Norway's Warholm shatters own world best time in 300m hurdles

Straits Times20 hours ago

OSLO, Norway - Norwegian hurdling great Karsten Warholm destroyed his own world best time in the rarely run 300 metres hurdles at the Oslo Diamond League meeting on Thursday, chasing down American Rai Benjamin in a stunning finish.
Roared on by the home crowd, the 2020 Olympic champion came off the corner behind Benjamin but roared past the man who had beaten him for Olympic gold last year in Paris to finish in a blistering 32.67 seconds, breaking his previous mark of 33.05 set in April.
Warholm ripped off his shirt and spun it around his head in delight when his record time flashed on the Bislett Stadium screen.
"I never really went away of course, but it is good to be back for sure," Warholm said. "I usually fade at the end of the 400, so the 300 suits me to some degree but I will be back strong in the 400 on Sunday (in Stockholm).
"The crowd was amazing as ever and the atmosphere was something else and I am just so happy that I could perform at my best in front of the support."
Benjamin was second in 33.22, while Alison dos Santos of Brazil was third in 33.38.
World record holder Armand Duplantis of Sweden cruised to an easy victory in the pole vault, while Nico Young became the fastest American over 5,000 metres outdoors.
Julien Alfred opened her season with a win in the 100m to set the pace as the woman to beat at this year's world championships in Tokyo.
Duplantis, a twice Olympic and world champion, cleared 6.15m and then called it a night rather than chase a world record attempt in chilly 14 C temperatures.
"It did get cooler so that was why I stopped jumping," said Duplantis, who soared 6.27m in February to break the world mark for the 11th time.
"On Sunday in Stockholm it would be an absolute dream to break the world record, in fact I could retire if I do," he said laughing.
"At the moment the forecast is good for Sunday and I am feeling good. I need to build on tonight and get ready now for the big one."
"CRAZY RACE"
Young outsprinted an excellent 5,000 field to win in 12 minutes 45.27 seconds in a race full of national records and personal bests.
While Young's time was a U.S. outdoor record, fellow American Grant Fisher clocked a world and national indoor record of 12:44.09 in February.
"It was a crazy race," Young said. "This surprised me a little bit but I am really proud that I managed to stay on this pace all this time. The best is yet to come."
Ethiopia's Biniam Mehary and Kuma Girma crossed second and third respectively, while Englishman George Mills was fourth in 12.46.59 to obliterate the British record of 12:53.11 held by distance great Mo Farah.
Alfred, the first athlete from Saint Lucia to win an Olympic gold medal when she triumphed last year in Paris, enjoyed victory in the 100m in a time of 10.89 seconds.
"I was a little rusty but I got the win under my belt which is the main thing," Alfred said. "As for my season I am Olympic champion so I am the one to beat but I really want to add world champion to my name as well."
Paris Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya raced to victory in the men's 800m, holding off a fast-closing field over the final 100m to finish in 1:42.78.
"My body felt a little tired as I have come from Kenya so the travel has been long but I am happy with my performance against a strong field," Wanyonyi said. "I am happy with the start to my season in this world championship year."
Kenya's Faith Cherotich won the women's 3,000m steeplechase, outsprinting Olympic champion Winfred Yavi of Bahrain in a neck-and-neck battle over the final 200m, clocking 9:02.60 to edge Yavi by 0.16 seconds.
Haruka Kitaguchi of Japan, women's javelin gold medallist at the Paris Games, threw almost a metre more than the rest of the field to win in Oslo with a toss of 64.63m. REUTERS

Zverev sets up Stuttgart semi-final with impressive Shelton, Fritz also through

FILE PHOTO: Jun 4, 2025; Paris, FR; Alexander Zverev of Germany during his match against Novak Djokovic of Serbia on day 11 at Roland Garros Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Susan Mullane-Imagn Images/File Photo REUTERS Top seed and home favourite Alexander Zverev beat Brandon Nakashima 7-5 6-4 to advance to the semi-finals of the Stuttgart Open on Friday while Americans Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton also reached the last four. Zverev is seeking his first grasscourt title and he was involved in a tight opening set which was tied at 5-5 when the German switched gears in the final two games to clinch it. But Zverev was far more dominant against his American opponent in the second set as he finished the match with 31 winners in a contest that lasted 90 minutes. "I'm in the semi-finals now and now I really want to focus on trying to do the best I can," Zverev said. "I know the opponents are going to get tougher but I'm really happy on the court right now I'm really happy in Stuttgart and I'm looking forward to the next two days." Zverev will play third seed Shelton next after the American, who was virtually unstoppable on his first serve, beat Jiri Lehecka 6-4 6-4, firing 18 aces. Shelton was so dominant in the second set that he did not lose a single point on serve while he won 100% of his first-serve points in the match, with victory ensuring he will break into the top 10 for the first time in his career. Marton Fucsovics had beaten Fritz in straight sets in Stuttgart two years ago but this time the American, who has yet to drop a set at the tournament, came out on top in a dominant 6-3 6-4 victory. Although Fritz was involved in some long baseline rallies, he relied on his serve, sending 12 aces past the Hungarian to set up a semi-final clash with Felix Auger-Aliassime, who beat the 17-year-old German Justin Engel 7-6(3) 6-3. Engel had claimed his first professional victory on grass earlier this week when he beat James Duckworth, following it up with an upset win over seventh seed Alex Michelsen, but beating Auger-Aliassime proved to be a step too far for the teenager. "His serve was so incredibly good today that I felt pressure in my own service games," Engel said. "But it was great fun playing in front of this crowd again. I can't wait to play here again next year." REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Scheffler sets out early with hopes of moving into U.S. Open contention

Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-Imagn Images REUTERS Scheffler sets out early with hopes of moving into U.S. Open contention OAKMONT, Pennsylvania - Pre-tournament favourite Scottie Scheffler headed out early in the U.S. Open second round on Friday hoping to play his way into contention at Oakmont Country Club, where overnight leader J.J. Spaun was scheduled to go out with the late starters. World number one Scheffler, who came into the year's third major with three wins in his last four starts, opened with a three-over-par 73 that was his worst first-round score relative to par of his majors career. That left Scheffler in a share of 49th place, seven shots behind surprise leader Spaun and facing a stern challenge as he has never come back from outside the top 30 at the end of the first round to win an official PGA Tour event. In the opening round, the brilliant Spaun fired a four-under 66 that was the day's only bogey-free round, and the unheralded American will try to build on his hot start when he heads out from the first tee at 12:52 p.m. ET (1652 GMT). South African Thriston Lawrence, who trails by one shot, will go out at 2:20 p.m. from the 10th tee. Five-times major winner Brooks Koepka, one of 14 LIV Golf players in the field, also went out early and started his day two shots off the pace and in a three-way share of third place with South Koreans Kim Si-woo and Im Sung-jae. Spaniard Jon Rahm, part of a group that finished the opening round three shots back of Spaun, also started early from the 10th tee. Holder Bryson DeChambeau and Masters champion Rory McIlroy, who both struggled in the opening round, have afternoon tee times. Messi on a mission: Inter Miami not a favourite but can spring a surprise at Club World Cup

THE expanded Fifa Club World Cup kicks off this weekend in the United States, with a total of 63 matches played among 32 teams in 11 cities. While much of the attention will be on the European heavyweights like Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Manchester City and Real Madrid, there are many other teams that will fancy their chances of upsetting the odds. In the second part of this preview of the US$1 billion tournament, BT Weekend takes a look at four clubs that are looking to provide some thrills. Inter-Miami The American club co-owned by David Beckham and with a certain Lionel Messi on their roster will take part in the tournament's opening fixture on Saturday (Sunday 8 am kickoff, Singapore time) against Egyptian side Al-Ahly at the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida. Inter Miami were lucky to make the final cut at the Club World Cup as they won the Major League Soccer (MLS) Supporters' Shield for the best performance in the regular season, which meant that Los Angeles Galaxy – winners of the MLS play-offs – missed out. Messi, an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner who turns 38 on June 24, is the headline act at Inter Miami. In his first full season in MLS, he was named the most valuable player for 2024. Sign Up Sign Up The Argentina superstar is on a mission to add even more trophies to his haul, and he is one of four former Barcelona players in the team – the others are former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, midfielder Sergio Busquets and defender Jordi Alba. Apart from Al-Ahly, the other two teams in Group A are Palmeiras from Brazil and Portuguese side Porto. The 65,000-seater Hard Rock Stadium in Miami will host eight Club World Cup games, including the opening fixture between Inter Miami and Al-Ahly. PHOTO: REUTERS Al-Hilal Of the four Asian teams in action, it is Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal that will fly the continent's flag high. They have a new manager in the form of Simone Inzaghi, who joined just last week after leaving Inter Milan at the end of a disappointing season with the Serie A side that culminated in a 5-0 thrashing by PSG in the Champions League final. The Riyadh-based club received a significant injection of funds from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, and those deep pockets have helped attract players like Ruben Neves, Joao Cancelo, Kalidou Koulibaly, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. Saudi captain Salem Al-Dawsari is among the established local players in the starting line-up. Still reeling from failing to win a fifth Asian Champions League title in May, Al-Hilal will hope a new manager in charge and fresh perspectives and tactics will bring them more success on the international stage. Al-Hilal are in Group H along with Real Madrid, Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg and Pachuca from Mexico. Flamengo By far the biggest club in Brazil, Flamengo are widely regarded as the best team outside of Europe. They are coached by former Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and Flamengo defender Filipe Luis and they play their home games at the iconic Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Flamengo currently top the Serie A table with 24 points from 11 games. They are also in the knockout stage of this year's Copa Libertadores, South America's premier club cup competition. Flamengo coach Filipe Luis used to play for Chelsea and Atletico Madrid and he is hoping to bring more glory to his team at the Club World Cup. PHOTO: REUTERS Many stars have come through their ranks over the years, among them Vinicius Junior and Lucas Paqueta. The current line-up includes Brazil striker Pedro, who is now back in full force after spending seven months out with a knee injury. One player to keep an eye on is Uruguay playmaker Giorgian De Arrascaeta, who has pulled the strings in midfield for the last six years. Flamengo's previous best finish at the Club World Cup was in 2019 when they were runners-up, losing the final to Liverpool after extra time. This year, they are in Group D with Chelsea (England), ES Tunis (Tunisia) and Leon (Mexico). Urawa Red Diamonds Urawa Red Diamonds are the perfect example of a club that has enjoyed greater success on the continental stage than at home. The team from Saitama has bagged the J League just once – nearly two decades ago in 2006 – but they have won the AFC Champions League thrice, with the most recent triumph in May 2023. Their Polish manager Maciej Skorza, who is now in his second stint with the club, has plenty of experienced players in his squad. Former Japan midfielder Genki Haraguchi has returned to the club after spending a decade in Germany. Captain Takahiro Sekine also enjoyed a fairly successful two-year stint in Europe several years ago. And there is veteran goalkeeper Shusaku Nishikawa, who is far from slowing down even at the age of 38. Urawa Red Diamonds are in Group E with River Plate (Argentina), Inter Milan (Italy) and Monterrey (Mexico).
