Asked when exactly it was established, George Moutsatsos of Proto Bakery said: 'We are not sure of when Proto was established but it has been around for more than 80 years and in the ownership of the Moutsatsos family. My grandfather and my father took over in the early sixties when my grandfather's older brother passed away.'
The bakeshop employs eight permanent staff members.

'With the help of a few friends, it took us about four months to revamp and except for the electrical and cold room issues, we did everything ourselves,' said a proud Moutsatsos.
Closing the bakery was a difficult decision for Proto management, but they took it to do the much-needed renovations and to change the focus of the business, to also concentrate on the shop and ensure customers witness its growth.
'Proto has long been a part of Alberton and our customers are like family, our opening day was like a huge family gathering,' recalled Moutsatsos.
'We would like to thank everyone for the overwhelming and emotional response and positive feedback since our reopening. Some of our customers pop in just to say 'hello'. We intend to provide our customers with the best possible experience,' added Moutsatsos.
Proto opens its doors at 06:00 to 18:00 from Monday to Friday, and 06:30 to 14:00 on Saturdays.

Sassa ‘fraudsters' could face charges if they don't update income status
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) urged beneficiaries who no longer qualify for social grants but continue to receive payments to update their income status. It warned that failure to do so might lead to criminal charges being pursued against those beneficiaries. This follows a joint investigation with credit bureaus revealing that about 210 000 individuals have been fraudulently receiving the grant despite changes in their income status. Read more: Sassa delays June payments over undisclosed income Sassa spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi said the agency discovered that some beneficiaries failed to disclose alternative incomes, with some using multiple bank accounts to separate employment earnings from grant funds. Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, he urged beneficiaries who are still receiving the grants despite a change in their income to voluntarily visit their nearest Sassa office to update their income status. He noted that beneficiaries have been given two weeks [starting from June 2] to present themselves at their nearest Sassa office with the necessary documentation. 'They have to ask the Sasssa official to update their status.' Also read: Sassa announces June grant payment days He further warned that failure to comply could lead to criminal charges being pursued against beneficiaries. 'We don't want to go to that level; that is why we are appealing to them to do the right thing.' He revealed that some beneficiaries were identified as public servants. 'When it's a public servant, we have a Personnel and Salary System number, so we can trace them easily. We can block the grant and recover government resources given fraudulently.' Sassa hopes to avoid taking legal action but will assess compliance after the two-week deadline. 'We will evaluate the response rate and commitments made. A report from our fraud management unit will guide the next steps.' Follow us on our Whatsapp channel, Facebook, X, Instagram, and TikTok for the latest updates and inspiration! Have a story idea? The small seaside village in SA where foreigners love to live
A stunning seaside village in the Western Cape saw the highest proportion of foreign property buyers in South Africa last year. According to BusinessTech and the latest property data from Lightstone Property, Scarborough in Cape Town had over half of its homes sold to foreigners last year. The data also revealed that the Western Cape was the preferred destination for foreign property buyers in South Africa, with the province having the top 22 suburbs with the highest proportion of foreign purchasers. Scarborough is a small, picturesque seaside village which sits on the southern tip of the Cape Peninsula. The suburb forms part of the City of Cape Town metropolitan area but maintains a distinctly rural and tranquil atmosphere. The suburb is also declared a conservation village, which means strict regulations are in place to protect the natural environment. The average property price in Scarborough has greatly increased over the past decade, data has also shown, with the average price sold from R2.30 million in 2016 to R7.85 million as of 2025 – a whopping 241% increase. Foreign property buyers are also flocking to Chapmans Peak, Bakoven, De Waterkant, and Cape Town Centre, BusinessTech has reported.
