Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. (MRPL) distributed motorised three-wheeler scooters costing ₹21 lakh to 19 persons with disabilities (PwD) in Mangaluru on Friday.
The scooters were handed over during the inaugural function of Praja Soudha at Padil, which was attended, among others, by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
The initiative, under the company's corporate social responsibility, aims to empower beneficiaries by enhancing their mobility and enabling greater self-reliance in day-to-day activities and livelihood efforts. Most of the recipients were from the surrounding villages of MRPL.
M. Shyamprasad Kamath, managing director of the company, and Maneesh Nayak, District Disability Officer, were among those who were present during the handing over ceremony, an MRPL release said on Saturday.

From pedals to pastures: Bicycle dock turns into cattle post in Mysuru

Mysuru: A bicycle docking station in west Mysuru has become a makeshift cattle post where locals regularly tie their cattle and livestock. This has failed to catch the attention of the authorities concerned. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now BN Nagendra, an RTI activist, said it is an indication that chief minister Siddaramaiah's significant project has been neglected by local authorities. The purpose of the project was to encourage non-motorised vehicles and cut down pollution. On the contrary, it appears that a docking station in Vinayaka Nagar near Mathru Mandali Circle, where the bicycles were supposed to be stationed, was shut, and the place is being used by residents to tie cattle and livestock. Launched in 2016 In 2016, Siddaramaiah launched Trin-Trin, a public bicycle-sharing project, a first in India, with the aim of reducing carbon footprints. The project, which started as a pilot, received a positive response from the public as residents started using bicycles. Thousands of residents took memberships and used bicycles to travel between distances. Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) is the implementing authority of the project. MCC deputy commissioner (development) KJ Sindhu said the project was given to an agency for the operation and maintenance of bicycles. The project was renewed with the addition of battery-operated bicycles. Unlike earlier, a user is now allowed to keep or take the bicycles to their places for a specific period. Earlier, when the project commenced, users had to lock the bicycles at any of the docking stations after use, and charges were fixed based on the time of use. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The officer said MCC would check the misuse of the docking station in west Mysuru. Will verify: MCC officer Trin-Trin project coordinator and MCC development officer, zone-1, Chethana said they would verify why the docking station has become defunct and is being used to tie cattle. Chethana said under the project, there are about 48 docking stations from where users can unlock the bicycles and then return them at any of the docking stations. As of now, about 360 battery-operated bicycles are in use in Mysuru city. The project coordinator explained that bicycle operation and maintenance was given to a private agency, and they would verify the complaint from the public in this regard.

5k poverty-free villages, 16 smart cities: State's devpt agenda this yr

Jaipur: Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma Tuesday directed officials to lift Below Poverty Line (BPL) families out of poverty from 5,000 villages in the first phase of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Gareeb Mukti Gram Yojana. The direction came during a review meeting on implementation of the 2025-26 state budget. "This is not just about infrastructure; it is about transforming lives. The poor, farmers, women, and youth are at the heart of our budget. Every department must work in synergy to bring real change," he said. The CM also laid out an urban roadmap under which 16 cities will be developed as Clean and Green Cities—modelled after the Smart City Mission. These cities will see upgraded infrastructure, improved sanitation, greenery, pedestrian-friendly roads, and overall beautification. "These cities must become examples of what a modern, liveable Rajasthan can look like," Sharma said, adding that newly formed 65 urban local bodies will also be equipped with waste processing units. With Rajasthan home to world-renowned tourist and pilgrimage sites, Sharma stressed the need for stronger air connectivity. Plans include developing helipads and introducing helicopter services to ease access and encourage tourism. Sharma reiterated that all budgetary announcements must be completed within a defined timeframe. He instructed departments to prepare detailed work plans and execute them in phases. Any delay, he warned, would be met with strict action. "If a foundation stone is laid under our govt, the inauguration should also happen during our tenure. Every promise must be fulfilled on time," he said. Emphasising transparency and quality, Sharma directed departments to ensure physical verification of road construction and other major works. He called for close coordination between electricity, water, and PWD departments.

Karnataka to seek time with PM over Almatti issue

The Karnataka government will seek time with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil to discuss the issue of the Almatti reservoir across the Krishna in view of the objection raised by the Maharashtra government over raising the dam's height. 'After Chief Minister Siddaramaiah responds to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's letter, I will seek time from the Prime Minister and the Jal Shakti Minister,' Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar told presspersons here on Tuesday. In the next two days, Mr. Siddaramaiah is expected to reply to the objection from the Maharashtra Chief Minister, he said here, after inspecting the venue where Kempe Gowda Jayanti is to be held this year. Mr. Shivakumar said, 'We will also share the Chief Minister's letter with all the members of Parliament [from the State] so that they can take it up in the House. We will seek an appointment with the Prime Minister after that. It is important that all of us safeguard the State's interests together.' Meanwhile, he said the government would lay the foundation stone for the Kempe Gowda Development Authority on June 27 and celebrate Kempe Gowda Jayanti. A museum on Kempe Gowda will also come up on the allotted land, he said. 'Our local leaders have suggested swapping the allotted land with the land belonging to the Social Welfare Department since it also has an auditorium. A railway line will also pass through this place, and a station will be built there. This will be taken up in the Cabinet meeting,' he added. Asked if the land was too far from the city, he said, 'Bengaluru has grown now, where else can we allot the land? No one is willing to part with the golf course and racecourse.'
