Equestrian Federation of India (EFI). It has been learnt that EFI was supposed to pay about Rs 27 lakh to the FEI officials as remuneration and allied charges for various events held between January and March 2025. However, the federation's account stands frozen due to the infighting among the warring factions, leading to non-payments of dues, forcing FEI to take off the events from the calendar. The EFI also needs to settle accounts for unpaid salaries, various costs of tournaments hosted in the past year and other expenses running into almost two crore. 'EFI was supposed to pay remuneration to FEI officials for various Eventing, Show Jumping and Dressage events held in Delhi, Meerut, and Jaipur. However, the bank has frozen the account due to different factions within the Federation claiming operational access,' an EFI source told PTI. 'It is embarrassing and the athletes are the biggest losers here, but that is the situation. The sports ministry has been apprised of the latest infighting,' the source added. The EFI was supposed to hold its election in September 2023 but litigations delayed the polls, following which a Committee of Administrators (CoA) was appointed by the Delhi High Court on May 21, 2024. The decision was challenged and, on May 29, the court reinstated the Executive Committee of the EFI as an interim measure, keeping in mind the participation of Indian riders in the Paris Olympics. The EC, in a meeting on April 11, 2025, without the presence of court-appointed observer SY Quraishi, decided to suspend Colonel Jaiveer Singh as secretary general of the Federation. Quraishi directed the EC to get the order approved from the court before its implementation. Colonel SS Ahlawat moved the court on May 5, seeking approval. However, the application was rejected on May 7 since the decision was not conforming to the law. 'The faction that removed the secretary general notified the development to FEI and also claimed the ownership of the bank account before getting the approval of the court. The bank then froze the account due to multiple stakes,' the source said. When contacted, Col. Jaiveer Singh confirmed the development.

Ron Taylor cause of death: How the former member of Mets' 1969 World Series team passed away?

Ron Taylor, World Series Champion Turned Team Doctor, Passes Away at 87 (Michael Karas/ Ron Taylor, a two-time World Series champion and one of the key relievers behind the New York Mets' unforgettable 1969 title run, passed away on Monday at the age of 87 after a prolonged illness. Known for his poise under pressure and dedication to excellence, Taylor's contributions extended far beyond the mound. Dr. Ron Taylor died Monday at age 87 in Toronto after a lengthy illness During his 11-year MLB career, Taylor wore the jerseys of five different teams—Cleveland, St. Louis, Houston, New York, and San Diego. It was with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1964 that he first experienced championship glory. But his most iconic moment came in 1969 with the "Miracle Mets." Taylor was a steady presence in the Mets' bullpen from 1967 to 1971, posting a 3.04 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and securing 50 saves over 269 games. In the 1969 season, his performance peaked. He led the team with 59 appearances, recording 13 saves and a 2.72 ERA. One of his defining moments came in Game 2 of the World Series against the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles. With two runners on base, Taylor coolly retired Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson, sealing a critical 2-1 win for New York. 'Ron was the only guy on our staff with postseason experience,' teammate Art Shamsky reflected in a statement issued by the Mets. 'He had won a championship with the Cardinals in 1964 and brought a winning mentality. We don't win the title without Ron Taylor.' After his retirement from baseball, Taylor chose a path rarely taken by professional athletes. He returned to Canada and enrolled in medical school at the University of Toronto, earning his degree in 1977. By 1979, he found his way back into baseball—this time as the Toronto Blue Jays' team physician, a position he held for more than three decades. Taylor's legacy was celebrated with his induction into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985. He later became part of two more World Series-winning teams as a physician during the Blue Jays' back-to-back titles in 1992 and 1993. Ron Taylor's life was a rare blend of athletic excellence and medical service—a legacy that leaves a lasting mark both on and off the field. No free swimming as NDMC pools need urgent repair

New Delhi: Unlike previous years when New Delhi Municipal Council offered free coaching to students at its three major swimming pools during the summer, the facilities cannot be accessed this year. The three prominent pools, also managed by NDMC, are located at Mandir Marg, Sarojini Nagar and Laxmibai Nagar, and each facility attracts 100 to 150 young students during the summer. According to officials, there was a desperate need for detailed repair work at these sites before opening them for students. "These facilities have not been repaired for a long time. There are broken tiles and damages at various places such as side periphery, stairs, etc. The civil department needs to carry out detailed repair work. Until the work is completed, we have decided not to open the facilities for students this year," said an NDMC official. For years, NDMC ran the facilities for free lessons for the students staying in the areas under its jurisdiction during the summer. "However, a fee of Rs 500 per month is charged from students residing outside the jurisdiction of NDMC. No outsider and no member staff is permitted to utilise the services at these swimming pools," an official said earlier. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play Chess on Your PC, Free Play Classic Chess Install Now Undo The council claimed to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of students during swimming classes, which are conducted in morning and evening shifts. Unlike NDMC, Delhi Development Authority has made swimming pools accessible across various locations in the city to provide relief from the heat. The authority manages a network of 17 sports complexes featuring swimming pools for public use, and it has opened them after obtaining fresh permissions. They include swimming facilities at Saket Sports Complex, Yamuna Sports Complex, Netaji Subhash Sports Complex at Jasola, Dwarka Sports Complex Sector 11, Rohini Sports Complex, Major Dhyan Chand Sports Complex, and Hari Nagar Sports Complex. "These seasonal pools typically remain operational until the end of Sept," said an official. DDA also maintains all-weather swimming pools, such as at Siri Fort Sports Complex, which remain functional for 10 months annually—from Feb 1 to Nov 30. A maximum of 80 participants are allowed in one session at big DDA pools of Olympic size (25x50 metres) and 40 pools of small size (12.5x25 metres). The swimming coaching charges are Rs 1,250 per person per month in summer.
