WEAPONS are being seized every day in schools across Scotland, shocking police figures reveal.
A record 248 'tools' such as knives were confiscated in 2024 — equating to at least one a day across the 190-day term.

It is nearly double the previous recorded high of 169 seizures in 2018.
The details emerged after The Scottish Sun revealed cops are probing claims a P3 boy aged seven took a blade into school to attack a pupil at Heathfield Primary in Ayr.
Police Scotland data shows weapons found last year included 137 knives or other blades, including 33 used in crimes beyond possession.
A total of 111 other weapons were found, including 76 used to commit further crimes.
The data reveals a situation more than twice as bad as that laid out by Justice Secretary Angela Constance last month.
She only disclosed 109 weapons used in other criminal activity — omitting 139 seized before being wielded.
Scottish Labour's education spokeswoman Pam Duncan-Glancy said: 'Teachers have been sounding the alarm for years that violence in schools is getting out of control but SNP ministers still aren't taking the crisis seriously.'
Her Tory counterpart Miles Briggs hit out: 'There's an epidemic of classroom violence thanks to the SNP's repeated failure to tackle the issue.
'Education Secretary Jenny Gilruth must act now to stamp out weapons in schools instead of dithering and passing the buck to councils and police.'
More than 1,200 weapons have been seized in schools since 2019, the police stats show.
In 2024, Glasgow had the highest number of seizures, at 28.
Aberdeenshire had 27 despite a far smaller population.
Edinburgh had 22 and Aberdeen 20.
Ms Gilruth was slated for skipping parly questions on school violence last month to campaign for the SNP in a council election.
Her no-show came hours after an alleged knife attack on a 12-year-old girl at Aberdeen's Hazlehead Academy.
The Scottish Government said: 'We are investing £6million to implement the Violence Prevention Framework to address youth violence, carrying of weapons and violence in schools."

The instructions are being stuck to meters and prompt drivers to scan and pay for parking. But the fake codes actually redirect drivers to a website mocked up to look like the real operator, where bank details are then harvested. Perth and Kinross Council reminded motorists not to scan them and insisted that RingGo never take parking payments by QR code. The operator only takes payments through the official app, which uses a secure, encrypted service. The local authority reported the stunt and said that parking attendants are regularly checking the machines for the stickers. Any codes found are being removed, and any drivers who come across them are being asked to report them to the council. Perth and Kinross Council shared a post about the scam on social media to alert locals. The message on Facebook reads: "Scam Alert: Beware of Fake RingGo Parking Websites. "Using the RingGo app is a safe and convenient way to pay for parking in Perth and Kinross. I was SCAMMED out of £100s by hidden sticker parking fee con - know the signs "However, please ensure you only download the official app from the App Store or Google Play. "Remember, RingGo never uses QR codes for parking payments. The official app allows you to pay via a secure, encrypted service. "If you spot any QR codes claiming to let you pay for parking, or see any websites asking for parking payments that don't direct you to the official app, please do not use them. "Report these to us at: parkingservices@ Stay safe and protect your personal information!" In the comments, staff added: "The team have been checking our machines and any detected QR Codes will be removed. "They will also continue to monitor the situation. Thank you." Users flocked to the comments to share their frustration at the scam, with many urging the council to revert to cash-only parking meters. One person said: "This is valuable advice. Take notice. We fell for the barcode scam, and got signed up to a random service for £100s." Advice for victims of fraud POLICE Scotland has issued some advice on what victims of fraud can do if they think they have been compromised. They said: "If your bank or credit card accounts have been compromised contact your bank and tell them you suspect you have been the victim of a fraud. "If you receive correspondence from companies about applications or accounts that you do not recognise, contact the relevant companies immediately and advise them. "Report the fraud to Police Scotland on 101. Keep a note of any telephone numbers, emails or other correspondence you have had with the fraudster. "Consider contacting a credit reference agency to review your credit report. If you notice any unauthorised activity contact the organisations involved, as soon as possible. "If you have been a victim of fraud be aware you details might be sold on to other fraudsters who might make contact with you in an attempt to make you part with more money. This is most common in the case of victims of share scams. "Fraudsters often call up the victim of such a scam advising they can get their money back for a fee.' Another added: "Bring back cash only. Will stop all scams". Someone else wrote: "Shambles - coins are safer". A fourth posted: "This is good advice for anything QR Code related. Never use a QR code that you cannot be absolutely sure is genuine." While a fifth chimed in: "That's why it's better if they stick to cash!" It's not the first time that similar schemes have been discovered across the UK. In June last year, another QR parking scam was discovered in Aberdeen. And Charity Action Fraud revealed it had investigated 1,200 cashless parking scams between 2020 and January 2024.

Limerick Garda breaks silence after acquittal in 'nightmare' corruption case
A Garda has broken his silence over a seven-year long probe led by the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (GNBCI) that failed to convince a jury he had done wrong. Speaking after the jury in his eight-day trial returned 'not guilty' verdicts last Friday, vindicated Garda Tom Flavin, Rathkeale Garda Station, said: 'The last seven years have been a nightmare for me and my family.' Advertisement Gda Flavin had denied 22 allegations that he had attempted to pervert the course of justice by trying to frustrate criminal prosecutions against individuals, including for driving without insurance. Senior counsel Fiona Murphy, prosecuting in Gda Flavin's trial alleged in court that the evidence would show he had 'sorted out' uninsured drivers by deliberately inputting insurance details into the Garda Pulse computer records system to try to frustrate the potential prosecutions. The jury unanimously disagreed and dismissed the allegations which had flowed from an expensive and top-level GNBC investigation probe that began in 2018. Garda Flavin and his solicitor Dan O'Gorman, have asked why Gda Flavin was brought to trial, when, as his trial heard, there was 'no direct evidence' against him, as it was put by Ms Murphy in court. Advertisement In a statement provided by Mr O'Gorman following the verdicts, Gda Flavin said: 'My elderly unwell parents attended during most of the trial and to witness them in such anxiety and obvious distress will haunt me for a long time.' Garda Flavin said he wished to thank his colleagues as well as members of the Garda Representative Association (GRA) 'for all their support'. 'I love and respect my job but I wish that certain quarters would investigate crime in places where crime actually occurs.' 'The whole case asks serious questions of standards and leadership at the upper levels of the Garda force.' Advertisement Near the end of the trial, the jury were directed by trial judge, Colin Daly, to find Gda Flavin not guilty on five of the 22 charges and to deliberate on the remaining 17 counts on the indictment. It took the jury just over three hours to reach unanimous acquittals. In a sharp rebuke of the GNBCI probe, Dan O'Gorman stated: 'Sometime before October 2018 the most equipped and resourced branch of An Garda Síochána, the GNBCI rolled out an investigation of Rathkeale Garda Tom Flavin in relation to the idea that he was perverting the course of justice in preventing certain named individuals being prosecuted for serious driving offences including driving without insurance.' 'The full resources of the investigation were deployed. In October 2018, his family home was searched, personal possessions seized. He was suspended. His reputation was shredded,' Mr O'Gorman said. Calling for an examination of the GNBCI's probe of Gda Flavin, the solicitor added: 'For seven long years he and his family have been in a wasteland of isolation and suspicion Always, he held his head up and protested his innocence. He is today the man he always was — The innocent Tom Flavin.' 'Serious questions have now to be asked of this elite branch of the Gardaí as to how all of this could have possibly been visited on an innocent man and his family,' Mr O'Gorman added. During the trial Gda Flavin's barrister, senior counsel Mark Nicholas, had argued that the prosecution had no smoking-gun evidence against Gda Flavin and he asked the jury to dismiss the allegations. Fiona Murphy, prosecuting, had told the jury that the case against Gda Flavin was anchored on 'circumstantial' evidence. In the statement provided by his solicitor afterwards, Gda Flavin said: 'The whole case asks serious questions of standards and leadership at the upper levels of the Garda force.' Speaking after the trial, Garda Frank Thornton, Garda Representative Association Limerick Division, a former president of the association, said: 'I welcome the jury's verdict as it totally vindicates Garda Flavin of any wrongdoing, but there is now a bigger question that requires an answer: why would it take almost seven years for this case to reach conclusion?' 'This member, like many of his colleagues, has spent years trying to clear his name with a dark cloud of unfair dishonour hanging over him.' Garda Thornton said cases involving Garda members should be dealt with quickly to ensure 'the health and wellbeing of our members, but also to rebuild trust in the communities they serve'.

Sarwar says surprise by-election win could help Labour back to power at Holyrood
Mr Sarwar and his party celebrated in the early hours of Friday morning after Labour's Davy Russell was elected as the new MSP for Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse, winning the seat from the SNP. With the votes showing a swing of more than 7% from the SNP to Labour, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said on Friday the result showed people have 'voted for change'. The by-election had been held following the death earlier this year of Scottish Government minister Christina McKelvie. When the votes were counted, Mr Russell polled 8,559, SNP candidate Katy Loudon took 7,957 votes, while Reform's Ross Lambie secured 7,088. And although Mr Russell was elected with fewer votes than Labour secured in the seat in the 2021 Scottish Parliament election, the SNP's support fell from just over 46% of all ballots then to 29.35% in the by-election. Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice insisting they were 'delighted' with coming third – despite speculation prior to the count that they could come in second or may even pull off a surprise victory. Labour's win came after Scotland's First Minister John Swinney – who made numerous campaign visits to the area – had declared the contest to be a 'two-horse race' between the SNP and Nigel Farage's Reform. But speaking at a media event in Hamilton on Friday morning, Mr Sarwar accused the SNP leader of running a 'disgraceful' campaign. Mr Sarwar also insisted the by-election could 'help lead the way' to him becoming Scotland's next first minister in the May 2026 Holyrood elections. The Scottish Labour leader said he believed the victory to be 'even more significant' than the party's win in the nearby Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election in October 2023 – which he said had been key in helping to secure Labour's general election win in July last year. Mr Sarwar declared: 'I think in some ways this by-election result is even more significant than the Rutherglen by-election result two years ago. 'It is right to say, I believe, the result in Rutherglen helped lead the way in helping to elect a UK Labour Government and I also believe the by-election result here will help lead the way to elect a Scottish Labour government next year.' Looking ahead to that election, Mr Sarwar told the PA news agency: 'I want us to gain scores of seats across the country so we can remove this SNP government from office.' He went on to accuse Mr Swinney of running a 'disgraceful campaign' in the by-election, saying that despite the SNP having been in power for 18 years, 'the best he had to offer was 'vote SNP to stop Farage''. And while Reform UK came in third in the by-election, Mr Sarwar said Mr Farage's party could not win the Scottish Parliament elections. He insisted: 'Nigel Farage is not standing to be first minister. 'It is a straight choice – it is either going to be John Swinney, or it's going to be me.' The Scottish Labour leader continued: 'The choice is stark next year. Our Parliament is not about protests, our election is not about protest, it is about choosing a government here in Scotland. 'The choice is stark – a third decade of the SNP with John Swinney as first minister or a new direction for Scotland with me as first minister.' However, Mr Tice told BBC Radio 4's that the result in Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse was 'truly remarkable'. He said: 'We've come from nowhere to being in a three-way marginal, and we're within 750 votes of winning that by-election and just a few hundred votes of defeating the SNP, so it's an incredible result.' Mr Swinney, meanwhile, said the SNP was 'clearly disappointed' with the result. The party leader said Labour had 'won by an absolute landslide' in Rutherglen and Hamilton West – noting the SNP 'came much closer' this time round. But he added: 'The people of Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse have made clear that we still have work to do. 'Over the next few days, we will take time to consider the result fully.'
