Exhibition marks ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas'
New Delhi: From photos of demolition drives, 'nasbandi (sterilisaiton)' camps, news reports, prison diaries to protests, the one-day exhibition to mark 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' showcased the Emergency period at the Thyagaraja stadium here on Wednesday.

on Wednesday, the exhibition brought together by the ministry of culture not only put out the story of the Emergency era but India's struggle to fight through and come out of that period. The measures being taken by the current govt to strengthen democracy and Constitution were also part of the exhibition.
A highlight of the exhibition was a curation of 15 paintings put together by artists associated with the Lalit Kala Academy.
The artists, who came from different parts of the country, used art and colours to depict how the attack on fundamental rights played out after June 25, 1975, and at the same time the resilience of people who fought through it to reclaim their voice.

A few steps away from a display showing the gazette notification of the proclamation of Emergency, one came across a painting showing a pen piercing through the heart of the Constitution caught in chains, with black blood dripping.

Further on one came across a painting titled 'The Silenced Uprising' where a woman's lips are sewed with a red thread and the background is dark while she adorns the colour red and her eyes are bright reflecting the unrest brewing in the hearts of those who felt the impact of the Emergency and its fallout.
Paintings similarly themed were displayed on the wall amid photos of protests held by political leaders. These also depicted the curbs on press freedom with one showing a microphone caged as a metaphor for how the Emergency period silenced not just the media but all those who tried to question those in power and their actions.
The special exhibition on Indian Democracy was divided into three curated sections. Bharat-Mother of Democracy: Showcasing India's ancient and participative democratic traditions; Dark Days of Democracy: Chronicling the events and consequences of the 1975 Emergency; and Strengthening Democracy in India: Featuring recent democratic reforms.

NEW DELHI: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge Wednesday said the country is under "undeclared emergency" for the last 11 years, and PM Narendra Modi is orchestrating a "drama" about democracy and the Constitution, as well as raking up Emergency 50 years later to divert attention from his "governance failures and capture of institutions". Kharge mocked that BJP's ideological patron RSS did not support the Constitution framed by B R Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru and other Congress members, and burnt its copy at the Ramlila Maidan because it "lacked the elements of tradition and culture like Manusmriti". He added that effigies of Ambedkar too were burnt in protest. "People who had no role in the freedom struggle and the making of the Constitution have now got the wisdom after Congress has been running a yatra to save the Constitution. BJP has been rattled by Congress's 'Jai Bapu, Jai Bheem, Jai Samvidhan' campaign, and the passion generated by Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra, and that is why it is raking up Emergency 50 years after it has been forgotten byeverybody," Kharge said. Congress general secretary K C Venugopal said party units have completed 'Jai Samvidhan' rallies in states and districts, and will take the nationwide campaign to constituency level over the coming two months. The EC too has become a "puppet" of Modi, which is behind BJP's electoral successes, Kharge alleged. "You (Modi) have brought an undeclared emergency. The old Emergency is long gone. Even Indira Gandhi had supported the amendment to the Constitution (to remove the emergency provision) when moved by Morarji Desai," he said, adding that apologies were also issued for it. "If today the Constitution is in danger, it is because of you (PM) and nobody else," Kharge said. Kharge said the PM is witnessing the shredding of the Constitution in Manipur but is scared of visiting the state, and did not visit J&K after the Pahalgam terror attack.

'Black day' observance rattling Congress: BJP
BJP on Wednesday lashed out at Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge over his remarks against PM Modi, saying the opposition party is rattled by the observance of 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' as it has brought back memories of atrocities committed by the Indira Gandhi govt during Emergency. Saying history should never be forgotten and lessons should be learnt from it, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said the party was making efforts to make people aware of Emergency by presenting its imposition by then Congress govt as a "black day". "The erstwhile Congress govt had imposed Emergency without any cabinet decision. Lakhs of people were put in jail overnight. Power supply to media houses was cut so that newspapers do not publish the truth. Many people embraced death because of the kind of torture they were subjected to," Patra said. Patra accused Kharge of mocking the country's democracy by making remarks against the PM. "How will Congress understand the glory of democracy when there is no democracy in it," he asked.
