Enforcement agencies alarmed by rising drugs seizure from students in Kerala
KOCHI: With Ernakulam district continuing to top the charts in the number of narcotic cases reported annually, a growing concern is the rising abuse of drugs and addictive substances among school students. In the 2024–25 academic year, Ernakulam reported the highest number of incidents of students getting caught with drugs and other banned substances on school premises.
According to data from the Education Department, eight such cases were reported in Ernakulam in 2024–25, involving substances such as drugs, liquor, cigarettes and chewing tobacco. In comparison, the district reported only four such cases in 2023–24. Across the state, a total of 16 drug-related cases involving students were recorded last academic year. After Ernakulam, Kottayam reported four cases, Alappuzha two, and Idukki and Thrissur one each.
The Excise Department is working closely with schools to prevent drug use and trafficking within educational institutions. 'Schools have been instructed to report any such incidents immediately. If drugs or tobacco products are found in a student's possession, we launch a detailed investigation to trace the source,' an Excise officer said. 'It is illegal to sell tobacco products to minors. We consult with parents and teachers before offering counselling to students under the Vimukthi programme. A large number of students in the district receive de-addiction counselling through this initiative.'

Prohibitory orders for AP's Mega DSC 2025 examination centres
In view of the Mega DSC 2025 examinations of Andhra Pradesh, the Cyberabad police issued prohibitory orders around examination centres falling under its jurisdiction. The order, issued by the Cyberabad Police Commissioner Avinash Mohanty, prohibit the assembly of five or more persons within a 200-metre radius of all designated exam centres. The order will remain in force from June 6 to June 30, during the examination hours. In addition, all photocopy and internet centres within a 100-metre radius of the exam centres will also remain closed throughout the examination period. The directive is aimed at preventing potential disturbances, unauthorised activities, or any attempt to disrupt the smooth conduct of the recruitment tests. However, certain personnel are exempt from the order, including police officers, military personnel, home guards on duty, flying squads from the Education Department, and funeral processions. The official cautioned that any violation of the prohibitory orders will attract legal action under the relevant provisions of law.

Drugs worth over ₹10 cr incinerated in Sangareddy
Drugs worth ₹10.11 crore seized in connection with 27 different cases in Sangareddy district were incinerated by the Excise Department on Tuesday (June 3). Among the contraband destroyed were 209.162 kilograms of ganja, 7 grams of diazepam, 0.496 kilograms of alprazolam, 0.468 kilograms of poppy straw, and 90.23 kilograms of methylmethcathinone (3-MMC), a synthetic drug. The drugs, seized by four different police stations including Patancheru, Sangareddy, Narayankhed, and Andole, were destroyed at the Medicare Environmental Management facility in Isnapur.
