Israeli military shoots at aid seekers again near new distribution site, pick-up points remain closed

Mada5 days ago

Thousands of Palestinians who headed to the Israeli-controlled aid distribution zone in southern Gaza on Wednesday did not receive any supplies as the centers remained closed to the public throughout the day, eyewitnesses told Mada Masr.
Instead, Israeli drones opened fire on them again, injuring dozens and killing at least four near the Morag corridor, where the new distribution site is located. Aid seekers were told to return home until they are informed of the center's reopening.
Wednesday marked the second day of the US-based Gaza Humanitarian Foundation's operations in an area Israel has designated for a new aid distribution program it has sought to install to replace existing mechanisms.
In its first day of operations, Israeli forces stationed near the distribution site conducted at least 13 arrests before opening fire on crowds of people who rushed toward the boxed supplies, while GHF evacuated its staff. The Gaza Government Media Office described the operation as 'an absolute failure.'
Thousands of Palestinians headed to the aid distribution center in western Rafah on Wednesday, eyewitnesses who were seeking aid told Mada Masr. The center is based near Morag, the bulldozed corridor zone established by the Israeli military to separate Rafah from the rest of southern Gaza. The area was known among locals as the Muharrarat route or Miraj Street, and was dubbed Morag in the period from 1967 until 2005 during which Israel maintained settlements in the Gaza Strip.
When they arrived, they found Israeli military vehicles awaiting them near the corridor. Israeli drones opened fire on the crowds to disperse them, the eyewitnesses said.
Several aid seekers were injured and an elderly Palestinian woman was killed in the attack, an eyewitness, Nasser al-Louh, told Mada Masr. At least three more aid seekers were killed by Israeli fire at the site, Palestinian outlets reported.
Israeli drones then began to broadcast a recording over loudspeakers ordering residents to retreat to their homes and await messages informing them of the center's reopening date, Louh added.
The Civil Defense Directorate in Gaza announced on Wednesday that its ambulance services are currently unable to operate in Rafah. The agency stopped its operations in Gaza's southernmost city in March, when Israeli forces invaded the area, breaking the ceasefire.
The directorate stated on Wednesday that it faces obstacles in transporting the injured and dead from Rafah to hospitals, saying it is currently forced to move them in civilian and animal-drawn vehicles.
Similar scenes ensued on Tuesday when the new distribution points opened for the first time. Lengthy inspections meant that the thousands who had gathered to receive aid grew tired of waiting in areas enclosed with wire mesh under the scorching afternoon sun.
A crowd ultimately broke through the gates and rushed toward the aid boxes to seize them, at which point the distribution company, GHF, evacuated its staff while Israeli forces stationed nearby opened fire on aid seekers.
Israeli forces injured about 50 Palestinians and killed an unspecified number on Tuesday inside and around the aid distribution center in Rafah, according to Palestinian newspaper Al-Ayyam, which added that a number of victims remain at the scene and have not yet been recovered.

Suspect in Custody after 6 People Burned in Colorado

Taarek Refaat FBI Director Kash Patel announced Sunday that the bureau had received information about a terrorist attack in Boulder, Colorado, and was conducting a comprehensive investigation. Patel did not provide further details, but said in a social media post, "Our agents and law enforcement are already on the scene and will share updates as soon as more information becomes available." CBS News quoted witnesses at the scene as saying that a person attacked a group of people with Molotov cocktails during a solidarity march for Israeli prisoners held in Gaza at Boulder's Pearl Street Mall in Colorado. The Boulder Police Department said it was responding to a report of an attack in the city that included multiple victims. It did not provide any further details. The attack comes weeks after a Chicago-born man was arrested in the fatal shooting of two Israeli embassy employees in Washington, D.C. The incident has polarized the United States regarding the war in Gaza between pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian protesters. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan

Arab-Islamic committee urges ceasefire, aid access as Israeli strikes devastate Gaza

A high-level ministerial committee formed by the Arab-Islamic extraordinary summit on Gaza has called for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, along with unrestricted humanitarian access to the besieged enclave. The appeal comes as Israeli airstrikes continued for a second consecutive day in northern Gaza, deepening what the committee warned is an unfolding humanitarian catastrophe. The committee—chaired by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and including top diplomats from Jordan, Bahrain, Egypt, and Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit—held a virtual meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and senior Palestinian officials. The ministers briefed Abbas on diplomatic efforts to end the war, lift the blockade on Gaza, and prepare for a high-level international peace conference co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and France this June in New York. The conference will seek to revive the two-state solution, based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state. In their statement, the ministers voiced strong support for mediation efforts led by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States. They urged Israel to immediately allow the entry of humanitarian and medical aid, grant full access to United Nations agencies—particularly UNRWA—and end its military escalation in both Gaza and the West Bank. The committee also called for an international recovery and reconstruction conference to be convened in Cairo as soon as a ceasefire is achieved. It condemned Israel's obstruction of the committee's planned visit to Ramallah, describing it as a violation of diplomatic norms and a reflection of what they called the Israeli government's 'extremist' policies that block aid and derail peace efforts. Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes intensified across northern Gaza on Sunday, targeting residential buildings and high-rises in Gaza City and surrounding areas. Gaza's Civil Defense reported that roughly 70 residential structures had been destroyed over a 48-hour period, worsening the crisis in one of the world's most densely populated areas. According to Gaza's Ministry of Health, 37 people were killed and 136 injured in the past 24 hours. The death toll since Israel resumed its military campaign on March 18 has reached 4,149. Since the start of the war on October 7, 2023, more than 54,400 Palestinians have been killed and over 124,000 injured, according to local health authorities. In one of the deadliest recent incidents, an Israeli airstrike targeted a crowd near an aid distribution site in Rafah, killing at least 31 people and seriously injuring dozens more. Gaza health officials reported that all victims had been shot in the head or chest, calling it a deliberate targeting of civilians. In Israel, missile sirens temporarily halted operations at Ben Gurion International Airport on Sunday after a projectile was detected from Yemen. Israeli media reported that the U.S.-supplied THAAD missile defense system likely intercepted the projectile, prompting a brief airspace closure, according to Channel 12. Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of UNRWA, warned that delivering aid in Gaza had become a 'deadly trap,' and urged Israel to lift its blockade and allow secure, unrestricted humanitarian access. The crisis is compounded by Gaza's worsening water shortage. The Gaza City municipality reported that 75% of water wells have been destroyed since October, reducing available daily water supplies to just 35,000 cubic meters—down from 120,000 before the war. Officials warned of looming health and environmental disasters unless emergency relief is delivered soon. Diplomatic momentum for a truce appears to be growing. A senior Hamas official told Reuters the group had responded positively to a new ceasefire proposal but requested several amendments. A Palestinian source familiar with the talks said Hamas is seeking a phased release of hostages over a proposed 60-day truce, broader aid distribution, and international guarantees that any agreement will lead to a permanent ceasefire. Despite these developments, the bombardment of Gaza continues unabated, with destruction mounting and hopes for a durable political resolution still uncertain.
