Left-wing hammer thrower delivers blow to Meloni
A former Olympic hammer thrower has delivered a blow to Giorgia Meloni 's coalition after triumphing in elections that are being seen as a barometer of the Right-wing government's popularity.
Silvia Salis, who competed at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and London 2012 and who sports a tattoo of the Olympic rings on her neck, carried the centre-Left to victory in Genoa, winning the mayorship of one of Italy's largest cities.
Ms Salis, 39, who was backed by the centre-Left Democratic Party, was elected in the gritty port city with 52 per cent of the vote, triumphing over her centre-Right opponent, who took 44 per cent of votes.
After winning 10 Italian hammer throwing titles and competing in the Olympics, finishing 42nd with a throw of 62.28m in Beijing, she forged a career in sports management and was appointed to a senior position on Italy's Olympic Committee.
She is married to Fausto Brizzi, a well-known Italian film director, with whom she has a young daughter.
The vote in Genoa was the most important of 126 elections that were held in villages, towns and cities across the country.
Two million Italians were eligible to vote on Sunday and Monday in what was widely seen as a test of Ms Meloni's coalition, two and a half years after she was elected Italy's first female prime minister.
Italy's Left, which had struggled to gain traction since Ms Meloni came to power, was exultant.
One key reason for its success in Genoa was that the Democratic Party allied with the populist Five Star Movement, putting aside previously fractious relations.
'The case of Genova has shown that the Right only performs well when the progressive camp fails to unite,' Ms Salis told La Stampa newspaper.
She said she wanted to use her five-year mandate to attract major sporting events to Genoa but also to improve basic services such as schools, homes for the elderly and road maintenance.
'Giorgia Meloni has received a slap. The enchanted spell is over,' said Matteo Renzi, a centre-Left former prime minister.
Elly Schlein, the leader of the Democratic Party, celebrated the fact that the Left had also triumphed in elections in Assisi, in Umbria, and Ravenna, on the Adriatic coast.
Two other key cities – Taranto and Matera in the deep south – will go to a run-off vote next month after the initial round was inconclusive.
Ms Schlein said that while the Right was preoccupied with opinion polls, 'we win the elections'. She said the Left had 'clearly come out on top'.
The government insisted, however, that the victory in Genoa was fought on local issues and personalities and claimed it would have little bearing on national politics.
Ms Meloni continues to enjoy relatively high approval ratings.
The latest polls suggest her Right-wing Brothers of Italy party would win 30 per cent of votes if elections were held now.
Her two coalition parties, the League and Forza Italia, would together pull in 16 per cent of the vote, giving the coalition a clear lead over the Left at the national level.
For both sides of politics, the elections in Genoa and elsewhere are being seen as a dry run for regional votes in the autumn, when they will go head-to-head in Puglia, Campania, Tuscany and the Veneto

Andorra vs England predictions: World Cup 2026 qualifying tips and odds
Our expert has three tips for Saturday's World Cup qualifying match between Andorra and England at the RCDE Stadium in Barcelona, Spain (kick-off, 5pm BST). We think England could rack up the goals in Catalonia. Andorra vs England tips England -3 goals on handicap @ 4/5 with Sky Bet Pau Babot to commit 3+ fouls @ 11/10 with Sky Bet BuildABet - England to win to nil, Andorra to commit 18+ fouls and Bukayo Saka to score or assist @ 3/1 with Sky Bet Odds courtesy of Sky Bet. Correct at the time of publication and subject to change. Already a Sky Bet member? Check out more free bets from the best betting sites, reviewed by our experts. England should ease to victory Finding the value in a mismatch such as this can be tough but England to win by four or more goals looks overpriced at 4/5 with SkyBet. Thomas Tuchel's tenure started with 2-0 and 3-0 wins over Albania and Latvia respectively, and Andorra are another level below those sides, sitting 173rd in the Fifa world rankings, and they in turn were outclassed in a 3-0 defeat by Albania in March. England are likely to field a strong side for this one with players likely to be rotated for the friendly with Senegal next week, and attacking players such as Ivan Toney, Eberechi Eze, Morgan Gibbs-White and Morgan Rogers will want to make their mark if given the chance. Inexperienced Babot may rack up fouls Given the uncertainty with team selections, punters should tread carefully in the player markets but 21-year-old Pau Babot has started Andorra's last two games and, if he gets a run out in this one, he could rack up the fouls. Babot's inexperience showed in his last two games for his country as he recorded two fouls against Albania and an almighty seven against Latvia. England averaged 73.8 per cent possession in their first two World Cup qualifiers, so Andorra will have plenty of work to do off the ball and Babot is a decent pick to commit 3+ fouls at 11/10. Saka can shine for new boss Tuchel Those looking for a BuildABet for this contest should start it with England to win to nil. The Three Lions have kept clean sheets in their last four competitive matches, limiting Latvia to just a single shot on target in March's 3-0 win, and Andorra are without their chief goal threat Albert Rosas. Andorra to commit 18+ fouls is another enticing selection. Only Bosnia (19.5) have averaged more fouls than Andorra (17.5) in World Cup qualifying so far and England should have the lion's share of possession. Complete the BuildABet selection with Bukayo Saka to score or assist with the Arsenal man expected to feature for the first time under Tuchel. The winger managed six goals and 10 assists in the Premier League this season. Andorra vs England odds All odds courtesy of Sky Bet. Correct at the time of publication and subject to change.

Inter set to appoint former player Chivu as manager to replace Inzaghi
June 6 (Reuters) - Inter Milan will appoint their former player and youth coach Cristian Chivu as manager to replace the recently departed Simone Inzaghi once details are worked out with his current club Parma, Inter president Giuseppe Marotta said on Friday. Inzaghi left Inter on Tuesday, four years to the day since his appointment and three days after his side suffered a 5-0 defeat to Paris St Germain in the Champions League final to end the season trophyless, and was named coach of Al-Hilal a day later. Italian media reports had already named Chivu as the new manager with the 44-year-old Romanian set to sign a two-year contract, and Marotta, speaking at the Serie A Festival, all but confirmed the news. "To win, money alone is not enough, expertise, planning, experience, and many other qualities are needed," Marotta said. "All these qualities are what we believe to have, for example in the case of Chivu. I'm saying this because I cannot give official confirmation as there is a bureaucratic aspect we need to overcome with Parma." While Inzaghi arrived at Inter after being in charge of Lazio for five full seasons, winning a Coppa Italia and two Italian Super Cups with the Rome-based team, the club are now putting their faith in a coach with very little coaching experience at this level. Chivu spent seven seasons as a defender at Inter, ending his playing career at the club in 2014 and was part of Jose Mourinho's treble-winning side of 2010. He returned to Inter in 2018, taking charge of underage teams and moving up through the ranks to manage the youth team where he won the league title in his first season in charge in 2022. Chivu left Inter at the end of the 2023-24 season, and in February this year he took on his first senior managerial role when he was named Parma manager to replace Fabio Pecchia with the club in the Serie A relegation zone. Parma had lost five of their last six games under Pecchia, while Chivu suffered just three defeats in his 13 matches in charge, securing the club's survival with a win at Atalanta on the final day of the season. Chivu has little time to settle in with the Club World Cup fast approaching where Inter begin the tournament on June 17 when they take on Mexicos' Monterrey in Los Angeles followed by two games in Seattle against Urawa Red Diamonds and River Plate.

Falling LME copper stocks inflate premium for nearby contracts
LONDON, June 6 (Reuters) - Concerns about the nearby supply of copper on the London Metal Exchange (LME) due to falling stocks in LME-registered warehouses has created a premium for nearby contracts against those with longer maturities. The discounts for nearby LME copper contracts against longer dated forwards flipped into premiums a month ago as higher COMEX prices than on the LME continued to attract metal. The premium of the cash LME copper contract over benchmark three-month futures was last at $75 per ton after jumping to $93 on Thursday's close, highest in two and a half years. This compares with a discount of $63 in early April. "The backwardation indicates that there is some kind of a shortage. Because normally it is in contango," said Dan Smith, managing director at Commodity Market Analytics. Total copper stocks in the LME warehouse system have halved since mid-February to 132,400 tons, the lowest in almost a year. Available stocks, those not marked for delivery, at 54,600 tons are the lowest since July, 2023. The sharp move in the spread on Thursday was caused by fresh cancellations in LME stocks, said Alastair Munro, senior base metals strategist EMEA, at broker Marex. The premium eased on Friday as there were no major new cancellations of warrants, title documents that confer ownership, in Friday's data, he said, even though stocks kept on leaving the LME-registered warehouses. Fuelling worries are recent mine supply disruptions and traders diverting copper metal to the U.S. while Washington investigates the potential for import tariffs on copper. Even though there is no dominant holder of the LME copper warrants ahead of the expiry of contracts on the third Wednesday of the month - something which could concern the market, as of June 4 one party held more than 90% of copper cash contracts, helping to keep the premium elevated.
