Conjuring the Past and Future of Black Music in ‘Sinners'
In 'Anatomy of a Scene,' we ask directors to reveal the secrets that go into making key scenes in their movies. See new episodes in the series on Fridays. You can also watch our collection of more than 150 videos on YouTube and subscribe to our YouTube channel.
Viewers might not expect to see a DJ at a turntable in Ryan Coogler's 1930s-set horror movie 'Sinners,' but in this sequence, the history and future of music collide.
This sequence takes place in a juke joint opened by the twins Smoke and Stack (both played by Michael B. Jordan). Playing for the crowd is Sammie Moore (Miles Caton), performing a song that was written by Raphael Saadiq and the film's composer, Ludwig Goransson.
'Rafael is from Oakland, kind of a local legend where I'm from,' Coogler said, narrating the moment.
The scene starts with Caton's impressive vocals, while cutting to shots of both Smoke and Stack, as well as other characters in the sequence. 'We wanted to use Michael Shawver's editing skills to establish where everybody is and what their stakes are,' Coogler said.
Once all is laid out, the scene flashes back to a conversation between Sammie and another musician, Delta Slim (Delroy Lindo), who explains Sammie's skill for the blues and the responsibility that comes with his talent.
'Blues, it wasn't forced on us like that religion,' Delta says. 'No, son. We brought this with us from home. It's magic, what we do. It's sacred and big.'
As the scene returns to the juke joint, we hear a voice-over from Annie (Wunmi Mosaku), a conjure woman. She says that some musicians have the gift to make music so powerful, it can conjure spirits from the past and the future. At this point, in an ambitious tracking shot, various eras of musicians appear in the frame, including an electric guitarist and the D.J. at the turntable.
'We wanted to do it in a fluid, continuous take,' Coogler said. New music elements continue to be introduced along with new forms of dance.
'Aakomon Jones, our choreographer, is changing choreography ever so slightly so that folks still feel like they're in their time, but also outside of it as we get more and more heightened in this moment,' Coogler said.

Josh Allen, Hailee Steinfeld share wedding photos: 4 things we learned about nuptials
Josh Allen, Hailee Steinfeld share wedding photos: 4 things we learned about nuptials Show Caption Hide Caption Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen and Hailee Steinfeld marry in California Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen and acclaimed actress Hailee Steinfeld officially married one another in California. unbranded - Sport Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen showed up to training camp with a new ring on his ringer — not a Super Bowl ring, but a wedding band following his nuptials to 'Sinners' actress Hailee Steinfeld on May 31. "Got some hardware now, so good to go," Allen said at the Bills' mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. The couple, who went Instagram official in July 2024 after a year of speculation, is notoriously private about their relationship, so not many details about their Santa Barbara, California wedding have been shared, until now. Steinfeld offered fans an inside look into their big day by sharing memories and photos they "can't stop thinking about" in the latest issue of her "Beau Society" newsletter. "As you know, I'm always somewhere in between wanting to share every detail and wanting to keep them close to my heart," Steinfeld wrote on Friday. "But Beau Society felt like the right place to share some of the love and magic that made up our wedding weekend." Here are four things we learned about Allen and Steinfeld's wedding: Breakfast for two with pancakes on the menu The bride and groom are traditionally separated from each other ahead of the wedding, but Allen and Steinfeld moved the goalposts and opted for an intimate breakfast with just the two of them. "On the morning of our wedding, Josh and I met for breakfast just before 7," Steinfeld wrote. "I'm so glad we did that. I don't think I could've gone the whole day without seeing him! We had a little spread, which included my favorite lemon ricotta pancakes." Josh Allen 'stunned' by Steinfeld's wedding dress Steinfeld walked down the aisle in a strapless ivory wedding dress designed and tailored by Tamara Ralph, which was "easily the most perfect gown I've ever put on my body," she said. Steinfeld accessorized her gown with a pair of long, sheer gloves, Mikimoto earrings and a sleek bun adorned with a French Chantilly lace veil. Steinfeld said she "stunned (Allen) when I got to the altar," but noted that her wedding day look almost didn't happen. "We were on the tightest timeline. Six weeks before the wedding, my mom and I flew to Paris straight from the 'Sinners' premiere in London for the fitting," she revealed. "I really had to lean into the whole 'trust the process' thing and thank God for Rob, Mariel, Tamara, and her team for pulling it all together in time. On our wedding day, when I put on this dress, I actually lost my breath. I've never felt more like myselfand more beautiful." Allen donned a Tom Ford tuxedo that he paired with a pleated shirt and black cufflinks. "Josh looked like the man of every dream I've ever had," Steinfeld gushed. As for the guests? Steinfeld said the dress code was "all-black black tie" to seamlessly match their "very classic and bold" theme. The wedding was also "a no-phone wedding," which was "one of the best decisions we made." They walked down the aisle to this classic song Steinfeld ditched a wedding bouquet and instead walked down the aisle with one single crystal rose. She was accompanied by her father Peter Steinfeld, which she called an emotional moment. "I'm very proud of us. It became a running joke that we'd be crying too hard to walk straight," she said. "I just remember the walkup looked like a façade. Josh was standing under this huge structure; it was the most surreal thing I'd ever seen." After Allen and Steinfeld said 'I do,' the newlyweds exited the altar to Stevie Wonder's 'Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours)." They also got a round of applause, from the sky that is: "The coolest thing happened after we got married: We walked off the aisle ... and it started thundering. No rain, just thunder and lightning. Magical.' The bridal party jumped into the pool Allen and Steinfeld hosted an underground after-party to comply with sound ordinances in the area. The party was decked out with a cigar bar, Angel Margarita, grilled cheese sandwiches and chocolate chip cookies served with shot glasses of milk. The party didn't stop until around 3 a.m. and they ended it with a bang. The bridal party jumped into the pool (except Steinfeld, who was dressed in feathers) in their tuxedos and dresses. Hailee Steinfeld Says Her Wedding Dress 'Stunned' New Husband Josh Allen as She Shares Details on Her 3 Bridal Looks
Hailee Steinfeld has shared new details on the three bridal looks she wore for her May 31 wedding to Josh Allen In the Wedding Issue of her Beau Society newsletter, the actress talked about her Tamara Ralph ceremony dress, which "stunned" her husband "I've never felt more like myself and more beautiful," she wroteHailee Steinfeld's wedding wardrobe was a dream. Not many details of the actress' wedding to NHL player Josh Allen have been revealed since the two said "I do" on May 31 — until now. On June 13, Steinfeld released the Wedding Issue of her Beau Society newsletter in which she detailed the romantic happenings at her and Allen's nuptials in Santa Barbara, Calif. In the post, the Sinners star, 28, also wrote about her three bridal looks, including the ceremony gown that took her husband's breath away. "Okay, Josh says we have to talk about my dress now because I 'stunned' him when I got to the altar," wrote Steinfeld, adding of the look: "It's easily the most perfect gown I've ever put on my body." Steinfeld, who was styled by Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn, walked down the aisle in a tailored Tamara Ralph strapless gown, which featured a sculpted neckline and a circular train. She accessorized with a French Chantilly lace veil, Mikimoto pearl earrings and opera gloves "so delicate you can actually see my nail shape through the fabric (shout out Tom Bachik [Steinfeld's nail artist]). Although she pulled off the elegant design effortlessly, Steinfeld revealed that she and the team were on the "tightest timeline" when designing the dress. "Six weeks before the wedding, my mom and I flew to Paris straight from the Sinners premiere in London for the fitting. I really had to lean into the whole 'trust the process' thing and thank God for Rob, Mariel, Tamara, and her team for pulling it all together in time." However, the end result couldn't be more perfect. "On our wedding day, when I put on this dress, I actually lost my breath. I've never felt more like myself and more beautiful," wrote Steinfeld. She also revealed that Allen, 29, wore a custom Tom Ford tuxedo. "Josh looked like the man of every dream I've ever had," she wrote. "RIP me." The dress code for the wedding ceremony was all-black black-tie, which Steinfeld felt was "very classic and bold." Tamara Ralph also dressed Steinfeld for her welcome and after parties. The opening look, which catered to the "vibrant elegance" elegance dress code, was comprised of a white sculpted gown with a bodice draped in strung beads. Complementing it were a silky blazer with statement shoulder pads and pearl drop earrings. Her finale look was fun, festive and a lot more embellished with its sparkly adornments, feather trimming and low-cut back. She also changed into glittery ankle-strap stilettos to match the vibe. By the end of the celebrations (the night capped at 3 a.m.), all of the couple's friends jumped in a pool in their dresses and tuxes, shared Steinfeld, who joked that she didn't partake because of all the feathers. Yet, each look was "perfect" for their respective occasions, she added. Further down in the newsletter, Steinfeld wrote about how her and Allen's honeymoon plans went following their "perfect" wedding weekend. "The next day, Josh and I ran off into the sunset to our honeymoon (more on that later?). Now we're back, and it's been a whole 13 days of being married, and we'll be staying on this high forever!" Allen has mostly kept mum about newlywed life, but he did make a rare comment on their relationship not long after they tied the knot. When asked about his accomplishments at a June 10 press conference, the Buffalo Bills quarterback said his most memorable milestone has been "none other than marrying my best friend.' 'She makes everything easier. I don't really focus on the other stuff, that was the most important decision I'll make in my life, and I made the right one,' he told reporters, per TMZ Steinfeld and Allen were first linked in May 2023 and debuted their relationship on Instagram in July 2024. They announced their engagement back in November. Read the original article on People
