NIOSH Ready To Help Train Heavy Vehicle Drivers Using Specific Training Module

PUTRAJAYA, May 15 (Bernama) -- The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is ready to help train heavy vehicle drivers using a specific training module, which emphasises safe and prudent driving techniques.
NIOSH vice-chairman G. Manivanan said the specific training module was developed by experts and industry players by taking into account the needs and challenges faced by the drivers.
"The programme, which was developed under the Safe and Defensive Driving Person (SDDP) training module, also covers aspects of road legislation, vehicle maintenance and road management which aim to raise awareness and prevent accidents among heavy vehicle drivers.
"The module that was developed by NIOSH has already been implemented by several companies which manage buses and heavy vehicles in a bid to increase their workers' skills and knowledge of safety aspects on the road,' he said in a statement today.
As such, he hopes that others operating heavy vehicles would also implement the SDDP training programme, including government agencies and the private sector.
He added that NIOSH is also ready to assist those involved in implementing safety audits as well as taking tighter safety measures, including the implementation of the HIRARC (Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Risk Control) method.
Manivanan said HIRARC is a systematic method that is used to help employers and employees identify hazards, assess risks and implement control measures to maintain safety and health aspects in the workplace.
"By adopting HIRARC, all parties can play an important role in ensuring the workplace remains safe and healthy while complying with the relevant laws.
"I wish to stress again that under the law, every employer is responsible for ensuring the safety and health of their employees during work, including ensuring the vehicles used are properly maintained while the drivers get sufficient training,' he said.

"I've always loved travelling, so I needed a way to do it without spending a lot. At the same time, I wanted to break away from my daily routine and explore new things,' he told Bernama. He said the vehicle modifications were done over four years, inspired by YouTube content from travellers abroad who converted their vehicles into mobile homes. Muhammad Harith said he had spent nearly RM40,000 to fully equip his Pajero for long-distance travel. The sum included repainting, engine repairs and interior modifications to ensure his mobile home functioned properly. "Only after that did I feel confident enough to travel around the entire Peninsular Malaysia. I started (my journey) in Perlis and made my way south to Johor, which was my last destination before returning to Kelantan,' he said, adding his vehicle did not encounter any major issue. Although the vehicle is fitted with a gas stove and basic amenities, the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak graduate said he preferred dining at local eateries as a way to experience the food and culture of each state. "I love eating local food because it helps me understand the culture. Every state has its own unique flavours,' he added. Besides discovering new places, Muhammad Harith viewed his trip around the peninsula as an opportunity for self-reflection, using the alone time to better understand his strengths and weaknesses. Sharing more about the experience, Muhammad Harith, who is self-employed, said one of the biggest challenges of being 'Abe Pajerolife' was making sure he arrived at each destination before 6 pm, as he is not comfortable driving at night. "Driving alone makes one feel drowsy easily. Since I had experienced microsleep previously, I didn't want to take any risk (during the trip). So, I would set off after dawn and aim to arrive (at my destination for the day) by evening,' he said. An avid camper, especially around Malaysia's east coast area, Muhammad Harith said during his journey, he also faced other challenges such as running out of electricity - leaving him to sleep in the heat - as well as contending with eerie disturbances in remote areas. Sabah, S'wak JPJ kiosks offer road tax renewals
PUTRAJAYA: Motor Vehicle Licence (road tax) renewals for individual private vehicles can be carried out at Road Transport Department (JPJ) kiosks in Sabah and Sarawak starting today. JPJ, in a statement, said the renewal service will be available at 41 kiosks; 21 in Sabah and 20 in Sarawak. This service, however, applies only to private vehicles registered from 2020 onwards. 'For individual private vehicles registered before 2020, owners or their representatives must go to the JPJ counters for renewal,' it said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported. In addition, renewals can also be done via the MyJPJ app, mySIKAP JPJ portal, JPJ mobile counters, and JPJ strategic partners. Vehicle owners are also advised to ensure their motor insurance coverage is valid and active before renewing their road tax at JPJ kiosks as the system will automatically verify insurance details during the transaction.
