Lionel Richie opens up about gruelling life on the road as he kicks off his first UK tour in a decade

The Sun2 days ago

HE is one of the most enduring names in music and, at 75, is still gaining new fans.
As he kicked off his first UK tour in a decade, it is clear things are different for Lionel Richie these days, with his beloved red wine switched for electrolyte-filled water to keep him on top form on the road.

And as Bizarre's Jack joined him in his dressing room ahead of his first show in Belfast on Saturday night, Lionel issued an invitation for his mate King Charles to come and sing with him.
He said: 'If The King wants to sing Easy like Sunday Morning with me, that's fantastic. It would be a hoot.'
But despite his royal connections, Lionel admitted you might still find him in a British boozer.
He said: 'I have my pub master Bernie.
"He will take me to the latest and the greatest of the pubs.'
And would he indulge in some of our great British pub snacks, like a bag of pork scratchings?
'Have I ever had some weird British food? Yes,' Lionel says with a laugh
'I had black pudding, I did not like it.
"I was warming up on it for a moment and then they told me what it was and, psychologically, I just went off the rails.
'There will be no black pudding on tour for sure.'
Opening up about going back on the road, Lionel explained: 'It's called play period.
'It's an excuse to leave the house and act silly all over again, otherwise life becomes boring.
'Going on tour is the best ever as my fans put on a show better than I can.
"When I look out into the audience, I see all the afro wigs and moustaches . . . and that is just the girls.
'It is Lionel in the Seventies, Eighties, Nineties and Noughties — they put me all together in these various outfits.
"It is amazing and fun to watch.'
Now almost six decades into his career, Lionel travels with a small team including a physical therapist.
Lionel said: 'You have to be in shape.
"You might think that it's easy to walk on that stage but try two hours of that, plus running, plus singing.
"You do that multiple times, well you better be in good condition. It is set up to wipe you out.
'PROTECT YOUR VOCALS'
'I have been doing it for so long now, it's like second nature. But don't take it for granted.'
Another secret weapon in his touring armour is bringing along his own pillow on tour.
He explained: 'I elevate the bed at an angle as that keeps the acid reflux at bay.
"The most important part you are trying to protect is your vocals.
'Eating late is also a disaster because trying to sleep and digest food at the same time calls for a rough voice.'
But while he has a team with him at all times, Lionel isn't dishing out a list of diva demands.
Nor is he sitting in hair and make-up for hours.

He said: 'The one thing I can't do is a lot of hair and make- up. I don't know how people can do it.'
'I sweat a lot and on the first two songs, whatever make-up I had on, or whatever hair style I had, leaves immediately.
"And I don't really need make-up by that point.
'I am on stage and enjoying it.
"The last thing I would want is my mascara to be running. That is not a good look.'
Even a pre-gig tipple is out of the question.
Lionel laughed: 'Alcohol before a show? No, no, we don't do that.
'Back in The Commodores days you could do anything. You're bulletproof.
'But now, alcohol? No. Just get me out on stage with as much water and things to get the electrolytes going and that is it.
'I don't even know how we survived the Seventies and Eighties. It was fun though.'
7
Lionel added: 'Ten years ago I used to love red wine and I tried to let that be my potion to bring me down.
"That phased out of my whole existence as purple teeth by the end of the tour was not going to be the way I wanted to go.
'I get a great bite to eat, lots of water and just wait for yourself to come down.
'Though I must admit, a good massage is needed. You need to just let your body come down.
'The worst thing to do is to try and jump into bed and think you are going to go to sleep.
"You twitch for about four hours as your adrenaline is too high.'
As we chatted in his dressing room, the rolling news channel on his TV showed King Charles, and conversation turned to His Majesty.
Despite the invitation for a singalong, Lionel admitted: 'Listen, this guy is so busy.
'He is probably going to be the first royal to travel as much as you can imagine.
'I can see him moving around quite a bit but is he going to pop into the show and surprise me? You never know.
'Now Camilla, that would be possible.
"She is a hoot in the kindest of respects. She is so funny and she has such a good sense of humour.
"They both do. I love her sense of humour."
We'd pay seriously good money to see that.

Love Islander's secret connection to former star revealed

LOVE Island newbie Dejon Noel Williams is getting ready to start his villa adventure – and thankfully he has a famous pal who may have been able to provide him some tips. The 26-year-old personal trainer from London was one of the first stars to be announced today for this year's Love Island, heading off to Mallorca in the hopes of finding some romance. 6 6 6 But before the show kicks off next Monday, The Sun can reveal that he already has a connection to a successful past contestant. Dejon's father, Gifton Noel-Williams, at one point was a professional footballer signed to Watford from 1996 to 2003. During this time, Gifton was teammates with Micah Hyde, the father of Love Island 2023 finalist, Tyrique. Tyrique found love in the villa with Ella Thomas, eventually placing third and staying with Ella for a year before their split. Gifton and Micah played alongside each other throughout their respective time at Watford, being shown as solid pals on the pitch. Tyrique and Dejon are also the same age and have played football like their dads. As childhood friends, Dejon now trains Tyrique, with the pair sharing gym videos together on Instagram. Dejon is open about his famous dad, saying ahead of entering the villa: "I've met all kinds of famous people through him. "When I was younger it was weird because he was just my dad, but we'd go to a game and fans were asking for photos. " He says he's looking for a girl in the villa who "is beautiful on the inside and out, looks after themselves and is healthy". Ten Years of Love Island Maya Jama will be back to welcome the new gang into the villa for the ultimate summer of love. The Sun revealed exclusive photos of the new-look Majorcan villa, which promises to deliver some of the show's biggest twists yet. Dejon is not the only islander with a famous connection, with fellow star Tommy Bradley revealing he has a famous boxing brother, Jamie, who trained with Anthony Joshua. Love Island starts Monday at 9pm on ITV, ITV2 and ITVX. 6 6 6

Who is Kyle Ashman? Love Island star sensationally axed over machete arrest

LOVE Island star Kyle Ashman was sensationally axed from the show last night over a machete attack. ITV chiefs scrapped the 23-year-old from the line up, plunging the show into chaos ahead of Monday's launch. 3 3 Eyebrows were raised after the cast member was removed from the show at the final hour. Unlike most of Love Island's line-ups, Kyle wasn't going into the villa with a social media packed with model shots. He has just one snap online, showing off his rippling six-pack as he poses on a rooftop. The mysterious 23-year-old water operative, from Stafford, previously described his flirting style as traditional and laid-back. He said: "I just go with it, find something to compliment a girl on and go from there." The chopped contestant said he was looking for "someone that's fun, confident and just themselves". Not much else is known about Kyle's private life. His flight back home from Majorca came after masked thugs stormed a wake in Stafford and hacked at a dad with a blade in February. Ashman, 23, was one of two quizzed but released with no further action. Sources said the channel was unaware of the incident and he was not flagged as part of contestant checks. The victim, 38, nearly lost his arm. He was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment and kept in for around two weeks. Another mourner was glassed, one struck with a metal pole, and two people run over by a car during 15 minutes of terror at a social club in Stafford. Ashman, who lives in the town, was one of two men to be nicked on suspicion of affray and bailed. Police confirmed yesterday that after the matter had been investigated the pair were released with no further action only last month. A source said: 'This was a horrific attack which could have been even worse. 'Ashman may have signed up to one of the biggest shows on TV with this hanging over his head.' It is not suggested that Ashman, whose job involves laying and repairing water pipes, was involved in the attack. Last night he insisted he was not a violent person. Confirming his show exit, an ITV spokesman said: 'For personal reasons, Kyle will not be entering the Love Island Villa as planned.' The mass brawl broke out at The White Eagle Club on February 28. Sources said three balaclava-clad thugs armed with machetes and metal poles stormed the venue and attacked the dad over an alleged £3,000 debt. They attacked him with a blade and left him with a deep gash on his arm — with witnesses wrapping towels over it to stem the bleed. Pals say he has suffered tendon damage and is unable to drive due to his injuries. Witnesses said the mob made off in a white Vauxhall Astra waiting outside. Around 70 mourners, some elderly and some children, had gathered to pay their respects to local Stanley Reid. Our source continued: 'This seemed to be a targeted attack — they knew who they were looking for and where he was. "People wrapped a towel around the man's injury while waiting for emergency services. "Children were taken into a room and locked in there to keep them away from the violence. 'People were screaming and crying in fear. They had gathered to pay final farewells to a man who was really well-respected within the local community. 'They could have killed someone that night. They are nothing but scumbags. They ruined what was a lovely send-off for a good person.' Staffordshire Police said yesterday: 'We were called to a social club on Riverway, Stafford, at 7.40pm on Friday, February 28 following reports that someone had been glassed outside and a fight was taking place. Some of the men involved were wearing masks and were carrying weapons. 'Two men went to hospital after suffering injuries at the scene. Both have since been discharged. 'A man and a woman suffered minor injuries at the scene but did not want any medical treatment. 'Officers have reviewed CCTV footage and have been actively carrying out enquiries to find out more about what happened. 'A 22-year-old man, from Stafford, was arrested on suspicion of wounding and affray. "Another man, also 22 and from Stafford, was arrested on suspicion of affray. 'Both were questioned in custody and bailed with conditions while our enquiries continue.' A force spokeswoman later confirmed that both suspects had been released with no further action last month. Ashman said last night: 'I fully co-operated with this police investigation and made it very clear that I had no involvement in this incident. 'I am not a violent person and any suggestion otherwise is a mischaracterisation.' A show source said: 'ITV were entirely unaware of Kyle's past and, as he was not charged, it was not flagged as part of Love Island's stringent DBS checks. 'It's only right he can now return home to the UK to share his side of the story and therefore bosses took the decision that it was best for him not to enter the villa.' Love Island host Maya Jama will kick off the brand new series on Monday, June 9. 3

Jodie Marsh weeps in court after being told she can keep lemurs at her animal sanctuary

TV personality Jodie Marsh wept in court yesterday after she was told she can keep lemurs at her animal sanctuary. She had appealed against a council's decision to refuse her application for a wild animal licence. 2 Concerns had been raised about her taking a meerkat to the pub. Former glamour model Marsh, 46, said trolls were behind much of the criticism of her sanctuary in Lindsell, Essex. At a previous hearing, clips of screeching zoo lemurs were played to Chelmsford magistrates' court. But Judge Christopher Williams dismissed the council's argument about the animals' noise. He said Marsh was passionate about the care and treatment of the animals under her supervision. The judge added: 'The decision by Uttlesford District Council was wrong and continues to be wrong. I allow the appeal.' The former Page 3 girl has traded her hard-partying lifestyle for hands-on work at her own animal sanctuary in Essex. In a recent interview with The Sun, Jodie referred to herself as a farm girl and a "mess". In a further self-deprecating comment, she added that she was "fat but happier than ever". Despite her contentment, she lives with "anxiety/depression, aches and pains" and is using CBD oil to improve her daily wellbeing. Jodie Marsh gives health update after saying she's 'fat but happier than ever' now she's quit glamour modelling The model-turned-bodybuilder- who put her huge country pile on the market last year - said: "You might recognise me as someone that used to be glamorous, sexy, a bodybuilder and everything else, but now I'm just a farm girl and I look a mess." 2
