"Emerging drug resistance to the small number of antimalarial drugs is a growing problem," said Manoj Duraisingh, one of the study's lead authors. "This map will be an invaluable resource to help researchers combat one of the leading causes of infectious disease death around the world."
So why is this such a big deal? Because understanding the parasite at the genetic level gives scientists a major advantage in tackling malaria at its source. "Given its rich mix of bioactives, we wanted to examine how midlife intake may relate to healthy aging outcomes decades later—especially in a well-characterized cohort with repeated dietary measures." Researchers found that women who drank regular, caffeinated coffee—not tea or decaf—had a modest, but measurable increase in the likelihood of meeting criteria for "healthy aging" by age 70. These criteria included being free from 11 major chronic diseases, having intact physical function and mental health, and reporting no memory complaints. "Caffeine likely plays a role, but it's not the only factor," Mahdavi said. "Caffeinated coffee contains a broader range of bioactive compound—including certain polyphenols and diterpenes—that may be altered or diminished during decaffeination. "It's also possible that individuals who drink decaf differ systematically in health or behavior, though we adjusted for many of those variables." What To Know On average, women in the study who aged in a healthy way consumed around 315 mg of caffeine daily—roughly equivalent to three small cups of coffee. Each additional cup was tied to a 2-to-5% increase in the odds of healthy aging, up to a threshold of five small cups per day. The researchers noted that, for most people, two cups of coffee per day are generally safe and potentially beneficial. By contrast, soda consumption was associated with a 20-to-26% reduction in the likelihood of healthy aging, which suggests not all caffeine sources offer similar benefits. "The clearest takeaway was how consistent the findings were," Mahdavi told Newsweek. "Even after accounting for factors like smoking, [body mass index] and overall diet quality, moderate caffeinated coffee intake in midlife remained positively associated with healthy aging. "By contrast, cola consumption was associated with a substantially lower likelihood of aging well—nearly four times the magnitude, in the opposite direction." Health Benefits of Coffee Previous research has linked coffee consumption to a range of health benefits, including a reduced risk of several chronic conditions. Studies published in journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine and Circulation (NEJM) have found associations between regular coffee consumption and lower rates of Type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, stroke and cardiovascular disease. A 2012 study in NEJM involving more than 400,000 participants found that people who drank coffee had a lower risk of death over the study period, whether it was caffeinated or decaf. A 2017 umbrella review in The BMJ found that coffee consumption was, "more often associated with benefit than harm," for a range of health outcomes. However, researchers have also cautioned that drinking too much coffee may pose risks for people with certain conditions, or low caffeine tolerance. "Not all beverages are equal when it comes to long-term health," Mahdavi said. "Moderate caffeinated coffee—1-to-3 cups per day—may support healthy aging, but more importantly, it can be part of a broader lifestyle that includes nutrient-rich foods, regular physical activity and avoiding harmful exposures. "The study adds to the growing body of evidence that everyday dietary choices, even in midlife, matter for how we age."

Eating healthier can protect aging brain, study says
People who improved their healthy eating in middle-age had a 25% lower risk of lower risk of dementia, compared to those whose diets got worse, according to findings reported Monday at a meeting of the American Society for Nutrition. Adobe stock/HealthDay June 2 (UPI) -- It's never too late to start eating right as a means of protecting your brain health, a new study says. People who improved their healthy eating in middle-age had a 25% lower risk of lower risk of dementia, compared to those whose diets got worse, according to findings reported Monday at a meeting of the American Society for Nutrition. "Our study findings confirm that healthy dietary patterns in mid to late life and their improvement over time may prevent Alzheimer's and related dementias," researcher Song-Yi Park, an associate professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, said in a news release. "This suggests that it is never too late to adopt a healthy diet to prevent dementia," she added. For the study, researchers analyzed data from nearly 93,000 adults taking part in a long-term health study. Participants were between 45 and 75 when the study started in the 1990s, and more than 21,000 developed Alzheimer's disease or dementia in the years that followed. Study participants filled out diet questionnaires, and researchers assessed their responses to gauge their adherence to the MIND (Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay) diet. The MIND diet combines the Mediterranean diet with the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet, two eating patterns that have been shown to improve people's health. It emphasizes whole grains, vegetables, nuts, beans, berries, poultry and fish, while recommending that people limit pastries, sweets, red meat, cheese, fried foods and butter/margarine, according to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Overall, people whose diets aligned with the MIND eating pattern from the start had a 9% lower risk of dementia. An even greater reduction of 13% was seen among Black, Hispanic or white people, results show. "We found that the protective relationship between a healthy diet and dementia was more pronounced among African Americans, Latinos and Whites, while it was not as apparent among Asian Americans and showed a weaker trend in Native Hawaiians," Park said. "A tailored approach may be needed when evaluating different subpopulations' diet quality." However, people whose diets grew closer to the MIND diet over a 10-year period had a 25% lower risk of dementia - even if they didn't follow that eating pattern closely at first, researchers found. Park presented the study this morning at the ASN meeting in Orlando, Fla. Findings presented at medical meetings should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal. Women who drink coffee every day age better, according to a new study. Researchers found that women who enjoy three small daily cups of caffeinated coffee in middle age stay sharp, strong and mentally well as they get older. But tea and decaffeinated coffee didn't show the same benefits while colas were "strongly associated" with less healthy ageing, according to the findings of the study that followed thousands of women for 30 years. Study author Dr Sara Mahdavi said: 'While past studies have linked coffee to individual health outcomes, our study is the first to assess coffee's impact across multiple domains of aging over three decades. 'The findings suggest that caffeinated coffee - not tea or decaf - may uniquely support aging trajectories that preserve both mental and physical function." Chan School of Public Health in the US, and an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto, Canada, said: 'Our study has several key strengths. In addition to the large sample size and 30 years of follow-up, we assessed several different aspects of longevity and healthy aging as well as very comprehensive information on nutritional and lifestyle habits that were collected every four years after the initiation of the study.' The study included 47,513 women with dietary and health data collected since 1984. The research team assessed caffeine intake using questionnaires that included consumption of top contributors of caffeine such as coffee, tea, cola and decaffeinated coffee. Healthy ageing was defined as living to age 70 or older, being free from 11 major chronic diseases, maintaining physical function, having good mental health, and showing no cognitive impairment or memory complaints. After 30 years, the research team estimated how the likelihood of healthy ageing changed for every 80mg of caffeine that the study participants consumed per day. They also examined specific drinks including coffee, tea, decaffeinated coffee, per eight-ounce cup, and cola, per 12-ounce glass. The analysis accounted for other factors that might influence healthy ageing including body weight, smoking, alcohol use, physical activity, education level and protein in the diet. By 2016, 3,706 of the women in the study met all the requirements for being considered healthy agers. In middle age, from 45 to 60, those women typically consumed an average of 315 mg of caffeine per day - about the amount in three small cups of coffee or 1.5 large cups by today's standards. More than 80% of that caffeine came from regular coffee consumption. For women in the healthy agers group, each extra cup of coffee per day was tied to a 2% to 5% higher chance of doing well later in life, up to five small cups per day, or about 2.5 cups according to today's measures. The research team didn't find any significant association between drinking decaffeinated coffee or tea with an increased likelihood of healthy ageing. And each additional small glass of pop - another major source of caffeine - was associated with a 20% to 26% lower likelihood of healthy ageing. The researchers say the findings indicate that not all sources of caffeine confer benefits. Dr Mahdavi said: 'These results, while preliminary, suggest that small, consistent habits can shape long-term health. 'Moderate coffee intake may offer some protective benefits when combined with other healthy behaviours such as regular exercise, a healthy diet and avoiding smoking. While this study adds to prior evidence suggesting coffee intake may be linked with healthy ageing, the benefits from coffee are relatively modest compared to the impact of overall healthy lifestyle habits and warrant further investigation.' The researchers note that, in general, up to two cups of coffee per day should be safe and potentially beneficial for most people. Beyond that, drinking more may offer additional benefits for some - but may not be healthy for others. Dr. Mahdavi and her colleagues have shown in a previous study that genetic variation can influence the relationship between caffeine intake and health outcomes, so more caffeine isn't always better- particularly for people with lower caffeine tolerance or specific genetic susceptibility. The team now plan to investigate how specific bioactive compounds in coffee interact with genetic and metabolic ageing markers, especially in women. They say that understanding those mechanisms could guide personalised medicine approaches to develop diets that support healthy ageing. Dr Mahdavi presented the findings at the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition in Orlando, Florida.
