Caldwell targets top-half finish for Exeter City

BBC News17-04-2025

Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell says his side are capable of a top-half finish in League One.The Grecians have lost just two of their past 11 games - to second-placed Wrexham and fourth-placed Stockport County - and are 15th in League One, three points off 12th-placed Lincoln City. They face relegation-threatened Burton Albion and Crawley Town over the Easter period before ending the season against Huddersfield Town and Mansfield Town. "I think it can be done. It can be done and that's the most important thing," Caldwell told BBC Radio Devon about a top-half finish. "That's what we're focusing on, we want to try and win every single game."I think we have four different games, the first one being the toughest by far in my opinion, but we have four games and we want to try and win every one, and to finish in that top half would be an incredible achievement."Caldwell's side are 10 points clear of the relegation places and are set for a fourth-successive season in League One.It will be the first time the club has achieved such a feat under fan ownership - they last spent four consecutive seasons in the third tier in the early 1990s."I think you always want to be in a position of control and controlling your own destiny," added Caldwell. "This year, fortunately, we've never been down in that bottom four, last year I think we had one week in it."I think that's great credit to a club that our budget is in that bottom four every year and to only have spent one week in it in the last two seasons shows the progress we're making as a club and shows the progress we're making as a team."So I'd always liked to be that team that is in control and looking higher up the table than worrying what's below."

Hamilton Accies goalkeeper exits after frustrating spell

Charlie Albinson joins Reghan Tumilty, Sean McGinty and Nikolay Todorov out the door at Accies Hamilton Accies have parted company with goalkeeper Charlie Albinson as boss John Rankin gets set to begin preparations for their League One campaign. The Accies boss will return from holiday tomorrow and it is expected the club will be able to finalise their list of retained and released players in the coming days. ‌ Lanarkshire Live Sport understands Albinson, 28, had a relegation release clause in his contract and is already working on a move to a new club. He joins a list of players to be released in the last few weeks, including SPFL Trust Trophy final hero Reghan Tumilty. Defender Sean McGinty has left to join local rivals Airdrieonians and striker Nikolay Todorov has also departed. ‌ Englishman Albinson joined Accies from Ayr United last summer and made 21 appearances. He fell out of favour at New Douglas Park and his last outing for the club came back on January 28 in a 3-0 home defeat to Raith Rovers. Where Hamilton Accies are playing league games next season is yet to be confirmed with the SPFL still to ratify the club's tenancy agreement with North Lanarkshire Council to play at Broadwood Stadium on a temporary basis. Accies announced in May they were leaving New Douglas Park after failing to secure a deal to buy the stadium from its current owners. Accies will play their 'home' games in the Premier Sports Cup next month at K-Park in East Kilbride after a deal was struck to host matches there while a new pitch is laid at Broadwood over the next few weeks. Rankin's men are due to travel to Lowland League side Caledonian Braves on June 20 for their first pre-season friendly, the same day the SPFL fixtures will be released. The clash is one of four pre-season friendlies planned although a full list hasn't yet been released by the club. Bellshill Athletic have announced they will play an Accies XI on Wednesday, July 9.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney face up to £13.4billion reality after Wrexham promotion

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney face up to £13.4billion reality after Wrexham promotion Wrexham have achieved huge success under Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, but now face a tough test in the Championship, where many clubs are well-backed Wrexham co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds are facing up to the financial reality of the Championship (Image: PA ) Wrexham's Hollywood owners are facing a stark new financial reality as the club prepares to compete in the Championship next season. The new campaign will mark the first time in 43 years that the Red Dragons have played in the second tier after previously spending four seasons in the old Second Division between 1978 and 1982. A lot has changed since then, with plenty of money floating around thanks to lucrative TV deals and parachute payments on offer for newly-relegated Premier League sides. ‌ Many club owners are also very wealthy in their own right, with one part-owner boasting a net worth stretching to an astonishing £13.4billion. Wrexham's co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are hardly short of money themselves. ‌ The two A-listers have an estimated combined net worth of around £295m ($400m) thanks to their acting income and business investments. However, even their fortunes pale in comparison to the Championship's biggest hitters. As the North Wales outfit prepares for life in the second tier, WalesOnline looks at how Reynolds and McElhenney's wealth stacks up to that of their rival owners. QPR are often highlighted at the top end of the scale in terms of their owners' combined net worth, with their main shareholders being Ruben Gnanalingam, Richard Reilly and Amit Bhatia. Bhatia is the son in law and a representative of steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, who alone is said to be worth £13.4bn, according to Forbes. Article continues below Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna will be well-backed next season (Image: PA ) Not too far behind are American investment fund Gamechanger 20 Ltd, who own newly-relegated Ipswich, with reports valuing the firm at a staggering £10.8bn. Another well-backed side are Leicester, who also recently dropped out of the Premier League, with the Srivaddhanaprabha family worth approximately £2.7bn. Meanwhile, Bristol City owner Steve Lansdown holds a wealth of £2.3bn, and Stoke City custodian John Coates is said to have £2.2bn. At the bottom end of the table in terms of their net worth are Watford's Gino Pozzo (£93m), Millwall's James Berylson (£110m) and Hull City's Acun Ilicali (£147m). ‌ The combined net worth of Reynolds and McElhenney would therefore place Wrexham in a lower mid-table position in the Championship. However, they do have an ace up their sleeves in the form of the Allyn family from New York, who came on board as minority owners of the club in October. That was until September 2015 when the firm was sold to Hill-Rom in a deal reported to be worth just under £1.5bn at current rates . The Allyns have since turned their focus to investing in private and public markets, and Wrexham have received several large cash injections since their arrival. It's hope their involvement will help Reynolds and McElhenney achieve their dream of taking the club into the Premier League. Deadpool star Reynolds restated that goal in the wake of Wrexham's promotion from League One, which was confirmed after a 3-0 home win over Charlton in April. ‌ Sign up to our newsletter!
