
Europe's moonshot: Argonaut and the Irish engineer leading the way
In the seaside town of Noordwijk in
the Netherlands
, engineers at the
European Space Agency's
(ESA) European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) are hard at work addressing challenges never encountered before.
Among them is Cork-born Dr Neil Murray, now lead engineer on the ESA's ambitious lunar lander project, Argonaut. Quietly and methodically, Europe is preparing to land on the moon, not as a partner, but on its own terms.
For decades, the ESA has collaborated closely with
Nasa
, Canadian Space Agency (CSA), Japanese Space Agency (JAXA) and others, contributing the Columbus module to the
International Space Station
, robotic arms and science instruments for missions across the Solar System.
But with Argonaut, the ESA is stepping out independently with a bold goal: to deliver infrastructure, science and eventually supplies for astronauts to the surface of the moon. 'It's the first time Europe is going to safely land on the lunar surface,' Murray says. 'We have so many problems which is frustrating and beautiful at the same time.'

Argonaut is the ESA's new lunar cargo lander, a robotic spacecraft designed to deliver up to 1,500kg of cargo to the moon's surface. It will support missions to the lunar South Pole, a region of intense scientific and strategic interest, particularly for future human habitation. Capable of surviving the punishing lunar night – 14 days of darkness with temperatures plunging to minus 150 degrees – Argonaut is engineered to last up to five years on the moon.
The spacecraft is composed of three main components: the Lunar Descent Element (LDE), which guides the lander safely to the surface; the cargo platform, acting as a foundation; and the mission payload, which includes rovers, life-support resources, scientific equipment and communications infrastructure.
Standing six metres high and 4.5m in diameter, Argonaut is, as Murray says, 'a big spacecraft'. It is also Europe's first attempt at delivering something of this scale to another world.
'We're bringing 1,500 kilograms of passenger to the lunar surface. We like to refer to the payload element of Argonaut as the 'passenger', because it has so many elements to it.'
The first full mission in the programme, known as ArgoNET, is planned to launch in late 2031. It will deploy 'NET' infrastructure – navigation, energy, and telecommunications – to help make the moon a more accessible, navigable place.
Acting as a kind of lunar beacon, ArgoNET will improve lunar navigation serving as a reference point for essential selenodetic measurements to accurately measure the moon's surface and varying gravitational fields.
The Argonaut mission is not just a technical challenge, it's also a statement of independence. 'It's important that we are autonomous,' Murray says. 'If we can't do things on our own, then we're always reliant on others. But it's also important that we can bring something unique to the table when we do co-operate.'
The emphasis on European capability is everywhere in the project. The launcher for the mission is Ariane 6, built by the ESA in collaboration with European providers, Arianespace. The LDE is built primarily by Thales Alenia, also European.
And the mission design, funding, and leadership are all European. 'Argonaut is important, and all these other things that the ESA provide, especially Earth observation means that we are contributing to the global space community. That's unique to us, and that allows us to add value.'
The ESA is also leading the way in sustainable space, Murray explains. 'As part of our engineering process, we design beyond the short-term and instead include a sustainable end of life for our missions. That's good for everybody and good for the future.'
'Argonaut is part of ESA's vision for sustainable lunar exploration,' he adds, 'not just getting there, but staying there'.

A replica of Argonaut stands proudly in LUNA, the ESA's state-of-the-art new lunar analogue facility at its European Astronaut Centre (EAC) in Cologne, Germany. The Spaceship EAC science research teams there are studying the moon's soil, searching for water ice, and preparing for future missions using lunar resources.
Much like for Dr Aidan Cowley, materials scientist and ESA research officer at LUNA, it will be a proud moment on the day of touchdown. 'That will be amazing,' Murray adds. 'There will definitely be a piece of Ireland on the moon when Argonaut succeeds. We are well represented in this mission.'
Murray's own journey to the moon is rooted in curiosity rather than certainty. 'When I was 16 or 17, I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do,' he recalls. 'Not a clue. And I don't know how kids do it now either. You can always change.'
He chose mechanical engineering at Munster Technological University (then Cork Institute of Technology), drawn by an interest in maths, physics and fixing things. 'Someone said, with mechanical engineering, you can do a bit of everything and then specialise later.'
That open-minded approach served him well. A year of work experience confirmed he wasn't drawn to industry straight away, and instead he set his sights on further study. He was accepted by both Oxford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and chose MIT.
'People said I'd struggle like hell,' Murray says with a laugh. 'But actually, I didn't. The education I got in Cork was more than enough.'
After MIT came a PhD at Imperial College London, where he found himself working in a supersonic wind tunnel, 'a Mach nine tunnel right in the centre of London', Murray beams.
From there, a career at the ESA unfolded, eventually leading him to the Argonaut programme in 2023. Ask Murray about the highlight of working on Argonaut, and he can't pick one.
'Every day is different. Every day is a highlight. I love the team, and I love the problems. When something is really like: 'This is never going to work', and then it works. That's the best feeling.'
Landing on the moon is notoriously difficult with failures more often than successful outcomes. Why? It's a challenge to remotely control a precision landing on the moon using complex guidance systems and varying lunar gravitational fields.
'Space technology is all cutting-edge and done on a tight budget,' Murray adds. 'People think the budgets are huge, but they're not. Compared to the real world, it's small. So we have to do very difficult things, in a very short time, with very little money.'
That challenge is part of the appeal. 'If it was easy, we wouldn't be here,' he says. 'We chose to be here, because it's hard.'
One of the most compelling aspects of Argonaut is its future role. Beyond the first mission in 2031, the ESA hopes to launch regular cargo runs to the moon throughout the 2030s.
These could deliver scientific experiments, solar power units, rovers, or even the water, food and air needed by astronauts. The lander itself is designed to remain on the moon for up to five years, serving as a platform for new missions or as a reminder of Europe's first step toward a permanent lunar presence.
'This lander could one day be something we visit, something we point to and say: 'That was the first one. That was ours.''
For young people looking toward careers in the space sector, Murray offers this advice: don't get bogged down in whether it's 'possible'.
'I never thought about whether it was possible or not. I just thought about what I wanted to do, and just went for it.'
He credits his success not just to technical skills, but to mindset. 'I like puzzles. I like maths. I have a good imagination for problem solving, and I don't get stressed by problems. I enjoy them.'
More than a single mission, Argonaut represents a turning point, a moment when Europe shifts from participant to pioneer. With engineers like Murray at the helm, it's clear that the ESA isn't just thinking about the moon, it's thinking about what happens after we get there.
'Everything we do is for everybody and for the future,' he adds. 'We're thinking about clean space, debris, sustainability. It's not just about getting to the moon. It's about doing it in a way that makes sense for the future.'
In the years ahead, Argonaut may quietly become one of the most important spacecraft of our time: a steady, sustainable bridge between Earth and the moon, built in Europe, for the world – and Ireland.

The Irish economy grew by 22% over the past year. Yes, you read that right
Ireland's economic data was always going to be a bit special at the start of this year. But Thursday's figures were mind-bending. It is impossible to overstate the extent to which we now stand out in international comparisons. And this is not just a curiosity – it matters. The economy, as measured by gross domestic product (GDP) , was 22 per cent larger in the first quarter of 2025 than one year earlier, according to the latest estimates from the Central Statistics Office . Think about it. The figures suggest that for every €1 of activity last year, there was €1.22 in 2025. Even comparing GDP in the first quarter of this year with the last quarter of 2024, there is a rise of close to 10 per cent – this is roughly the extent of growth across the euro zone over the past decade. Of course this bonkers data is not real, in the sense that it does not reflect what is happening in the underlying economy in which we all live. How could it? As has been long discussed the headline economic data is entirely distorted by the activities and tax planning of a small number of very big US tech and pharma companies. From time to time, this has created huge distortions in the figures. A decade ago, top US economist Paul Krugman famously described a 26 per cent GDP growth rate reported for the Irish economy (later revised up to over 30 per cent) as 'leprechaun' economics . At the time the figures were distorted by massive tax-driven investments by the companies concerned, including Apple, essentially a manoeuvre by the companies involved to try to keep their tax bills down as international rules changed. READ MORE Now, as one observer put it, we are seeing another 'Krugman' moment. This time the reasons are different. Big pharma companies have been rushing product over to the US to try to get drugs and key ingredients into the market before Donald Trump announces tariffs on the sector. This has led to a surge in exports, feeding into the GDP data. Many of these are manufactured here – and some are made elsewhere but organised by Irish subsidiaries and so also show up in our figures. And so we see a massive surge in Irish GDP in the first quarter of this year. A big – temporary – decline in pharma exports in GDP will follow at some stage, as the firms involved must now have massive stocks jammed into every free warehouse in the US. Much will depend on how the tariffs story plays out. [ Welcome (back) to the era of Leprechaun economics Opens in new window ] Whether Krugman renews his leprechaun offensive or not, let's not pretend this won't be noticed. Ireland's GDP data is not some irrelevance in a quirky economic corner. The amounts of money being moved through Ireland are now enormous. Daniel Kral, chief economist at Oxford Economics , calculates that Ireland – which accounts for 4 per cent of the euro zone economy – accounted for half its total growth over the past year. Analysts have taken to looking at the figures 'excluding Ireland'. How do we pull back from all of this to judge the underlying health of the economy? Total demand in the domestic economy – adjusted by the CSO to remove the multinational factors - rose just 1 per cent over the year. But we need to look under the surface here, too. Consumer spending, a good measure of how we feel, was up by a decent 2.5 per cent. But the overall figure was dragged down by a fall in business investment, presumably reflecting the international uncertainty. So households continued to spend in the first part of the year, but businesses are taking a wait-and-see approach to big capital spending. This is likely to be reflected in the jobs market as the year goes on – and here AI is also changing the game in many sectors. Consumers may get more cautious too. Uncertainty is starting to slow the economy and this is a trend we need to watch as the year goes on. The piece of data that seemed a bit out of line this week was a 30 per cent fall in corporation tax in May compared with the same month last year. This was affected by the comparison with a strong May last year – which the Department of Finance suggests was boosted by once-off factors. Two of our biggest taxpayers, Pfizer and Microsoft – pay significant amounts of tax that month. But the key early indicator for most of the big companies is June – and what happens here will give a good pointer for the year as a whole. The figures do underline one point. It is our huge reliance on the opaque affairs of four or five massive companies – and our exposure to the sectors they operate in, their own performance and complex decisions on how their tax structures are set up. Our latest bout of data exceptionalism again puts Ireland in the spotlight, when it would have been better to keep the head down. It underlines the outsize take Ireland is getting from pharma and tech activity in the EU – both contentious points in the White House. Notably, the US added Ireland to an economic watch list this week, based on the size of our trade surplus. We are very much on the radar in Washington. Our corporate tax take and manufacturing base are looked on enviously not only from the US , but from elsewhere in Europe. And this causes a rollercoaster of cyclical activity. But what really counts is longer-term, structural issues. Will these pharma giants decide over time – and it would take years – to relocate some of their production to the US? Will their profits and thus tax payments here be hit by Trump's policies? Or will they – or some of the tech giants – alter their corporate structures so that they pay significantly less tax here? It comes down to whether Trump's policies change the way the economic and corporate world operates fundamentally, a fair bit or not much at all. As Ireland benefits from the current system so much, the more it changes, the more risks there are for us. The coming months will tell a lot.

Scientists develop new way to detect deepfake videos
Scientists at the Netherlands Forensic Institute have developed a groundbreaking new method to identify deepfake videos by looking for subtle changes in facial colour caused by the human heartbeat. 'In video of a real person, one can detect blood flow around the eyes, forehead and jaw – and that's exactly what's missing in deepfakes', according to lead investigator Zeno Geradts, professor of forensic data science at Amsterdam University. Deepfake videos – artificial intelligence -generated content in which real people appear to do or say things they never did or said – are seen as posing risks to society because victims can be inserted into sexually explicit content, for example, or misrepresented in fake news. The new technique, called blood flow detection, uses advanced image analysis to identify tiny variations in skin tone created by a human subject's pulse – variations that are absent in manufactured or manipulated footage. READ MORE When the Dutch team first investigated the issue 13 years ago, poor video quality made such sophisticated analysis impossible. Since then, video technology has evolved, and a combination of improved picture resolution – measured in terms of the number of pixels in a video frame – and rapidly developing artificial intelligence (AI) tools has allowed the experts to successfully revisit the problem. 'When we looked at this first in 2012, we were being asked by police to analyse so-called snuff videos showing extreme violence, including torture and murder, circulated via dark web platforms and on encrypted messaging apps. 'We were trying to find a way to establish scientifically that the victims being shown in those videos were real people.' The fundamental crux was the inadequacy of video compression technology, said Prof Geradts. 'Large video files had to be reduced in size and during that compression process the colour differences per heartbeat were lost. 'But now, more than a decade later, compression methods have improved and we can detect even the slightest discolouration caused by pulsing blood flow.' How to manage your pension in these volatile times Listen | 37:00 In the most recent tests, volunteers were filmed wearing heart monitors and their heart rates were then matched against colour changes at 79 points on the face, under a range of lighting conditions and varieties of movement. The project confirmed a strong correlation between visible colour changes and the heart rate measurements in all the different settings. The results, say the Dutch team, were 'very promising'. 'AI can do a lot but it still cannot generate a convincing pulse', said Prof Geradts. Although it is used in individual investigations, blood flow detection is not yet in routine forensic use, mainly because it hasn't been fully validated for use in court cases – but that may be just a matter of time. 'In the world we live in, forensic research into deepfakes is more urgent than ever,' said Prof Geradts. 'I sometimes worry that soon everything will be regarded as potentially fake. Then how will we know what's real?' According to a Dutch national helpline for victims of online abuse, reports of deepfake pornography and manipulated nude images increased in the Netherlands by 31 per cent in 2024.

FD Technologies chairwoman urges investors to back takeover
FD Technologies chair Donna Troy has urged investors to back a £541.6 million (€643.04 million) sale of the Newry-based data and analytics company to US private equity firm TA Associates at a special meeting on June 30th, saying there are risks to it delivering on its full potential as a standalone public company. The company's remaining business, KX, which analyses large data sets in real time to help companies predict and respond to market conditions across the various business areas, may be hampered by 'uncertain public markets' if it needs to accelerate investment to capture opportunities in artificial intelligence (AI). 'Furthermore, FD Technologies is a relatively small player in a large, but fast-moving, fragmented market,' Ms Troy said in a letter to shareholders, contained in documents relating to the planned deal, published on the company's website on Friday. 'Competing with a number of larger, very well capitalised software providers and consequently the FD Technologies, directors are cautiously aware of execution risk to delivering its strategy and the associated value to FD Technologies shareholders.' Shareholders are being offered the choice of taking cash for their stock or rolling their shares into the bid vehicle. 'The FD Technologies board does not give any recommendation to FD Technologies shareholders as to whether they should elect for the alternative offer [of taking shares in the bid vehicle],' the company said. 'FD Technologies shareholders should determine whether acquiring or holding rollover shares is affected by the laws or regulations of the relevant jurisdiction in which they reside and consider the advantages and disadvantages of electing for the alternative offer, and whether rollover shares are a suitable investment in light of their own personal circumstance.'
