Asked when exactly it was established, George Moutsatsos of Proto Bakery said: 'We are not sure of when Proto was established but it has been around for more than 80 years and in the ownership of the Moutsatsos family. My grandfather and my father took over in the early sixties when my grandfather's older brother passed away.'

'With the help of a few friends, it took us about four months to revamp and except for the electrical and cold room issues, we did everything ourselves,' said a proud Moutsatsos.
Closing the bakery was a difficult decision for Proto management, but they took it to do the much-needed renovations and to change the focus of the business, to also concentrate on the shop and ensure customers witness its growth.
'Proto has long been a part of Alberton and our customers are like family, our opening day was like a huge family gathering,' recalled Moutsatsos.
'We would like to thank everyone for the overwhelming and emotional response and positive feedback since our reopening. Some of our customers pop in just to say 'hello'. We intend to provide our customers with the best possible experience,' added Moutsatsos.
Proto opens its doors at 06:00 to 18:00 from Monday to Friday, and 06:30 to 14:00 on Saturdays.

SARS kicks off 2025 tax filing season
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has officially declared the opening of the 2025 tax filing season, with major updates aimed at simplifying the process for millions of South African taxpayers. The filing season will run from July 7 up until October 20 for non-provisional individuals, while provisional taxpayers and trusts will have until January 19, 2026 to submit their tax returns. This year, SARS is making compliance by kicking off the season with an auto-assessment initiative, designed to streamline returns for taxpayers. Also read: Urgent community support needed to complete classroom project at New Jerusalem Children's Home ''In line with our strategic objective to make it easy for taxpayers to comply, we have identified a large segment of non-provisional and provisional taxpayers who receive income from one or more sources, from formal and other forms of employment, and whose tax affairs are not complicated. They've been selected to be automatically assessed,' said SARS in a statement. Between July 7 and 20, selected taxpayers will receive SMSes and emails notifying them that they've been automatically assessed. If SARS's pre-calculated return looks right then the taxpayer does not have to do anything. However, taxpayers are advised to file a revised return if they believe that SARS has not accurately calculated their return. This can be done through SARS eFiling or the SARS MobiApp by October 20. This includes taxpayers with multiple income streams, foreign income, or deductions not reflected in SARS's third-party data. SARS emphasised the importance of early preparation. 'We urge all taxpayers to prepare their documentation early to check their assessments to avoid last-minute delays for those that must submit an income return.' The agency has also urged taxpayers to ensure that their banking and security contact details are accurate and up to date. 'But if you need to update them, make sure your email and cellphone number are correct on eFiling first.' Those who have not been contacted by SARS are still expected to file manually from July 21. Sassa ‘fraudsters' could face charges if they don't update income status
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) urged beneficiaries who no longer qualify for social grants but continue to receive payments to update their income status. It warned that failure to do so might lead to criminal charges being pursued against those beneficiaries. This follows a joint investigation with credit bureaus revealing that about 210 000 individuals have been fraudulently receiving the grant despite changes in their income status. Read more: Sassa delays June payments over undisclosed income Sassa spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi said the agency discovered that some beneficiaries failed to disclose alternative incomes, with some using multiple bank accounts to separate employment earnings from grant funds. Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, he urged beneficiaries who are still receiving the grants despite a change in their income to voluntarily visit their nearest Sassa office to update their income status. He noted that beneficiaries have been given two weeks [starting from June 2] to present themselves at their nearest Sassa office with the necessary documentation. 'They have to ask the Sasssa official to update their status.' Also read: Sassa announces June grant payment days He further warned that failure to comply could lead to criminal charges being pursued against beneficiaries. 'We don't want to go to that level; that is why we are appealing to them to do the right thing.' He revealed that some beneficiaries were identified as public servants. 'When it's a public servant, we have a Personnel and Salary System number, so we can trace them easily. We can block the grant and recover government resources given fraudulently.' Sassa hopes to avoid taking legal action but will assess compliance after the two-week deadline. 'We will evaluate the response rate and commitments made. A report from our fraud management unit will guide the next steps.' Follow us on our Whatsapp channel, Facebook, X, Instagram, and TikTok for the latest updates and inspiration! Have a story idea?
