Judge in Senzo Meyiwa matter reprimands advocate for prioritising Comrades run over murder trial
Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng has condemned Advocate Mnisi's request to miss court for the upcoming Comrades Marathon, calling it unprofessional and disrespectful amid long delays in the high-profile Senzo Meyiwa murder trial.
THE PRESIDING judge in the murder trial of former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa ran out of patience when he learnt that an advocate representing one of the accused in the matter won't attend court on Monday because he was running in Sunday's Comrades Marathon.
Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng was mindful that Meyiwa was killed in 2014 and his family were waiting for justice to be served and similarly, the accused have been held in custody for three years.
Therefore, he baulked at learning that Advocate Charles Mnisi requested to be excused from proceedings because of the race.
The judge, visibly furious, made it clear that the seriousness of the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial could not be sidelined for personal activities.
"I'm not going to respond. If Mr Mnisi doesn't want to come to court on Monday, that's his business. I will be in court and the JP expects me to be in court," said Judge Mokgoatlheng.
"(I) Can't tell the JP (judge president) somebody's going to run the marathon. So, the case should stop. Everybody should watch the marathon, I suppose."
He referenced several other judges who are athletes, including Judge Boissie Mbha and Constitutional Court Judge Rammaka Mathopo, pointing out that none of them have ever let athletic commitments interfere with their judicial responsibilities.

Bafana and Tanzania in dull goalless draw
Bafana Bafana were held to a 0-0 draw by Tanzania during their dull international friendly at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Friday night. Bafana coach Hugo Broos said the result is not important in this match but they will have to give an improved performance when they host Mozambique at the same venue on Tuesday. It was a match of few notable moments where Broos gave opportunities to Ricardo Goss, Deano van Rooyen, Thabo Moloisane, Kulumane Ndamane, Fawaaz Basadien, Simphiwe Selepe, Tshepang Moremi and Ashley Cupido in the starting line-up. Some of the Bafana ordinarily would not be considered but they benefited from the absence of their Mamelodi Sundowns counterparts who leaves at the weekend for the Fifa Club World Cup in the US. Broos left Sipho Chaine, Nyiko Mobbie, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Luke le Roux and Relebohile Mofokeng, who have been with the team in the recent past, to provide options in the second half.

All eyes are on Bidi as he tackles the Comrades this Sunday
All eyes are on Bidi as he tackles the Comrades this Sunday The time has arrived for eMalahleni's blind athlete to face one of the greatest adventures of his life. Bidi Barrett will compete in the Comrades Marathon this coming Sunday. After months of preparation and fine-tuning the details, Bidi and his two guides, Jean-Michel Masson and Susan van der Spuy, are tackling the gruelling race from Pietermaritzburg City Hall to Durban. This will be the 49th down run and is slightly longer than the previous down run in 2023, as the finish has been moved to a street outside People's Park. Bidi and his team will be running 89.98km. eMalahleni made this dream possible for the runner who lost his sight at birth. After Bidi crossed the finish line at the Kaapsehoop 42km race in November, he earned his place in the Comrades. A BackABuddy crowd fundraiser was started as Bidi needed financial assistance with this journey. The amount was raised in a jiffy and the 37-year-old runner was kitted out, and his entry and accommodation paid. 'And so Team Bidi Barrett sets off on our journey to the ultimate human race. What a privilege and honour it is to be part of this courageous, resilient, and inspirational story. All in all, powered by the Holy Spirit,' Jean-Michel said. Bidi thanked everyone who supported him in this dream come true.
