English ‘Garden town by sea' with much quieter beach than nearby seaside resort
A POPULAR seaside resort dubbed 'the Garden Town by the Sea' is a great spot to go if you want to avoid the crowds this summer.
St Anne's in Lancashire is known for being less busy than its neighbour Blackpool.

It was created as a 'garden town by the sea' in the 1870s, according to St Anne's Town Council.
One of the most-known spots in St Anne's is Ashton Gardens - a 10 acre park with a variety of different plants, trees and flowers.
It sits in the town centre park and is not far from the seafront too.
In the town centre, visitors will find many shops, with lots of unique retailers.
One of the town's loved destinations has also recently had an upgrade.
The Island Cinemas were recently refurbished and now feature four comfortable cinema theatres showing the latest releases.
St Anne's Pier is one of the main landmarks in the town and dates back to 1885.
The pier has a number of cafes and shops and amusements, including children's rides.
Architecturally, it was built in cast iron with a wooden deck and includes shelters and pavilions in cast iron, wood and glass - a typical style of the Victorian period.
Unsurprisingly, the number one thing to do in St Anne's - according to Tripadvisor - is head to the beach.
The pretty UK beach named the best in the country
One recent visitor said: "[W]hat a nice clean pier, [with] plenty of machines for young and old, the staff are friendly and helpful and right at the end, what lovely views [with] plenty of seating.
"One of the best I've been on in a long time."
The beach features a long stretching promenade, with views across the ocean.
There are a number of sand dunes and games of bowls and mini golf, too.
For those wanting to enjoy the beach, they can hire a beach hut for the day.
All of the beach huts have an electrical supply, with a kitchen, fresh water, crockery, and a folding table.
For little ones, there is also an outdoor water play area with water jets and fountains.

In April, Fyde Council also revealed plans for two regeneration project, which focus on improving accessibility, connectivity and the visitor experience in St Anne's.
The projects include a transformation of £1.5million Garden Street, to create a pedestrian link between Ashton Gardens and St Anne Square.
According to Lancashire Business View, councillor Karen Buckley, leader of Fylde Council, said: "By transforming Garden Street into an inviting gateway, we are supporting local businesses and creating spaces that encourage people to explore and enjoy everything our town has to offer."
Notably, St Anne's neighbours the very famous seaside town resort of Blackpool - which is visited by millions of people each year.
For a quieter alternative, that still has things to do and a stunning beach, St Anne's is a great option.
Three UK beaches were also named the best in Europe by Tripadvisor this year.
Plus, the white sand beach in the UK that is so beautiful that it gets mistaken for Thailand.

Love Island fans predict the boys will 'go feral' in Casa Amor as chaos continues in the ITV villa: 'This is how they're acting after just one week!'
Love Island fans are predicting the boys will 'crash out' and 'go feral' in Casa Amor. The 2025 series only began on June 9, but it's already delivered explosive drama, from fiery arguments to steamy nights together. Tuesday night's episode saw talk of threesomes and the second couple heading for alone time in the hideaway. Despite it still being early days in the villa, viewers are all saying the same thing - Casa Amor is going to be chaos. Taking to X, formerly Twitter, they penned: 'I can already see who's going to crash out during casa amor. 'These boys will be FERAL in casa amor,' The ITV show kicked off on June 9 and the 2025 cast has already delivered some huge drama full of bust ups and make ups 'The mess this villa is going to be in when Casa Amor comes back,' 'The state of the villa casa amor is going to be incredible,' 'Just imagine what the casa amor episodes are gonna give,' 'IDK i feel like conor will be the 'respectful' boy until we hit casa amor.' It comes fans were left in shock during Monday's show when 'hypocritical' Harry confessed to having an orgy with an entire women's football team. Viewers saw the return of the Got The Receipts challenge that sees contestants slide down a conveyor belt, swipe their card and pick up a receipt, which reveals a fact about an Islander of the opposite sex. They then have to decide who they think the fact is about and kiss their chosen person, before finding out if they got it right. One receipt read: 'This boy has had an orgy with an entire women's football team.' Despite it still being early days in the villa, fans are all saying the same thing as Casa Amor looms The culprit was revealed to be Harry, with the girls exclaiming: 'It's Harry! I'm not sure we should be clapping for that.' Viewers at home were equally as shocked at the confession and slammed his 'double standards' on X. They shared: 'Harry is just a big gigantic red flag!!!'; 'And if I say Harry made that up because I can't see 11 women sleeping with him'; 'Harry is such a hypocrite?? Judging Helena for being a 'party girl' yet he has had an orgy with an entire football team?? What else is harry hiding? He is 10x worse yet degrading Helena?? The men this year are horrible'; ''The whole women's team' ok Harry someone's telling fibs'; 'Harry's acting like this and he's…thirty?'; 'Love Island just shows the double standards women face on a daily basis. Harry was judging Helena for being a bit freaky meanwhile he's slept with a whole football team.' The challenge took a disastrous turn as the boys cooked up an outrageous game plan which instantly backfired. Ben thought that Helena was the girl that was caught with handcuffs in her case while travelling, and Conor though that Toni picked up the phone while getting down and dirty because of a job. However, three of the boys decided to play their own game within the game. The rest of the group had no idea that Harry, Dejon, and Shea had got together and agreed that they would lock lips with the girl they fancied, rather than who they though the fact was about. But later on in the episode their secret plan was revealed after Tommy pointed out that they all kissed someone that they were attracted to. Harry told him: 'We were all like, boys lets just forget the question and just say who you wanna kiss - so Shea was like I wanna kiss Megan, when he read it out, me and D said, 'That's Megan!'' Tommy replied: 'Oh my God, f****ng hell! What do you think will happen tonight then? That will all come out?' The landscape gardener then decided to share the information with his girl Megan. She confessed: 'We f***ing knew it!' Tommy continued: 'Shea said, 'When it's my turn say Megan' - I think that's out of order. I don't like confrontation, but I will stand up for what's right.' Fern Britton: ‘There were so many secrets when I was growing up'
Fern Britton is best known for her years on daytime television, but over the past decade she's built a quieter career as a novelist down in Cornwall. In her latest book, A Cornish Legacy, Britton draws on her life to explore themes of divorce, inheritance and the emotional weight of old houses. Advertisement 'It started with this idea of a house – not a particular one,' Britton says, 'but that kind of romantic, magical mystery stuff of Cornwall. You know, where the air is a thin veil to the next world.' It's an atmospheric setting, but it also lets her dig into themes of loss, identity and starting again, drawn in part from her own life and observations of changing rural communities. Fern Britton lives and writes in North Cornwall (Fern Britton/PA) 'Friendship is everything,' she says. 'Nobody has a lot of friends – that's silly – but I've got maybe about seven or eight really good women. They're just like those best naughty friends you had at school.' Britton is speaking from Cornwall, where she's lived full-time for the past few years – though her connection to the place goes much further back. 'We always came down here – my mum, my sister, my grandmother […] it was our family nucleus,' she says. 'That magic in me – it was there from then. When I was old enough to know that Cornwall wasn't just a place for holidays, I was determined to live here.' Advertisement It's this enduring attachment that underpins much of her writing. Her latest novel centres on Delia, a woman who unexpectedly inherits a faded estate in the county. But, as with most of Britton's fiction, the deeper story lies in the emotional undertones of complex relationships and the people we choose to save – and be saved by. 'I've been sitting in my house in Cornwall doing it up over the last few years,' she says. 'Every day a little something more happens, and you think, yes, it's starting to feel like a proper home now. And that was the same for Delia. All she did was put one foot after another and put her head down. 'That is also me. That is what I've done.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Fern Britton (@fernbritton) There are shades of autobiography throughout, although Britton is careful to point out that she writes fiction. Still, she doesn't shy away from drawing on personal experience – including romantic misadventures and family revelations that arrived far later in life than expected. Advertisement 'There were so many secrets when I was growing up,' she says. 'For instance, I never grew up with my father and didn't know what had happened. He told me when I was in my 50s that he'd left my mum and sister, but on a visit home, he jumped back into bed with my mum. By the time he was finished and gone, I was conceived.' That experience – of realising an entire branch of her family tree had been quietly buried – still stays with her. 'Everybody in the family must have known what happened, but nobody told me.' It wasn't the only shock. 'My mum and my dad divorced when I was very young, and she focused all her energy on me,' Britton says. 'And also my grandmother – she had a child out of wedlock in 1914. We never knew. Then, one day, when I was working in TV down here, I got a letter from a man saying he was my mum's half-brother. He was the boy my grandmother had to give away.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Fern Britton (@fernbritton) Britton now feels a responsibility to be totally open with her own children. 'My children – I have got no surprises for them, nothing,' she says. 'I've probably told them too much!' Advertisement If family history is one kind of inheritance, then home – or the loss of it – is another. Britton recalls arriving in Cornwall for work in the early 1980s and being able to buy a small house for £15,000 with a 100% mortgage. 'That was the beginning,' she says. 'But now it's all got so high in price. When Covid started, it all went mad, and now those houses are going back on the market for too much money, and no one can afford them.' She's noticed the change in tone too – a tension between locals and second-home owners, especially as properties sit empty through the winter. But for Britton, Cornwall isn't a bolt-hole. 'People often say, 'Oh, you must be back in London now'. And I say, 'No, I'm in Cornwall all the time.' And when you're on your own on a beach in the middle of February, and it's a beautiful, bright day, you just think – wow – the others are missing this.' Advertisement View this post on Instagram A post shared by Fern Britton (@fernbritton) Romantic complications also surface in Britton's novel, particularly through Delia, who inherits the house from her ex-husband. 'It was a kind of helpful device, really,' Britton says. 'Generally, when people are looking to save themselves, they go and save somebody else […] and together, you save each other.' Her perspective on relationships has naturally changed over time, particularly through watching her daughters – who are now in the 20s – navigate dating in the modern world. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Fern Britton (@fernbritton) 'In the Seventies and Eighties, people just asked you out, there wasn't more thought put into it,' she says. 'But now, this narcissistic personality has actually been addressed and given a name, given an understanding.' She recalls a friend's toxic relationship: 'He was so clever – making her feel adored, and then picking fights, and it was all her fault. But it wasn't. I think that's very interesting.' There's no big message of A Cornish Legacy, no moral neatly tied up, but in the background, there's a quiet, persistent thread: people muddling through, weathering heartbreak and making peace with the past – or at least trying to. For Britton, that thread runs close to the bone. 'Writing lets me sit quietly with all the noise,' she says, 'and Cornwall – well, it's just the bit of me that feels like home.'
