‘Heartbroken': North Shore fire department mourning unexpected death of active-duty captain
A fire department on the North Shore of Massachusetts is mourning the unexpected death of an active-duty captain.
Rockport Town Administrator Mitchell Vieira and Rockport Fire Chief Mark Wonson announced the passing of 43-year-old Fire Captain Andrew Porter on Memorial Day.
Porter died at Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester, surrounded by loved ones, Vieira and Wonson said.
'We are heartbroken and mourning the loss of Capt. Andrew Porter — a dedicated firefighter, trusted leader, and beloved member of our Rockport Fire Department family,' Wonson said in a statement. 'His passing leaves a deep void in our hearts and our community, and we'll carry his memory with us every day.'
Vieira added, 'Our hearts are with Capt. Porter's family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,' said Town Administrator Vieira. 'His service to Rockport reflected the very best of this community, and we all deeply feel his loss.'
Porter is survived by his wife, two daughters, parents, and sister.
Arrangements for Porter have not yet been announced.

They prompted GPT-4 to identify combinations of the drugs that could possibly have a significant impact on breast cancer cells. The drugs that the AI was prompted to look for were also meant to be widely available, affordable, and already approved by regulators. Considering how many different types of cancer treatment options we've seen in recent years, this approach makes a lot of sense. It also opened some new doors, according to the researcher's findings, which are published in the Journal of Royal Society Interface. We've seen a huge increase in researchers and doctors turning to AI to try to come up with new treatment options for old problems, including an AI that can identify autism. So it isn't that surprising to see researchers once more turning to AI to help speed up scientific progress. It seems to have worked, too. According to the findings, the researchers tested the combinations suggested by the GPT-4 'scientist' and found that three of the 12 combinations worked better than current breast cancer drugs. They then fed that information back to the AI, which created four more combinations, three of which also showed a lot of promise. Of course, relying wholly on AI-designed cancer treatment plans isn't something doctors are likely to do immediately. More trials and research are needed to fully test the efficiency of these drug combinations. Testing will also need to be done to ensure there aren't any adverse side effects from combining these drugs over extended periods of time. But for those fighting cancer right now, research like this is promising and could one day help scientists find even better treatment options. And even if the AI hallucinates, the information it gives may spark a new idea that scientists hadn't thought of before. AI will never replace doctors, no matter how hard Google and others push for a future involving AI doctors. But by relying on AI to speed up research, scientists can potentially unlock new options they might not otherwise find for decades to come. ‘This kind of behavior will not be tolerated': Hampton police investigating shots fired reports
The Hampton Police Department has launched an investigation following reports of shots fired in town. Police say that on Thursday night, around 7:35 PM, officers were dispatched to the area of Ocean Boulevard and G Street to the sounds of shots fired. Numerous officers quickly responded and set up a perimeter and closed down the area. Police were able to locate a firearm and take a person matching the description of a suspect into custody. 'Tonight, several officers ran toward the sound of gunfire and quickly rendered the area safe.' Said Hampton Chief Alex Reno. 'I'm thankful that there were no injuries and thankful for the officers who did not hesitate to immediately respond to the threat. While these situations are extremely rare, this kind of behavior will not be tolerated, and those involved will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.' At this time, police say there is no threat to the public and that some parts of Ocean Boulevard have been reopened.
