Jordan-Iraq electrical interconnection expected to complete by end of July

AMMAN — The second phase of the Jordan-Iraq electrical interconnection project is expected to be completed by the end of July, Director General of the National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) Sufian Batayneh announced on Wednesday.
In a press statement, Batayneh said that 95 per cent of the civil works for the project have been completed and work is underway to install electrical equipment and conduct the necessary tests, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
Jordan began supplying electricity to Iraq through the national grid in March 2024 as part of the first phase of the project.
According to Batayneh, the first phase provided 40 megawatts of electricity to the Rutba area, while the second phase will extend the connection to Iraq's Qaem.
In February 2024, Jordan and Iraq signed the first amendment to their power purchase agreement, ensuring the supply of 132 kilovolts of electricity to meet Rutba's energy needs of about 40 megawatts.
Upon completion of the second phase, Iraq will receive a total of 150 megawatts. With further development of the interconnection, the supply capacity could reach up to 500 megawatts in the medium term.
The foundation stone for the Jordan-Iraq power link was laid on October 6 2022 under the patronage of former prime minister Bisher Khasawneh and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Sudani.

In 2024, the sector achieved a record-high export growth of over 24% compared to 2023 — the highest since 2010 — reaching $2.4 billion, which accounts for 21% of total industrial exports. Eng. Ihab Qadri, representative of the leather and garment industries sector at the Jordan Chamber of Industry, told the Jordan News Agency (Petra): 'This growth clearly reflects the sector's development and its regained momentum in foreign markets, despite the regional and global economic challenges over the past two years.' He attributed this growth mainly to the gradual recovery in demand from the U.S. market, which accounts for 80% of the sector's exports, along with export expansion into European markets, particularly the Netherlands and Belgium. Qadri emphasized that the sector is entering a promising phase, and stakeholders must build on recent achievements by boosting product competitiveness and diversifying exports into non-traditional markets. He also noted that the sector still has untapped export potential worth over $752 million, according to World Trade Center estimates — a key factor in achieving the ambitious goals set in the Economic Modernization Vision. Qadri highlighted that the sector holds the largest share of employment opportunities, with over 96,000 workers, an 8% growth, of whom 31% are Jordanians. The Vision also sees the sector playing a vital role in job creation, with a target to generate 149,000 job opportunities out of the one million total aimed for in the coming years. Qadri also pointed to progress on the establishment of a fully integrated industrial cluster for the leather and garment sector, supported by the International Finance Corporation (IFC). The project has reached an advanced stage, with feasibility studies completed and work underway to finalize incentive packages and determine the geographic location. Promotional campaigns are also being prepared to attract investment and Jordanian labor. The establishment of this integrated industrial cluster is one of the key initiatives supporting the Economic Modernization Vision, especially in light of challenges such as the scarcity of raw materials, which represent nearly 60% of total production costs. Qadri explained that the cluster aims to fill supply chain gaps and reduce delivery times, enhancing the sector's ability to expand globally and increase exports. He emphasized that sustained progress in the sector depends on its ability to adopt technological advancements, implement sustainable practices, and enhance integration with supporting sectors like transport and logistics — all of which would help position Jordan as a competitive industrial and export hub in the region. Qadri concluded by stressing the importance of effectively implementing the initiatives outlined in the Economic Modernization Vision, particularly through the upcoming sector-specific strategy under the national industrial policy. Australian engineer freed from Iraqi prison after four years
After spending more than four years in an Iraqi prison, Australian engineer Robert Pether has been granted a conditional release — a development welcomed by his family and supporters. Pether, 50, was arrested in 2021 alongside a colleague over a contract dispute involving their employer, CME Consulting, and the Central Bank of Iraq. The pair were later convicted of fraud and sentenced to five years in prison and a USD 12 million fine. However, the UN has described Pether's detention as arbitrary and in violation of international law, while a 2022 ruling by the International Chamber of Commerce found the Iraqi central bank to be at fault in the business dispute. Pether's wife, Desree, who lives in Ireland with the couple's family, described the news as a moment of mixed emotions. 'It's the first time in over four years that we've taken one step in the right direction,' she told the BBC. 'There's a tiny glimmer of hope, but there's another mountain still to go over. He needs to be home and in hospital.' According to Desree, her husband is in poor health after years of incarceration. He is unable to keep food down and has reportedly not eaten properly in months. She also raised concerns that he may be suffering a relapse of skin cancer. 'He's unrecognisable. If he got on a plane now and they were checking his passport, they would not know it was the same person,' she said. Electricity Purchased and Sold Increased by 5.8% Last Year - Jordan News
Electricity purchased and sold both increased by 5.8% during the past year compared to 2023, according to the recently released annual report of the National Electric Power Company. اضافة اعلان According to the report, the amount of electricity purchased reached 22,723 gigawatt-hours last year compared to 21,473 in 2023. This includes a 0.2% increase from traditional generation projects, a 22.8% rise from shale oil/Atarat projects, and a 7.5% increase from renewable energy projects. Meanwhile, other sources such as King Talal Dam and the Jordanian-Indian Chemical Company saw a decrease of 3.5%. Electricity sold amounted to 22,323 gigawatt-hours in 2024 compared to 21,105 in 2023. The report noted a 5.5% increase for distribution companies, 7.2% for industrial consumers (transformative, extractive, and electrical energy sectors), and 2.8% for other consumers including the airport, radio, television, and others. The report also stated that imported electricity from Egypt slightly decreased from 266.4 megawatt-hours to 264.0 megawatt-hours, a 0.9% drop. On the other hand, electricity exports rose by 32.6%, from 200.4 to 265.8 megawatt-hours, involving Jerusalem Electricity Company (Jericho), the Iraqi border crossing at Trebil, and the General Electricity Transmission Company of Iraq.
