2 books celebrating New York City culture and community win the Gotham Prize

Independent19-05-2025

This year's winners of the Gotham Book Prize celebrate New York City as experienced on foot, bus and train.
Ian Frazier, author of 'Paradise Bronx: The Life and Times of New York's Greatest Borough,' and Nicole Gelinas, who wrote "Movement: New York's Long War to Take Back Its Streets from the Car,' will split the $50,000 in prize money given for books that 'encourage and honor writing about New York City,' award officials announced Monday.
Philanthropists-political strategists Bradley Tusk and Howard Wolfson cofounded the Gotham prize in 2020 as a 'way to uplift the creative community' during the pandemic.
In 'Paradise Bronx,' Frazier draws upon his years of walking about the New York City borough and weaves together everything from Revolutionary War history to baseball and hip-hop. Gelinas' 'Movement' continues the tradition of such classics as Robert Caro's 'The Power Broker' in documenting how New Yorkers have fought for the preservation and improvement of mass transit.
'This year, we are proud to award the Gotham Book Prize to two outstanding works of non-fiction that combine rigorous research with a unique point of view to illuminate the rich and complex history that makes New York City great,' Tusk and Wolfson said in a statement.
Previous notable Gotham Book Prize recipients
2021: James McBride, 'Deacon King Kong.'
2022: Andrea Ellott, 'Invisible Child.'
2023: John Wood Sweet, 'The Sewing Girl's Tale,' and Sidik Fofana, 'Stories from the Tenant Downstairs.'
2024: Colson Whitehead, 'Crook Manifesto.'

Hugh Jackman, 56, larks around with his much younger co-star, 25, after eyebrows are raised over their racy sex scenes in new play

is currently starring in a play with 25-year-old Ella Beatty and on Wednesday the pair were seen larking it up during rehearsals. The Wolverine actor, 56, shared some photos to social media which captured him and Ella hamming it up during a break. Hugh had his arm wrapped around the budding actress, who is the daughter of Hollywood legend Warren Beatty, and he beamed from ear to ear as he gave the camera a thumbs up. Meanwhile, Ella was all smiles as she pointed to the logo on her shirt, which read: 'New York's Real Aussie Embassy.' Hugh captioned the photos with some amusing words: 'Ella agrees!' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. It follows reports that Hugh is turning up the heat on stage - as he continues to date his new girlfriend, Broadway actress Sutton Foster. In the intense play Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes, Jackman plays Jon, a three-time divorced, middle-aged college professor and novelist who dives into a forbidden relationship with his 19-year-old student Annie, played by Ella Beatty. The Wolverine star doesn't hold back in the provocative off-Broadway show — swearing up a storm, getting graphic about sex, and locking lips in multiple steamy make-out scenes with Ella. Foster, 50, even made a backstage appearance this week, trying to quiet whispers that their new relationship has been on shaky ground since going public in January. But the show's raunchy moments can't be easy to watch for Foster, as Hugh and Ella frequently kiss — at one point making out on a desk as a scantily clad Ella wraps her legs around him. Adding more fuel to the gossip mill, fresh photos of the pair holding hands during the curtain call have sent tongues wagging. The two beamed with pride, looking completely at ease with the intimate gesture. It's not just the steamy make-out scenes turning up the heat — Hugh also unleashes a barrage of expletives, including blunt, graphic lines about a college cheerleader 'sucking his c***' It follows reports that Hugh is turning up the heat onstage - as he continues to date his new girlfriend, Broadway actress Sutton Foster The play digs into messy questions of consent and power, with Annie, a smitten student hooked on Jon's steamy novels, chasing his attention, while Jon battles temptation, a failing marriage, and the fallout of getting involved with a student. Offstage, Hugh's own split from Deborra-Lee Furness seems to mirror the emotional storm. The actor, who has only been married once, announced his split from Deborra-Lee Furness, 69, in September 2023 after 27 years of marriage. In a joint statement at the time, they said they were 'shifting' and had decided to 'separate to pursue our individual growth.' The couple share two adopted children, Oscar, 24, and Ava, 19. Hugh and Sutton's relationship reportedly overlapped with the end of his marriage. The two had been friends for years in the same theatre circles but only went public after they were photographed holding hands earlier this year.

Bill Belichick's close friend 'deeply concerned' about Jordon Hudson's influence over UNC football

One of Bill Belichick 's closest allies is reportedly 'deeply concerned' about Jordon Hudson's involvement in the UNC football program. Hudson, Belichick's 24-year-old girlfriend who has firmly embedded herself in his professional life, was reportedly banned from UNC's football facilities - as Pablo Torre claimed last month. UNC refuted Torre's report, though said Hudson would 'continue to manage all activities related to Coach Belichick's personal brand' outside of the school. And while Torre has already said that the legendary coach's family was 'digging into' Hudson, his UNC GM and longtime friend Michael Lombardi is also apparently worried about her presence. 'What if I told you that [Belichick's] inner circle of actual coaches on staff, including a certain Mike Lombardi, is deeply concerned about Jordon Hudson and her presence in the building?,' Torre said on the latest episode Bill Simmons Podcast. Lombardi, a longtime football executive and analyst, previously worked under Simmons at The Ringer, and served as an assistant to Belichick's New England coaching staff from 2014-16. Torre wondered aloud whether Simmons may have spoken with him Lombardi recently, but Simmons declined to divulge any information. While Belichick and Hudson's relationship became public last year, the scrutiny around it has reached a fever pitch since she was seen inserting herself into his CBS Sunday Morning Interview. Interviewer Tony Dokoupil described her as a 'constant presence' throughout the session, in which CBS cameras captured her vetoing a question about how she and Belichick met. An email publicized by The Assembly also provided insight into her influence in Belichick's professional life, as the coach had asked for her to be copied on all emails sent to him by UNC staffers. It also emerged via several reports that her desire to be involved in the iconic HBO 'Hard Knocks' series curtailed the cameras' involvement in Belichick's work at the school. All of that led Belichick's family to reportedly grow worried about the ex-Patriots coach's relationship with Hudson, as Torre reported the coach's loved ones were 'digging into' her amid fears she could tear down 'everything he's built,' citing an unnamed source. Belichick, won six Super Bowls in New England as head coach, signed a five-year, $50million contract with UNC. And Daily Mail exclusively reported in April that Hudson had quietly amassed a $9million real estate portfolio. Torre's appearance on Simmons' show came as the Ringer founder and Spotify executive ripped into the former's reporting of the Belichick and Hudson saga. 'I've never seen anybody dine on a stupider story for a week and a half while pretending you're a journalist,' he said on a recent episode of his 'The Rewatchables' podcast. 'What the f*** was that? Seriously.' The die-hard Patriots fan also said: 'Belichick's dating a girl. 'Oh, let me do nine shows about it,'' Simmons, a Boston native, said, mocking Torre. 'Settle the f–k down … You don't need to do a media tour about a f***ing podcast.' Torre responded on social media, challenging Simmons to have a conversation with him - which they ultimately did as they hashed things on on the latter's eponymous podcast. While UNC have maintained that Hudson is not banned from their facilities - a rebuttal to Torre's original reporting which he refuted again - there has been a change to the school's communications staff. The school recently hired former Bears PR Director Brandon Faber amid the negative press it was receiving, and he was seen accompanying Belichick as he left an interview with Good Morning America.
