Ministry of Primary Industries forecasts export revenue increase of 12% for food, fibre sector

New Zealand's food and fibre export revenue is expected to have reached $59.9b in the year ending June 2025, an increase of 12 percent from the previous year.
Despite warnings that global trade tensions may affect New Zealand's overall export performance, the Ministry of Primary Industries has confidence the food and fibre sector is resilient enough to grow further, forecasting $65.7b 2029.
MPI has released its latest State and Outlook of Primary Industries (SOPI) report, which takes a look at the state of the sector in the 2024/25 year.
In the year to June 2025, dairy export revenue was forecast to have increased by 16 percent on the previous year to a record high of $27b, meat and wool 8 percent to $12.3b, horticulture 19 percent to $8.5b, forestry 9 percent to $6.3b and seafood 2 percent $2.2b.
The increases are a rebound on the previous year's figures, which showed a
7 percent dip in 2023-24
on the year prior.
Global dairy prices in general have been much higher this year due to weak global supply from key exporting regions like the US, and increased import demand from China.
The same was said of meat and wool, with tighter global production and strong demand increasing the export revenue.
Apples and pears were a large driver of the horticulture increase, due to increases in export volume and average price.
The agriculture and forestry minister Todd McClay said the numbers reflected the hard work farmers had put in.
"Farmers are innovating and they're becoming more productive, but also New Zealand's reputation around the world for high-quality, safe food is increasing," he said.

In the report, MPI's director-general Ray Smith said tighter global production across dairy and meat, coupled with some favourable weather in New Zealand, had helped to improve export revenue.
"It's an outstanding result that surpasses by $3 billion forecasts made in December and reflects the continuing strength and popularity of Kiwi products across the world," Smith said.
Arable export revenue faced a small 1 percent decline to $340m, with processed food and other products also declining by 1 percent to $3.4b.
The arable decline was due to weak ryegrass seed demand and a poor clover season, with the report predicting next season's exports were likely to remain flat amid market uncertainty.
Overall, the report said the food and fibre sector was performing well despite "geopolitical turbulence, shifting trade policies and elevated uncertainty".
While the forecasts are higher than last year's tracking in the short-term, MPI has revised longer-term forecasts downward.
Forecast tracking in the June 2024 SOPI predicted that by 2028 export revenue would be $66.56b, but this year's predicts $64.32b by 2028.
Tariffs were cited as a contributor to the ongoing trade uncertainty, though the report expected sectors would continue to grow despite that.
"While this uncertainty may soften global demand and affect New Zealand's export performance, the food and fibre sector is generally more resilient than others, given its lower sensitivity to price fluctuations where commodities make up the bulk of our export revenue."

An expected weakening in the NZD/USD exchange rate could also offset the effects of global volatility.
However, the report acknowledged that uncertainty made it more difficult than usual to achieve a consensus in economic projections.
"I think the modelling is probably on the gentler side. They're being cautious around this," McClay said.
The government has set a goal of doubling the value of New Zealand's total exports by 2034.
McClay, who is also the trade minister, remained optimistic.
He pointed to trade deals like those with the EU, United Arab Emirates and Gulf Cooperation Council which had recently come into force or were going to in the near future, as well as ongoing negotiations with India.
"I've got negotiators up there talking to them at the moment. If we can crack that market, there will be extra opportunity for Kiwis, not only in the first year but in the decades to come," he said.
"As long as farmers keep producing high-quality, safe foods, as a government we'll keep working to open the doors for them."
McClay said during recent visits to China, he had observed there was increased demand for ready meals, and that was an opportunity for New Zealand to explore further.
"They're looking for quality, they like the New Zealand story. They want to know where their food comes from, and they're willing to pay more for it."
China remains New Zealand's largest market by a significant margin, with 31 percent of all exports.
The United States is second on 12 percent, with Australia, the EU and Japan rounding out the top 5.
China led in dairy, horticulture, forestry and seafood exports.
The United States led in meat and wool exports, the EU in arable and Australia in processed food and other products.

Du Val property group heads to court to fight decision to put it into receivership

The Du Val property group is heading to court on Monday to try to fight the decision to put it into receivership and freeze the assets of founders Charlotte and Kenyon Clarke. The group of about 70 entities and the Clarkes themselves were put into receivership by the Financial Markets Authority last year, with the companies eventually put into the more serious statutory management by the government in August. At last count its debts were more than $300 million . Despite that, Kenyon Clarke maintained none of the current situation "was our making," suggesting it was Du Val that was the victim. Deccan Property Services did painting, GIB stopping and fixing, and provided general labour at a Du Val development in Mount Wellington. Its owner, Aniket Bapat, said the company was owed about $230,000 - a debt that nearly wiped his company out. "We've... been just hanging by a thin strand of hair, not even thread," he said. His was one of about 75 companies listed by statutory managers, PWC, as being owed money by Du Val Construction, otherwise known as Blue River Holdings, a residential building arm of the property group. Many were family businesses. Bapat said his company had to use profits from all their other jobs to pay their own staff and bills from the Du Val job, and they had to use a loan and overdraft to help, he said. Most of the next year's profits had gone into paying off the loan and they were still struggling, he said. "Even now if we don't see enough jobs coming, we are paranoid... we are literally just keeping the tip of our nose above water," he said. As the company began to recover, it had put in more safeguards, and Bapat has had therapy to help with the mental health impact. "It was bloody stressful," he said. Like the other creditors, he will have to wait for the outcome of the statutory management process to see if he gets paid, but has had to move on. Lisa Moroni owns Precision Cleaning Services and said she was owed about $80,000. "It was very hard because... we are a small to medium business and we run pay cheque to pay cheque and that was a massive project for us," she said. Most of the outstanding amount was from a big, final clean of one of the developments after construction was complete, she said. "It's a lot of work done in two or three months and when you don't get paid it does affect the business a lot," she said. They had to lay off staff and move out of their downtown office to cut costs," she said. An owner of a large concrete cutting and drilling firm who did not want to be named said they were owed about $17,000. Though it was not as big as some others' debts, it had still been stressful, she said. She went to Du Val to try to get some money back to no avail. "We drill a hole through a wall... so if we don't get paid there is nothing that we can go retrieve, like our consumables or materials," she said. "We laugh that we should maybe go and fill the hole back up." Bapat said he regretted giving Du Val the benefit of the doubt that money was coming - and had learned a hard lesson to be less trusting. RNZ spoke to several more Du Val Construction creditors who did not want to be interviewed but expressed similar sentiments. They said they did not expect to get any money back but they wanted more information from PWC about what was happening in the process. A handful of other creditors said they had been paid in full and did not have a problem. One felt if Du Val had been allowed to keep operating, it could have gone on to sell its developments and everyone would have been paid. The Du Val founders remain defiant, suggesting it is the company and its investors who are the victims of heavy handedness by the Financial Markets Authority and the receivers. In a lengthy statement to RNZ, Kenyon Clarke said prior to the FMA actions there were no financial concerns that were not capable of being managed and the group was on track to deliver a return to shareholders, investors and contractors. "We can confidently say that none of this was of our making and was action taken without us being able to fight for those we have worked closely for and with," he said. "It has been a horrible and frightening thing to witness, and we understand and feel for all those impacted." It was telling that the FMA had not taken any further action in the 10 months since statutory management, he said. Clarke also hits out at the PWC saying it lacked business acumen in the development sector and had made the group's financial position worse. The company would seek compensation, he said. At the time the government put Du Val into statutory management, it said it was an option of last resort used only where there was complex corporate failure. It did so because of the complexity and scale, saying there were between 120 and 150 home buyers and commercial lenders "tangled up" in the situation, it said. Du Val creditors spoken to by RNZ maintain there were sometimes months-long delays in getting paid in the lead up to the statutory management. PWC and the FMA declined to comment on Clarke's statements. PWC said creditors who wanted more information could find it on its website, or email the team. "To most effectively and efficiently work with the large number of entities and stakeholders related to the Du Val Group, we prioritise providing updates when significant matters are resolved or analysis completed," a spokesperson said. The legal action taking place on Monday is in the civil branch of the High Court in Auckland. There are no charges against Du Val or the Clarkes. The Clarkes are challenging the Financial Market Authorities' decision to appoint receivers for both for them and Du Val last year, which culminated in the government putting Du Val into statutory management on the FMA's recommendation. PWC has been both the statutory managers and the receivers for the Clarkes' personal financial situation since then. Despite the legal challenge, the statutory management and receivership processes have been continuing. At least part of the delay to allow the Clarkes to appoint a lawyer. They now have Ron Mansfield KC. The Clarkes have also been given the right to appeal a High Court decision forcing them to be interviewed under oath by receivers, PWC. PWC wants to interview the couple about the assets in their possession - including whether they were purchased by the Clarkes themselves or by Du Val companies. So far the couple has refused and it will be up to the Court of Appeal to decide. NZ-Dutch company Dawn Aerospace sells its first spaceplane

The company has signed a US$17 million ($28m NZD) agreement to supply its Mk-II Aurora rocket-powered aircraft to the US state of Oklahoma. Under the deal, Dawn would provide the vehicle and everything needed to operate it, like ground support equipment, licensing, creating a support team, and parts and servicing. The aircraft would be based at the Oklahoma Air and Space Port, with delivery scheduled for 2027 and manufacturing to take place in Christchurch. Dawn chief executive Stefan Powell said it was "huge" for the company and the industry. "This is really the first time anyone has been able to buy a spacefaring capability," he said. "Normally you can buy a service, someone will take your thing to space or suborbital." Powell said it marked a significant moment for the global space industry. "It's really about transitioning the industry away from a single-use service, to more like an airline model, which we believe is far more scalable," Powell said. The Aurora is a remote-piloted aircraft and can carry small payloads of up to 5kg to altitudes of 100 kilometres (330,000 feet), and has a turnaround time of four hours. The company has been in the process of testing and developing the aircraft, which can take off from a runway. In 2024, the Mk-II Aurora broke the sound barrier, reaching Mach 1.12 at 82,500 ft (25,146m), and setting a record for the fastest climb to 20 kilometres (65,600 ft).
