An impressive set of seven highly trained competitors studying in Wales will form part of Team UK at Europe's largest skills competition this September.
Of the 19 individuals selected from across the UK, a remarkable 37% come from Welsh further and higher education institutions, showcasing the nation's growing strength in vocational excellence.
Selected and trained by WorldSkills UK in partnership with Pearson and Inspiring Skills Excellence in Wales, they now face their final months of preparation before taking on Europe's best across a range of technical and vocational disciplines.
Up to 600 talented young participants from all over Europe will compete for European Championship medals in 38 different skills in Denmark.
Let's meet the Welsh contingent...
Tomas Ankers
At just 17, Tomas from Wrexham is the Welsh team's youngest competitor and is competing within the metalwork and manufacturing industry. He works and studies at Electroimpact and Coleg Cambria.
He said: 'Working as an apprentice alongside doing the competitions has hugely benefitted me. I'm really enjoying learning new techniques and gaining so much experience in a high-pressured but supportive environment.'
Yuliia Batrak
Since moving from Ukraine three years ago, Yuliia, who lives in Colwyn Bay, has made an extraordinary impression, winning two Gold medals at Skills Competition Wales and WorldSkills UK.
The 19-year-old is based at Grwp Llandrillo Menai (Coleg Llandrillo) and will compete in the restaurant services category.
She said: 'Winning a gold medal at the WorldSkills UK was the best moment of my life. The opportunities I've been given include work experience at the Ritz and Gleneagles and I can't wait to represent Wales at the European finals.'
Evan Klimazsewski
Evan, aged 18, from Holyhead, studies at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai and is an apprentice at Lockheed Martin. He won Gold in both Welsh and UK competitions and will compete in electronics.
He said: "Being an apprentice has given me invaluable skills which have been crucial in training for the competition. I'm excited to see how I measure up against competitors from across Europe.'
Melody Cheung
Melody, 19, began her journey with a Bronze medal at Skills Competition Wales last year before being selected for Team UK. Hailing from Abergwynfi, she is studying at Bridgend College and will be competing in graphic design.
She said: 'Being selected was a surprise, but I'm thrilled, and it just goes to show you shouldn't ever give up on yourself. The competitions have helped me handle pressure and improve my technical skills.'
Luke Roberts
From silver in Skills Competition Wales to Highly Commended nationally, Luke's progress has been rapid. The 18-year-old from Haverfordwest studies at Pembrokeshire College and works with Haven Engineering. He will compete in welding.
He said: 'Skills competitions have built my confidence and broadened my experience. College and work have been a huge support, and it's a great thing to have on my CV. I'm really looking forward to making Wales proud.'
Finn Gallagher
Finn's journey started just 18 months ago after responding to an advert for the qualifiers for the UK nationals. Placing joint third, he was selected for EuroSkills. Aged 19, from Salisbury, he attends Cardiff University and will be competing in web technologies.
He said: 'I've been able to network with people from lots of different industries who are equally passionate about their trade. This experience has also helped me land a part-time job and an internship, which is fantastic for my career."
Gabrielle Wilson
Competing over two years, Gabi, 20, was recognised with a Highly Commended award at the UK finals for her hard work and dedication. Hailing from Rhayader, she attends NPTC Group of Colleges and will compete in cooking.
She said: 'I'm proud to represent both my college and Wales. Competing has really helped me with time management and organisation, but my favourite part is learning new skills and seeing the standard of competition up close.'
Competitions in Wales are delivered by Inspiring Skills, a Welsh Government-funded initiative dedicated to promoting vocational excellence. Through Skills Competition Wales and international training support, it helps young people develop world-class skills, gain confidence, and represent Wales on the global stage.
For these Welsh competitors, EuroSkills Denmark is not only a once in a lifetime opportunity but also a vital stepping stone toward the ultimate stage – WorldSkills Shanghai in 2026, often dubbed the 'skills Olympics'.

Jorginho leaves Arsenal, signs for Flamengo before Club World Cup

June 7 (Reuters) - Italy midfielder Jorginho has joined Brazilian side Flamengo ahead of this month's Club World Cup, following a mutual termination of his contract with Arsenal, both clubs said. Jorginho, whose Arsenal deal was set to expire at the end of the month, has joined Flamengo on a contract until July 2028. The 33-year-old Brazil-born Italy international moved to North London from Chelsea in January 2023, making 78 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal. Arsenal finished second to champions Liverpool in the Premier League in the recently-concluded season. "We can confirm that we have reached a mutual agreement with Jorginho to end his contract with immediate effect to become a free agent," Arsenal said in a statement late on Friday. Having started his career at Italian side Hellas Verona before switching to Napoli in 2014, Jorginho won the Champions League, Europa League, Super Cup and Club World Cup titles during his time at Chelsea. Capped 57 times for Italy, he won the European Championship in 2020. "Jorginho's first assignment with Flamengo will be at the Club World Cup," the Brazilian Serie A club said. Flamengo will begin their Club World Cup campaign against Tunisian side ES Tunis on June 16 in Philadelphia. The expanded 32-team Club World Cup runs from June 14 to July 13 in the United States with $1 billion in prize money at stake.

Crystal Palace discover likely date for verdict on European football ban

Crystal Palace secured their spot in next season's Europa League after winning the FA Cup but their participation in the competition is in major doubt with UEFA set to make a decision Crystal Palace face a near MONTH LONG wait to discover their European fate. The Eagles secured their spot in the Europa League at the end of the season after beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final. They were set to go straight into the league stage of the competition but there are now doubts over whether the south Londoners can actually compete in the tournament. UEFA rules forbid individuals having control of more than club to be in the same competition at the same time to avoid conflicts of interest. ‌ Eagle Football - the group owned by John Textor - is a minority shareholder in Palace, while they are also a majority shareholder in French side Lyon. Both clubs have secured qualification for the Europa League. ‌ As it stands, Lyon get priority over the Premier League side due to their superior league finish last term. Palace chiefs have attempted to win UEFA over by flying to their headquarters in Switzerland for talks. But it appears that Palace will have to sweat for a while over their prospects of playing Europe next season. That's according to the BBC, who say a decision from UEFA is not expected until at least the end of the month. The news will be a huge blow to Palace's hopes of planning for next season. Boss Oliver Glasner has already admitted that a place in Europe could affect their transfer ambitions. Speaking earlier this year, he said: 'From a financial perspective, Crystal Palace will never be a top-four club in England. Not with all the other big clubs here and that's not necessary because not everybody can be a top-four club. It's just not possible. 'This club got promoted in 2013. Since then, it has always progressed. Not huge steps. You can be a one-hit wonder and then you're gone. We said: our planning shouldn't be, 'Now we play in Europe, so let's do crazy things', and then everything collapses. We follow a pathway. ‌ 'This pathway didn't start with Oliver Glasner. It started with the new owners in 2010. Very stable, mid-table, always between 10 and 15. And this is where we are again. 'Now, it's step by step. Winning this trophy, playing internationally, getting this experience, and maybe getting some players we couldn't by playing European football. This can help us take the next step.' ‌ Palace have already seen one of their Premier League rivals take action regarding their European hopes. Nottingham Forest also saw a potential spot in the Champions League in jeopardy due to Evangelos Marinakis' ownership of Greek giants Olympiacos. He diluted his control of the East Midlands club by placing his shares in a blind trust. But Textor is unlikely to follow that example because he and Eagle Football do not have decisive influence over the Croydon outfit. JIM SPENCE: Paper thin squads at Tannadice and Dens need attention NOW

Both bosses at Dundee and United can expect to come under quick pressure if they don't get recruitment right in the coming weeks. Many Dundee fans are angry at the appointment of Steven Pressley, and even with last season's success, there's still a section of United supporters lukewarm about Jim Goodwin. It was always thus in football with fickle fans. But with both squads currently paper thin, the pressure could mount sharply if decent signings aren't forthcoming. We'll find out soon enough just how attractive the city clubs are to the kind of players who could boost their prospects next season. How great will the lure of European football at Tannadice prove; and how tempting might the prospect be of working with Steven Pressley as manager and with a technical director like Gordon Strachan, at Dens? Both clubs face major rebuilds; Dundee have just twelve signed players while United have had 16 departures, so a host of new faces will soon be on view. With a wafer thin squad of his own, Jim Goodwin's renovation project will be extensive, with players required in all positions, and a first deal now set to be done for Moldovan defender Iurie Iovu. Repeating another top four finish while restructuring the personnel that achieved it last season will be a major challenge. Arabs and Dees will hope their clubs are on the ball and that player identification to rebuild for the new season is already well advanced. Football is fluid and new targets and potential signings often emerge suddenly, so while a range of targets will undoubtedly have been identified at both clubs, there's also the prospect of new signing opportunities appearing as the squads are revamped. United fans, whatever they think of the departed Glenn Middleton, will recognise that when the Tannadice coffers can't compete with those of Doncaster Rovers, then attracting quality is no easy task, and that applies 100 metres up the street too. That means the powers of persuasion and the personal contacts of those in charge must be worked to the max to lure at least the same calibre of loan players who proved successful last season. Both clubs will have to find unique selling points to attract some targets, because if it comes down to purely a cash contest, neither can compete with many third and in some cases fourth tier English clubs. I've seen some United fans say that Middleton should have stayed for the challenge of Europe, but at 25, while he's hardly Methuselah, a player at that stage maybe has only another two decent contracts in front of him. Weighed against the prospect of possibly a very short European campaign, I wouldn't blame any professional for putting the mortgage first. The youth academies at both clubs will hopefully continue to supplement the recruitment of loan players and other signings. Each team has lost talismen; notably Lyall Cameron at Dens and goal machine Sam Dalby at Tannadice. Replacing that quality will rigorously test recruitment strategies. As for Pressley's appointment, Dundee supporters should rally round and support him. He deserves a fair crack of the whip to see what his team looks like and what he's trying to build before fans rush to judgement.
