Uttarakhand chopper crash: PM Modi speaks to CM Dhami, assures support from Centre

Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], June 15 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spoke to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in the wake of the tragic helicopter crash in the state.
As per an official statement from Uttarakhand Chief Minister office, Chief Minister Dhami informed the Prime Minister that a high-level meeting was held immediately after the incident and instructions have been given to probe the incident.
'Prime Minister prayed for the strength to bear this loss to the families of the deceased. He assured all possible cooperation from the central government. Chief Minister Dhami informed the Prime Minister that a high-level meeting has been held immediately after the incident. Instructions have been given to constitute a high-level inquiry committee to thoroughly investigate the causes of the accident. Also, a Command and Coordination Center will be set up for better coordination and quick action,' as per a statement from Uttarakhand Chief Minister office.
A helicopter crashed in the Kedarnath sector in which seven people on board the helicopter, died on the spot.
Five adults, one infant and one crew member were on board the Aryan Aviation's Bell 407 helicopter operating in the 'Shri Kedarnath Ji - Aryan Helipad, Guptkashi' sector that crashed on Sunday, the Civil Aviation Ministry said in a statement.
The helicopter took off from Guptkashi at 05:10 am and landed at Shri Kedarnath Ji Helipad at 05:18 am before departing again at 05:19 am for Guptkashi and is reported to have crashed near Gaurikund between 05:30 am to 05:45 am, the statement said.
The ministry said that preliminary indications suggest that the probable cause of the crash may be Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT), with the helicopter reportedly airborne despite poor visibility and extensive clouding at the valley entry area. The exact cause will be determined through a detailed investigation by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). (ANI)

Cyprus, which has been engaged in territorial disputes with Turkey which invaded the island in 1974 and occupied its north, has consistently supported India's position on Kashmir, cross-border terrorism and UN Security Council reforms. Besides countering the Islamabad-Ankara alignment, the visit to the Mediterranean nation also comes at a time when Delhi is looking to build bridges with Europe – External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar just concluded a six-day visit to France and Belgium. Cyprus is set to hold the rotating presidency of the EU Council in 2026, and this visit by the Prime Minister will work to deepen India-EU collaboration. 'Cyprus is a close friend and an important partner in the Mediterranean region and the EU. The visit provides an opportunity to build upon the historical bonds and expand our ties in the areas of trade, investment, security, technology and promote people-to-people exchanges,' Modi said in a departure statement Sunday morning. He will be received at the Presidential Palace Monday and, according to Euronews, might even be given a tour of the ceasefire line in Nicosia by the President himself. The visit to the Green Line, the UN-controlled buffer zone, if it happens, will be a strong message to Turkey on the North Cyprus issue. It will be a response to Turkey's support to Pakistan on the Kashmir issue – Pakistan also backs Turkey on North Cyprus. The official talks Monday between the two leaders will also touch upon the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). Cyprus's maritime connectivity and strategic location makes it a potential hub in the IMEC project, which was mooted by India during its G20 Presidency in 2023. As India seeks to diversify its energy sources, Cyprus being a key player in eastern Mediterranean natural gas exploration becomes crucial. In fact, strong India-Cyprus ties may help India get broad-based EU support for its various global initiatives, besides the IMEC. Locked in territorial disputes with Turkey and facing security challenges, Cyprus is looking to expand defence cooperation and will welcome any assistance from India. Delhi is also aiming to consolidate international support following Operation Sindoor, and the fact that Modi's stopover at Cyprus precedes his departure for Canada and attendance at the G7 Summit is also telling. 'This three-nation tour is also an opportunity to thank partner countries for their steadfast support to India in our fight against cross-border terrorism, and to galvanise global understanding on tackling terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,' Modi said ahead of his departure Sunday morning. From Cyprus, he departs Monday for Kananaskis to attend the G7 Summit at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. 'The Summit will provide space for exchange of views on pressing global issues and the priorities of the Global South. I also look forward to engaging with leaders from partner countries,' Modi said. While the agenda for the G7 huddle is focussed on building supply chains for critical minerals, energy security and countering transnational crime, discussions could be on the raging Israel-Iran conflict and containing escalation. Modi is likely to have discussions with various stakeholders on the issue and express India's oft-repeated stance on dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward. The last leg of the Prime Minister's three-nation trip will take him to Croatia, where he will meet President Zoran Milanovic and Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic. 'Both our countries enjoy centuries-old close cultural links. As the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Croatia, it will open new avenues for bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest,' Modi said. Air India plane crash: Dreamliner's FDR and CVR located, says govt statement
Statements by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) and the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Sunday said that the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) of Air India flight AI 171 had been located. Investigators had earlier found the Flight Data Recorder (FDR), one of the black boxes, at the crash site. The statements came on a day when the Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, P K Mishra, visited Ahmedabad to assess the situation following the June 12 crash that killed 241 passengers and crew, and many others on the ground. The PIB release said: 'The AAIB (Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau) has launched a detailed investigation, and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is conducting a parallel probe under international protocols since the aircraft is American-made. Officials confirmed that the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) have been located and secured.' Mishra reviewed the accident site near the B J Medical College, Meghaninagar, where senior officials from the state government, the AAIB and the Airports Authority of India briefed him on the sequence of events and immediate response measures. Mishra also met bereaved families and injured victims, observed DNA sample matching and directed authorities to provide full assistance to those affected. He held a meeting at Ahmedabad Circuit House and discussed relief and investigation efforts with senior officials from the central and state governments, the AAIB and the Airports Authority of India. The Principal Secretary was accompanied by PMO officials Tarun Kapoor, Advisor to the PM, and Mangesh Ghildiyal, Deputy Secretary, PMO.

India, EU committed to free trade agreement by year-end: PM Modi in Cyprus
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday began his five-day, three-nation visit with a stop in Cyprus, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the island nation in over two decades. He was received at the airport by Cyprus President Nikos key highlight of the visit was his address at the India-Cyprus CEO Forum in Limassol, where he pitched India as a hub of digital innovation, infrastructure development and economic opportunity. He also mentioned that India and the European Union are working towards a free trade agreement by the end of this Modi said India has undergone significant transformation over the past decade, especially in the fields of digital payments, innovation, and infrastructure. He said, "It has happened after six decades that the same government has been elected for the third consecutive time." Pointing to India's rapid digital growth, he said, "There has been a digital revolution in the last 10 years. Financial inclusion has become an example of this. Today, 50 per cent of the world's digital transactions take place in India through UPI. Many countries, like France, are associated with it. Talks are going on to include Cyprus in this and I welcome it."He also highlighted the annual investment of over USD 100 billion in India's infrastructure sector, particularly in maritime and port development, shipbuilding, shipbreaking and civil aviation. PM Modi said a new shipbuilding policy is also being on India's startup ecosystem, he added, "Innovation has become a strong pillar of India's economic strength. Our more than 1 lakh startups sell solutions, not just dreams."In his address, the Prime Minister welcomed the establishment of the India, Cyprus and Greece Business and Investment Council, calling it "a very good initiative" with the potential to become an important platform for trilateral economic cooperation. He assured business leaders that ideas and suggestions shared during the forum would be taken forward through a concrete action Modi also noted that the Cyprus Stock Exchange and India's National Stock Exchange have agreed to cooperate in GIFT City, Gujarat. He invited Cypriot investors and business leaders to explore opportunities in to trade relations with Europe, he said, "Now we are committed to concluding a free trade agreement between India and the European Union by the end of this year. There is momentum in its negotiation."Earlier, PM Modi also shared a post on X, saying, "Strengthening business ties! President Nikos Christodoulides and I met with top CEOs, with the aim of strengthening trade ties between India and Cyprus.
