New 200-acre Congresbury solar farm 'could power 14,500 homes'

BBC News19-03-2025

A solar farm with the capacity to power more than 14,500 homes could be built on rural land. Clean energy company Belltown Power says it has earmarked the Oldbridge site near Congresbury in North Somerset for the project.Ahead of the plans being formally submitted the company is holding an event for the public to see them on 19 March from 14:30 GMT at the Old School Rooms in Congresbury. Antoine Vandenborre, from Belltown Power, said: "If approved, this solar farm will provide much-needed renewable energy, helping to decarbonise the electricity network and support North Somerset Council in meeting its net zero carbon emissions targets."
A website set up by Belltown to promote the project says the 200-acre site will retain some farming use, for example allowing sheep to graze, once it is up and running. It added the site will have a planned lifespan of 40 years, after which it will return to its original use.A planning application for the new solar farm is expected to be submitted to North Somerset Council by early summer.

Arsenal get Benjamin Sesko green light as star stands ground over £60m transfer

Benjamin Sesko was targeted by Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal for a £60m switch in time for the Club World Cup, but that deadline has now passed and Arsenal could swoop in Arsenal will be able to proceed with a move for RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko after the Slovenia international wasn't tempted to make a money-spinning switch to Saudi Arabia in time to play at the Club World Cup. Saudi outfit Al Hilal had settled on Sesko as their third target in the hunt for a big name forward to join Aleksandar Mitrovic in their squad for the tournament in the US this summer. ‌ But they had to complete a deal by 7pm GMT on Tuesday in order to register new players for the group stages. ‌ Al Hilal face Real Madrid in their Club World Cup opener next Wednesday, and they are hoping to use the tournament to prove that Saudi sides have made giant strides forward in recent years despite criticism of their Pro League. One of the key ways they are seeking to do that is of course cash, but Al Hilal failed in pursuits of Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres before Sesko, who is seeking to leave Leipzig this summer but would rather stay in Europe. Those forward snubs come after Al Hilal, who last week appointed Simone Inzaghi as their new boss, were also turned down by Bruno Fernandes, who opted not to join his Portugal team-mates Joao Cancelo and Ruben Neves in Saudi Arabia and instead stay at Manchester United. Arsenal have been chasing Sesko for a year, and came close to completing a deal for the 22-year-old last summer. He has remained on their radar ever since, along with the in-demand Gyokeres and Newcastle hotshot Alexander Isak. And with interest from a wide range of clubs in Gyokeres and Isak commanding a fee of north of £100million, the Slovenian is seen as the easier player to sign. ‌ Leipzig failed to qualify for European football this season despite 21 goals in 45 games in all competitions for Sesko, and the Bundesliga outfit are now set to part ways with both the centre forward and attacking midfielder Xavi Simons in order to raise cash. Sesko could earn up to four times as much money at Al Hilal than he'd get at Arsenal, and a while a move there cannot be ruled out once the transfer window reopens again next Monday, the fact that he has rebuffed this interest looks to be a good sign for the Gunners. North Somerset Council starts three-weekly black bin collections

Black bin rubbish will now be collected by one West council every three weeks instead of Somerset council said it will help the authority cut costs and also improve their current 55% recycling collections will continue weekly in new red bags, and North Somerset Council is set to become one of the first authorities in the UK to collect plastic bags and soft plastic wrapping."We've spent £4m on black bin collections last year but we could save £1m this year on reduced waste and recycling - that's a huge amount of money," said Annemieke Waite, Cabinet Member for Planning and Environment at North Somerset Council. "Council's are very strapped for cash and the cost of things like adult social services and children's services have gone up so much over the years and this is something that we can do to help our budgets," she added. Last year, North Somerset Council estimated that the average black bin collection contained 18% recyclable materials and 27% recyclable food plastics including food packaging represent a significant amount of non-recyclable Council have been trialling the use of the new red bags for recycling and believe they could reduce the quantity of waste in black bins by as much as 10%.The plan includes selling crisp packets and cling film to companies which turn them into other products. North Somerset Council have said that exceptions could be made for households with circumstances that mean they produce more black bin waste, including families with babies."We're asking people to give it a go first because that's the right thing to do but from the end of this month there will be an application form online that they can fill out," said Ms Waite.
