Skylar Vann, Payton Verhulst help No. 16 Oklahoma women hold off Auburn 73-71

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Skylar Vann matched her season high with 20 points and Payton Verhulst hit two free throws with four seconds left and scored 15 to help No. 16 Oklahoma hold off Auburn 73-71 on Monday night.
Vann had five points and four assists in the first quarter to help the Sooners (18-6, 6-5 Southeastern Conference) jump in front 12-2 before settling for a 21-17 lead. Oklahoma took a 44-35 lead into halftime and led 58-48 after three quarters.
DeYona Gaston had a three-point play and scored the first nine points of the final quarter to get the Tigers (12-12 3-8) within 58-57 with 8:28 remaining. Vann answered with a three-point play for the Sooners, but Gaston hit a jumper and Mar'shaun Bostic followed with a layup to give the Tigers their first lead at 66-65 with 3:30 left.
Verhulst made 1 of 2 at the line to put Oklahoma ahead by a point and Gaston made the second of two free throws to tie it at 71 with 24 seconds remaining. Verhulst was fouled with four seconds to go and made two for the victory after Gaston missed the game's final shot.
Gaston finished with 24 points and Bostic added 16 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Auburn had never played a game in the state of Oklahoma and was looking for its first road win over a ranked SEC team since beating Georgia in 2011. The two schools met just once prior when Auburn beat the visiting Sooners 95-79 in 2018 in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.
Auburn plays at No. 15 Tennessee on Thursday. Oklahoma plays at Missouri on Sunday.

Two SEC Programs on ‘Commitment Watch' For Highly Touted Quarterback After Official Visits

Two SEC Programs on 'Commitment Watch' For Highly Touted Quarterback After Official Visits originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Celina, Texas, four-star quarterback Bowe Bentley has emerged as one of the nation's top prospects for the class of 2026, with LSU and Oklahoma battling it out for his commitment. Advertisement He's a 6-foot-2, 200-pound dual-threat quarterback and led Celina High School to a 16-0 record and a state championship in 2024, throwing for 3,211 yards, 47 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions. He added 923 rushing yards along with 16 touchdowns on the ground. Bentley can spread the ball across the field with his strong arm and great accuracy. He brings mobility as well, giving him a dynamic advantage while under pressure. Bentley's rapid rise has seen him climb the rankings as he mulls a huge decision. According to 247Sports, he's the No. 78 ranked overall recruit and the seventh quarterback in the class. Advertisement It seems as if Bentley is getting closer to a decision. After his recent trips to Baton Rouge (May 31, 2025) and Norman (June 6-8, 2025), Bentley is officially on commitment watch. LSU appeals to the young quarterback because of its recent history of developing the position with recent Heisman winners Jayden Daniels and Joe Burrow. The Tigers consistently bring elite skill position players to the program, which also makes them very enticing. On the other side, Oklahoma's offensive coordinator Ben Abruckle's fast-paced scheme saw Cam Ward have success just two years ago at Washington State. The Sooners' close proximity to his home state of Texas could also be a driving factor for his choice. As a decision gets closer, both programs are hopeful to land one of the best quarterbacks in next year's class. ESPN Reveals the Top College Football Play of the Last 25 Years

ESPN Reveals the Top College Football Play of the Last 25 Years originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There are some college football plays that stick around in fans' minds long after the final whistle blows. Advertisement ESPN ranked the top-25 plays since 2000 ahead of the 2025 season, listing some of the most memorable moments of the 21st century. Not surprisingly, the top of the list includes unlikely plays that led to championships. Ranked fourth is Alabama's improbable game-winning touchdown pass from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to DeVonta Smith in overtime of the 2018 national championship game against Georgia. Texas quarterback Vince Young's game-winning touchdown run against USC in the 2005 Rose Bowl ranks third. Boise State's "trickeration" in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma comes in at No. 2, with ESPN including both the fourth quarter "Hook and Ladder" play and the overtime "Statue of Liberty" call that helped propel the Broncos to victory. Advertisement Each of those plays were surprisingly successful in their own way, but one play since 2000 arguably sits above the rest: Auburn's "Kick Six" in the 2013 Iron Bowl against in-state rival Alabama. Alabama wide receiver Caleb Sims (29) grabs for Auburn cornerback Chris Davis (11) during the "Kick Six" play in 2013Amanda Sowards/Advertiser Some fourth-quarter chaos took place inside Auburn's Jordan-Hare Stadium to cap off the 2013 regular season. Coming off back-to-back national championships, head coach Nick Saban's Crimson Tide found themselves tied at 28 with 15 seconds remaining against the Tigers and head coach Gus Malzahn. Running back TJ Yeldon's 24-yard rush seemingly ran out the clock, but Alabama ultimately had a long field goal attempt after a review showed that Yeldon was pushed out of bounds with one second remaining. Advertisement Field goal kicker Cade Foster, who had missed three attempts that game, was replaced by Adam Griffith for the 57-yard try. And Griffith came up considerably short, giving Auburn defensive back Chris Davis a chance at a return. The rest is college football lore. "It's a play that will live in the hearts of Auburn fans, who can still hear the school's radio play-by-play announcer, the late Rod Bramblett, screaming 'Auburn's going to win the football game!' as Davis crossed the goal line," Chris Low wrote. Auburn fans went on to rush the field at Jordan-Hare Stadium after the No. 4 Tigers' unbelievable, last-second upset over then No. 1 Alabama. Advertisement The 2013 Iron Bowl remains as the last top-four matchup between the hated rivals and just so happens to feature one of the greatest plays in college football history. Auburn will host this year's Iron Bowl on Nov. 29 in an attempt to log its first win in the series since 2019. NBA Finals are shifting to Indianapolis, with the Pacers and Thunder tied 1-1 going into Game 3

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Oklahoma City Thunder showed their bounce-back capability in Game 2. The Indiana Pacers know they better do the same in Game 3. The NBA Finals resume Wednesday night with the series tied at a game apiece, the matchup shifting to Indianapolis for Game 3 and what will be the first finals game in that city in 25 years. And the Pacers know it's on them to respond after Game 2 wasn't much of a contest. It's obviously possible: The Pacers haven't lost back-to-back games in three months, going 9-0 after losses in that span. This would be a good time for them to extend that run. 'Biggest game of the year,' Pacers forward Pascal Siakam said. That's technically accurate when said before any finals game, but it does ring especially true in this case. Indiana did what it had to do in Oklahoma City; it got a win and stole home-court advantage. Win three games at home over the next week or so, and the Pacers will be NBA champions. Lose any game at home, and the Thunder get the edge right back. But the Pacers have shown a penchant for resiliency. It's much like how Oklahoma City is 17-2 after losses this season (or 18-2, if counting the NBA Cup final); the latest bounce-back effort for the Thunder came in Game 2 after Indiana won Game 1 of the finals. 'I think that we try not to dwell on things,' Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton said. 'As NBA players, just as basketball players in general, it's easy to make a mistake and dwell on it, give up a bucket or whatever. I feel like we do a great job of getting to the next play.' When the finals are tied 1-1, the Game 3 winner eventually wins the title 80.5% of the time. It's a big, big game and everybody knows the stakes. 'I think we just have to keep finding ways to get better as a group,' Thunder guard and NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander said. 'If we continue to do that, we'll be just fine. If we've struggled in an area, that's an area we can get better at. We have to attack that opportunity. I think Game 3 is a perfect example of that.' Haliburton's status Haliburton was limping after Game 2 and acknowledged there's an issue with his lower leg. He didn't offer much in the way of details, and it doesn't matter. He's playing. 'He practiced. He went through everything,' Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. 'I know he has some discomfort. He feels it. But each day it's getting better. I don't think you're going to hear him making a big deal out of it. This is the time of year where it just doesn't get any better than this.' Pacers at home The Thunder have a big home-court edge thanks to their crowd at Paycom Center. The Pacers are hoping for just as much energy — if not more — from their crowd at Gainbridge Fieldhouse for Games 3 and 4. And the Thunder know what's coming. 'That's one thing we have to be ready for coming in here, is understand they're going to be playing with a lot of energy,' Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said. 'They play very well here. They play very comfortable here. We've got to level up to that if we want to give ourselves a chance to compete.' Long time coming Indiana's Myles Turner has played in 346 games at home with the Pacers, including playoffs — by far more than anyone else on the team. No. 347 will be his first there in the NBA Finals. 'I think the city's been waiting for an opportunity like this. I expect a hell of an environment (Wednesday),' Turner said. 'I know it's going to be. It's exciting times for everybody, just to experience the finals in Indianapolis.' Thunder in the first half The Thunder won the first and second quarters in Games 1 and 2, taking a 12-point halftime lead in Game 1 and an 18-point halftime lead in Game 2. Indiana knows that can't keep happening. Oklahoma City is 63-9 with halftime leads this season. 'Obviously it's going to be a different challenge coming on the road,' Thunder guard Alex Caruso said. 'This place will be rowdy. They'll be excited to cheer on their team. For us, I think just sticking with the details of the stuff that we've talked about as a team that are important to win the game.' Winning on the road Road teams are still winning at about a 44% clip in these playoffs, which is on pace to be the best record in 30 years. Entering Wednesday, road teams are 35-44 in this postseason. Teams won road games at a 45% clip in 1995. That doesn't count the 2020 COVID-19 'bubble' playoffs, where everybody was in one spot at Lake Buena Vista, Florida and the 'road' winning percentage was .518 — 43-40. Oklahoma City is 4-3 on the road in these playoffs. Indiana is 7-3. The best league-wide road record for a playoff season was in 1966 — 14-13, a .519 winning percentage. ___ AP NBA:
