Yorkshire Vet star, 73, unveils her 'first-ever tattoo' in spin-off
Farmers Steve and Jean Green have returned with their spin-off show alongside Yorkshire Vet Peter Wright, and feisty Jean caused a surprise during filming when she revealed her first inking
Yorkshire Vet farmer Jean Green, 73, shocked her husband Steve, 96 when she revealed she had visited a local tattoo parlour during filming of the spin off series At Home With The Greens earlier this year.
Jean enlisted pal Peter Wright 's help in getting her first inking of a Yorkshire Rose on her arm. 'Stephen had said to his daughter [Sarah, now 40] that if she ever came home with a tattoo, she would be kicked out,' says Peter.
'I don't think he would have carried that out, he is such a gentle man. But when Jean came home with the tattoo on her arm, his face was a picture, and you could see in his mind that the old cogs were whirling away in there and he wasn't quite sure how to take it.'
Known as Britain's oldest farming couple, Steve and Jean have been married for more than 40 years and have been friends with Peter for just as long.
'I got to know them well when I was young,' Peter says. 'They became one of my regular clients when I started work in Thirsk in 1982. I had this banter with Mrs Green right from the word go, and we've always had a close relationship. I've always loved going to their farm because of the banter we have.'
Jean, with her brightly coloured sweatshirts and silver bracelets jangling from her wrists, is something of a tour de force on the series, while her husband appears to be much quieter, although Peter says that still waters run deep when it comes to the veteran farmer.
'Stephen is more of a thinker, but once you get him going he's quite a conversationalist. When they were in the first flush of love, he would sit on his tractor out in a field, and he showed me some of the poems he would write to Jean there.
When they renewed their wedding vows after 40 years, he produced one of the poems out of his pocket, which I thought was rather nice.'
Yorkshire vet Peter describes the couple as like 'two lovestruck teenagers' and reveals that Steve and Jean had not spent a night apart until Jean was admitted to hospital for surgery during filming.
'They'd never been apart for a single night up until that point and that just typifies their relationship. There's no cross words whatsoever, but there's lots of fun and joy along the way. It sounds corny, but it's true.'
The Greens, who run Stoneybrough Farm in Thirsk, have a huge following amongst Yorkshire Vet fans, and Peter notes that Jean embraces their popularity, often calling to ask what the weekly viewing figures for the show are and enjoying the letters and packages sent by viewers around the world.
'We get oven gloves, coffee, biscuits, calendars, little kangaroo pouches, random stuff,' he says. 'Jean loves it, she can't wait to open a parcel – not knowing what is inside is a huge attraction for her.'

Yorkshire, farmers and now ghost-hunting: Could this show be any more Channel 5?
The Yorkshire Vet: at Home with the Greens could only be more Channel 5 if Jane McDonald turned up at the end to belt out a tune. The broadcaster loves Yorkshire in general, Yorkshire farming shows in particular, and always refuses to take itself too seriously. So how about a Yorkshire farming show in which a bunch of paranormal investigators try to contact a ghost in the cow shed? The stars of this programme – a spin-off from The Yorkshire Vet, which is now in its 21st series – are Jean and Steve Green. Steve is 96 and Jean is 73. He is quite possibly the oldest working farmer in the country; she, rather incongruously, wears a bright pink hoodie with googly eyes on it. They're great characters, and I bet the producers couldn't believe their luck when they stumbled across them. The Greens were clients of Alf Wight, better known as James Herriot, and still tend animals on their farm just outside Thirsk, including calves named Toffee and Apple. Where Jean used to stand at the gate and look onto pure countryside, her fields are now bordered by row upon row of newbuild houses. 'All they do nowadays is build, build, build. There'll be no green acres left,' she laments. In many ways, she and Steve live the same life they did 50 years ago, with few modern comforts. Not in all ways, though. Jean has a mobile phone on which she thinks she has captured pictures of ghostly goings-on. Jean and Steve also believe spirits are visiting the farm and leaving behind a smell of fish and chips. They report this in an utterly matter-of-fact way, which makes it all the more enjoyable. Cue a visit from West Yorkshire Paranormal, ghostbusters whose equipment looks as if it was bought from a toy shop but who keep straight faces throughout. The voice-over informs us that Jean called them in, and only a cynic would suggest this was really the brainchild of a production team keen to fill the episode with something daft. The greatest weakness of the series is how contrived it can feel. A fly-on-the-wall documentary showing the reality of their lives would have been just grand. The vet, Peter Wright (trained by Herriot himself), is clearly very fond of the couple, seeing them often and giving them fish and chip shop vouchers for their wedding anniversary. We see a lot of him and of another vet, Matt Smith, whose jobs this week include castrating a sugar glider. I'm pretty sure you won't have seen that particular operation on TV before. 'The angriest little animal known to man,' said Smith, although it's unclear whether that goes for sugar gliders en masse or just this one. One of the joys of the internet is that you can look up programmes from decades ago when they pop back into your head. At Home with the Greens brought to mind Hannah Hauxwell and I sought out Too Long a Winter, the Yorkshire TV documentary which first brought her to national attention. It's all there on YouTube, beautifully-shot and gimmick-free.

Talking on The TV Podcast, Peter said: 'You've got Coronation Street being made in Manchester, Emmerdale in Leeds. 'Big savings' 'Could you imagine, rather like the daytime consolidation, that ITV will decide to have them both made in the same place under one umbrella? Big savings. 'You still keep Emmerdale set in Yorkshire, but it could be made in Manchester and Salford, which is a bigger hub for ITV. I don't think that's inconceivable — it might be being planned as we speak.' Merging the two shows in any way once seemed unthinkable, but recently ITV announced that it would air an episode next year where the soaps would have a joint storyline. The news came around the same time ITV announced a merger of production between Good Morning Britain, Lorraine, This Morning and Loose Women, with the expected loss of more than 200 jobs behind the scenes. Currently, Emmerdale is made just north of Leeds while Coronation Street is largely filmed at MediaCity in Salford, having previously been at the Granada Studios in Manchester for decades. Peter continued: 'The new hub for Coronation Street in Salford, it cost many, many millions of pounds and it was better facilities for all the people who worked on it in the old place in the middle of Manchester.' A spokesperson for ITV hit back at Peter's suggestion of a soap filming merge: 'ITV has no plans to merge the productions of Coronation Street and Emmerdale. 'Both are uniquely set in Manchester and Leeds, and that production model will continue for the long term. It's pure speculation to say otherwise.'
