Greek police arrest man on southern island of Crete on suspicion of espionage
ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greek authorities arrested a man on the southern island of Crete on suspicion of espionage, police said Monday.
The man, who was not identified in accordance with Greek regulations on suspects, was arrested Sunday in cooperation with Greece's National Intelligence Service, police added.
Local media reported that the man was from Azerbaijan and was carrying a Polish passport. He was reportedly found to have taken thousands of photos of military installations and warships.
Crete is the site of the United States' Souda Bay naval base, a strategically important deep-water port in the eastern Mediterranean that can accommodate aircraft carriers.
The suspect was taken to court Monday for an initial hearing. He was given until Wednesday to prepare his defense.

The accusations stem from their use of funds in the 2022 election that carried Chaves to power. Prosecutors said Chaves and the others used a private fund and private bank accounts to finance the campaign of Chaves' Social Democratic Progress Party. Chaves ' office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The others accused include Vice President Stephan Brunner, Foreign Affairs Minister Arnoldo André and lawmakers Pilar Cisneros, Luz Mary Alpízar, Paola Nájera and Waldo Agüero. 'Both financing routes operated outside the control of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal and the party's treasury as required by the electoral code,' prosecutors said in the statement. By doing so, the politicians allegedly violated principles of legality and transparency that govern campaign finance, 'affecting the integrity of the electoral process.' The politicians will only face trial if the Supreme Court agrees to suspend their immunity from prosecution.

Dominican prosecutors in Wander Franco trial seek 5-year prison sentence
PUERTO PLATA, Dominican Republic (AP) — Dominican prosecutors requested on Monday that suspended Tampa Bay Rays player Wander Franco, who faces charges of sexual abuse involving a girl who was 14 years old at the time of the alleged crimes, be sentenced to five years in prison. The prosecutors said in court there is sufficient evidence to prove Franco had a relationship with the minor for four months and that he transferred large sums of money to the minor's mother to consent to the illegal relationship. The prosecutors also requested the minor's mother be sentenced to 10 years in prison, arguing she sexually trafficked her daughter. In a previous hearing, prosecutors described the evidence presented as 'convincing' and 'compelling.' Documents that prosecutors presented to the judge last year and were viewed by The Associated Press alleged that Franco, through his mother Yudelka Aybar, transferred 1 million pesos ($17,000) to the mother of the minor on Jan. 5, 2023, to consent to purported abuse. Franco was in his third major league season when his career was halted in August 2023. He agreed to an 11-year, $182 million contract in November 2021. He is currently on Major League Baseball's restricted list after initially being placed on administrative leave.
