13 Japanese Detained By Malaysian Authorities Over Fraud; Accused of Impersonating Japan Police to Fool Victims

BANGKOK — Thirteen Japanese nationals were detained in May by Malaysian police during raids on two facilities operated by fraudsters in Kuala Lumpur and elsewhere, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned.
According to Malaysian police, a total of 19 suspects, including Japanese and Chinese nationals, were detained in the raids.
The suspects allegedly pretended to be officers with the Osaka prefectural police, sending online messages to targets in Japan and getting them to transfer cash. They are believed to have used this method and other similar scams for about two months.
Many personal computers and mobile phones were found in the raids, local police said, as were clothes resembling the uniforms of Japanese police officers and script-like documents.
There has been a series of cases in Southeast Asia in which Japanese and other foreign nationals have been detained by local police during raids on bases for fraudsters.
In eastern Myanmar bordering Thailand, a large number of foreigners, including Japanese, were found to have participated in scams. In Poipet in northwestern Cambodia, 29 Japanese were detained late last month.

Thirteen victims died at the scene near the town of Gerik, on the busy East-West Highway near the Thai border, while two died in hospital. Images from the scene taken by the fire and rescue department showed a green bus overturned on its right side with a smashed rear end cover, while the red minivan had slid into a ditch, with its windows blown out. "Some victims managed to get out on their own, some victims were thrown out while others were still (trapped) in the bus," the Perak state disaster management authority said in a statement. Rescuers had to use a hydraulic cutter to free people from the bus. The death toll included 14 students from the Sultan Idris Education University, while the last victim was a bus attendant, the emergency services said. Thirty-three others were injured, with seven in critical condition taken to hospital, it added. Most of the victims were aged between 21 and 23. They were traveling from the town of Jerteh in northeastern Malaysia when the accident happened shortly after 1 a.m. Police Chief Hisam said officers were investigating whether the crash "involved human negligence or if it was a technical issue". A witness told the New Straits Times it "was a chaotic scene with students screaming and crying for help". "They were pinned between the wreckage," the witness, identified as Razali, told the paper. Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim ordered the Higher Education Ministry to help the victim's families and said he and his wife Azizah were "deeply saddened" by the tragedy. "Heartbreaking disasters like these that are repeated often should be a lesson to all to be careful and not to rush," Anwar wrote on Facebook. "Your lives are too precious and can't be replaced," he added. Malaysia has a high rate of traffic accidents, with an average of 18 people killed on the roads each day, according to government figures. The East-West Highway, which connects the two seaboards of the Malaysian peninsula, is plagued by accidents, with frequent collisions between animals and vehicles. Ohkawara Pres. Asks Tokyo Police Not to Appeal Damages Suit Ruling
Tokyo, June 9 (Jiji Press)--The president of Japanese spray-dryer maker Ohkawara Kakohki Co. on Monday asked the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department not to appeal the recent ruling by Tokyo High Court that found the MPD's investigations into the company illegal and ordered the payment of damages. The 76-year-old president, Masaaki Okawara, visited the MPD headquarters in central Tokyo, handing in documents requesting that the truth about the false accusations be revealed and that the police officers involved in the investigation be punished strictly. He was arrested by the MPD's Public Security Bureau in 2020 along with two others of the company, based in Yokohama, south of Tokyo, for allegedly exporting without permission a spray dryer that could be repurposed to weapons production in violation of the foreign exchange law. They were indicted later that year but the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office withdrew the indictments the following year, saying that doubts had arisen about whether the spray-dryer in question was among the products subject to export controls. Also on Monday, Okawara submitted to the MPD some 41,400 online signatures collected since May 29, the day after the high court ruling was handed down, calling for the ruling not be appealed. At Naha District Court on the day, the defense reiterated a plea of not guilty. The court is scheduled to hand down a ruling on June 24. During the first court hearing of his trial on June 2, Clayton claimed he was innocent, saying that he did not choke or injure the woman and that he did nothing that would raise suspicion. In their closing arguments on Monday, prosecutors said that the woman's testimony was trustworthy because it was consistent with objective evidence, and criticized Clayton's "egoistic" motive, which was "just to satisfy his sexual desire."
