Indian equity mutual fund inflows slump to 13-month low in May despite market gains

Indian equity mutual fund inflows fell to a 13-month low in May, marking the fifth consecutive month of decline, with large-, mid-, and small-cap funds all reporting reduced inflows.
Net inflows dropped about 22% month-on-month to 190.13 billion rupees ($2.22 billion), the lowest since April 2024, data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) showed on Tuesday.
The decline was driven by a softer market in May after sharp rallies in earlier months, stretched valuations, macro headwinds including India-Pakistan tensions, and global inflation concerns, said Himanshu Srivastava – associate director - manager research, Morningstar Investment Research India.
Despite this, India's Nifty 50 rose 1.7% in May, logging a third straight month of gains, supported by the return of foreign buying and improved March-quarter earnings.
Foreign portfolio investors (FPI) bought Indian shares worth $2.34 billion in May, the highest monthly inflows since September 2024 when the benchmarks hit record highs.
The broader small- and mid-caps jumped 8.7% and 6.1%, respectively, buoyed by foreign buying and a surge in some defense stocks. Inflows into large-cap funds more than halved to 12.5 billion rupees in May, while mid- and small-cap funds saw inflows decline 15% and 20% to 28.09 billion rupees and 32.14 billionrupees, respectively, AMFI data showed.
India's mutual funds held an unprecedented 2.15 trillion rupees in cash as of April. Analysts said the record high cash holding indicates that funds may be awaiting more favourable valuations.
While overall inflows moderated in May, contributions via systematic investment plans (SIPs) - a mode of investment for mutual fund investors - rose marginally to a record high of 266.88 billion rupees in May. The number of SIP accounts also rose to 85.6 million from 83.8 million in April.

Indian benchmarks log weekly losses as Mideast tensions, trade woes rattle sentiment

India's equity benchmarks declined on Friday and posted weekly losses as Israel's military strikes on Iran escalated tensions in the Middle East and dampened global risk sentiment. The Nifty 50 was down 0.68% at 24,718.6 and the BSE Sensex fell 0.70% to 81,118.6. Eleven of the 13 major sectors logged losses, on the day. The broader small- and mid-caps dropped 0.4% and 0.5% respectively. Oil marketing companies BPCL, HPCL, and Indian Oil slid 1.6%-2% on worries that higher crude prices would erode refining margins. Higher oil prices are a negative for India, which imports a bulk of its crude. Globally equities also fell on Friday, while safe-havens including gold and the Swiss franc gained. Brent crude jumped 7.2% amid fears of supply disruptions. Israel said it struck Iranian nuclear targets to block Tehran from developing atomic weapons, prompting retaliation from Iran, which launched 100 drones. 'The escalating Middle East conflict and potential Suez Canal disruption pose material risks to India's trade flows and could drive up fuel, fertilizer, and chemical costs,' said Dharan Shah, founder of India shares stumble on trade uncertainty, Middle East tensions 'If tensions persist, inflation and market volatility could rise sharply.' Meanwhile, airline stocks Interglobe Aviation and SpiceJet lost 3.9% and 1.6% after an Air India plane crashed in Ahmedabad on Thursday, killing nearly all 242 people on board. They have lost 6.6% and 3.4%, respectively, in two sessions. For the week, the Nifty and Sensex lost 1.1% and 1.3%, reversing gains from earlier in the week. Uncertainty and lack of details around a U.S.-China trade deal also pressured markets, overshadowing optimism from easing domestic inflation and the central bank's bumper policy support. 'Any trade deal between U.S. and its key trading partners is likely to take longer and we are in the initial chapters of a prolonged trade dispute, which may spur inflationary pressures,' said Sandeep Bagla, CEO of Trust Mutual Fund.

India, China agree to expedite resumption of direct flights as ties improve

India and China have agreed to expedite the resumption of direct air services and step up communication, the two countries' foreign ministries said on Friday, as Beijing and New Delhi continue to mend bilateral ties. The ministries' statements came after a meeting on Thursday of Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong, who is visiting India. The two countries reached an agreement in October regarding patrolling along their Himalayan border, thawing a standoff that began in 2020 and had strained bilateral ties, impacting areas from trade to technology to air travel. China expresses concern, offers help to resolve Pakistan, India conflict Sun said in the meeting that the two sides should properly handle disputes and differences, and jointly play a constructive role in maintaining international and regional peace and stability, according to the Chinese ministry's statement. The two sides agreed to continue to stabilise and rebuild ties, the Indian ministry's statement said. India bond yields hit 5-week high as surging oil prices add to bearishness before auction

MUMBAI: Indian government bond yields hit a five-week high on Friday as higher oil prices and caution before the weekly debt auction dampened sentiment. The yield on the benchmark 10-year bond was at 6.3192% as of 10:00 a.m. IST, compared with its previous close of 6.2798%. The most liquid 6.79% 2034 bond yielded 6.3888%, after closing at 6.3439% on Thursday. Yields on these bonds hit a resistance of 6.3316% and 6.4016%, the highest since May 9, earlier in the day. India bond yields dip on value buying, fall in US peers Oil prices jumped more than 13% on Friday after Israel said it struck Iran, targeting its nuclear facilities and ballistic missile factories, to prevent Tehran from building an atomic weapon, which fuelled worries about disruptions in oil supplies. The benchmark Brent crude contract hit $78.50 per barrel, its highest since January 27, and was last up 9% at $75.50 per barrel. India is a major importer of crude oil and higher prices could affect the inflation outlook. Retail inflation eased to 2.82% in May, an over six-year low, from 3.16% in April. 'Oil has suddenly become the most important element to be tracked over the near term and unless we see some meaningful downturn, bonds will continue to remain affected,' a trader at a state-run bank said. Meanwhile, New Delhi will sell bonds worth 300 billion rupees ($3.49 billion) on Friday, including the liquid seven-year paper, with investors remaining cautious after the central bank's change in stance last week. 'Auction demand has now become more crucial and will decide whether the technical upside will be broken,' the trader said. RATES Indian overnight index swap (OIS) rates saw paying pressure across the curve, tracking higher bond yields and oil prices. The one-year OIS rate hit 5.59% after ending at 5.55% on Thursday, while the two-year OIS rate rose 2 basis points to 5.53%. The liquid five-year OIS was the most affected and jumped six bps to 5.79%.
