Asked when exactly it was established, George Moutsatsos of Proto Bakery said: 'We are not sure of when Proto was established but it has been around for more than 80 years and in the ownership of the Moutsatsos family. My grandfather and my father took over in the early sixties when my grandfather's older brother passed away.'
The bakeshop employs eight permanent staff members.

'With the help of a few friends, it took us about four months to revamp and except for the electrical and cold room issues, we did everything ourselves,' said a proud Moutsatsos.
Closing the bakery was a difficult decision for Proto management, but they took it to do the much-needed renovations and to change the focus of the business, to also concentrate on the shop and ensure customers witness its growth.
'Proto has long been a part of Alberton and our customers are like family, our opening day was like a huge family gathering,' recalled Moutsatsos.
'We would like to thank everyone for the overwhelming and emotional response and positive feedback since our reopening. Some of our customers pop in just to say 'hello'. We intend to provide our customers with the best possible experience,' added Moutsatsos.
Proto opens its doors at 06:00 to 18:00 from Monday to Friday, and 06:30 to 14:00 on Saturdays.

Cape Town's unique R1.2 billion 'living building' gets cancelled

Plans for Africa's first biophilic building, The Fynbos, in Bree Street, Cape Town has sadly been cancelled. The R1.2 billion Cape Town development was positioned to be a 24-story apartment building with a host of luxury amenities, such as a lap pool, a plant-based restaurant, a botanical bar, and a rooftop sunset terrace – all with one-of-a-kind natural elements. Once completed, the 'living building' would have also had a unique 1 200-square-metre vertical garden, made up of indigenous trees and plants, intended to create a living, breathing facade in the city, BusinessTech reports . According to BusinessTech , in May 2025, buyers were informed that development of the The Fynbos would not go ahead as initially planned. Lurra Capital, the developer, revealed that shifting market conditions and a change in strategic direction were the main reasons for the cancellation. The building project has now been handed over to another property developer, Tricolt, who plans to reimagine the building from the ground up. Elon Musk admits Donald Trump X tirade 'went too far'

Elon Musk, the world's richest person and Donald Trump's former advisor, said on Wednesday he regretted some of his recent criticisms of the US president, after the pair's public falling-out last week. 'I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far,' Musk wrote on his social media platform X. Musk's expression of regret came just days after Trump threatened the tech billionaire with 'serious consequences' if he sought to punish Republicans who vote for a controversial spending bill. Their blistering break-up – largely carried out on social media before a riveted public on Thursday last week – was ignited by Musk's harsh criticism of Trump's so-called 'big, beautiful' spending bill, which is currently before Congress. Some lawmakers who were against the bill had called on Musk – one of the Republican Party's biggest financial backers in last year's presidential election – to fund primary challenges against Republicans who voted for the legislation. 'He'll have to pay very serious consequences if he does that,' Trump, who also branded Musk 'disrespectful,' told NBC News on Saturday, without specifying what those consequences would be. The far-too-early petrol price forecast for July looks GOOD

The very early data suggests that more good news lies ahead for South Africa's motorists in July 2025. Vehicle owners in South Africa saw a sizeable decrease in the cost of both petrol and diesel last week. Should the rand continue to strengthen against the dollar and the brent crude oil price not rise above its current levels, there could well be more reason to cheer in three weeks' time. Below, the latest projections as received by The South African website from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), effective Tuesday, 10 June. FUEL PRICE CHANGE Petrol 93 decrease of 19 cents Petrol 95 decrease of 16 cents Diesel 0.05% decrease of 25 cents Diesel 0.005% decrease of 24 cents Illuminating Paraffin decrease of 35 cents If the market conditions were to remain consistent for the remainder of the month – an unlikely scenario with the rand/dollar exchange rate fluctuating and the oil price ever changing – a decrease of 19 cents is expected for petrol 93 octane motorists and a decrease of 16 cents for 95 users. Meanwhile, diesel motorists would see something between a 24 and 25 cents per litre decrease. Finally, illuminating paraffin is expected to drop by 35 cents in price. FUEL PRICE IN SOUTH AFRICA IMPACTED BY TWO MAIN FACTORS: 1. The international price of petroleum products, driven mainly by oil prices 2. The rand/dollar exchange rate used in the purchase of these products Oil price At the time of publishing the brent crude oil price is $66.95 a barrel. Exchange rate At the time of publishing the rand/dollar exchange rate is R17.71/$. The final overall price changes for both petrol and diesel will be confirmed early next month with the new prices taking effect at midnight on Tuesday, 1 July 2025. Go easy on the accelerator until then, Mzansi. INLAND June Petrol 93 R21.24 Petrol 95 R21.35 Diesel 0.05% R18.53 Diesel 0.005% R18.57 Illuminating Paraffin R12.49 COASTAL June Petrol 93 R20.45 Petrol 95 R20.56 Diesel 0.05% R17.70 Diesel 0.005% R17.81 Illuminating Paraffin R11.47 Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 Subscribe to The South African website's newsletters and follow us on WhatsApp, Facebook, X and Bluesky for the latest news.
