Here we go again: South Florida columnist calls out Connor McDavid for second straight year

Yahoo2 days ago

During last year's Stanley Cup Final, there were some extremely interesting and dramatic storylines that played out over the course of a seven-game extravaganza.
One of the more unexpected narratives came from a longtime, well respected South Florida sports columnist named Greg Cote.

Prior to the start of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final, Cote wrote that Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid was 'overrated.'
As one might imagine, it was universally disagreed with, which didn't seem to bother Cote one bit.
In his original story, Cote wrote: 'Connor McDavid is overrated. Boom. He puts up big, impressive stats, yes. Fine. But should he really be called 'generational,' called the best player in the sport, when in nine seasons he has yet to lead his team to a Stanley Cup?'
McDavid went on to record three goals and 11 points during the Final, capping off a postseason in which he racked up 42 points and earned the Conn Smythe Trophy.

He followed that ridiculousness up with his fifth straight 100-point season (it would be his ninth straight, but he finished with 97 points after playing just 64 games in the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season.
As for this year's playoffs, McDavid has logged a more modest six goals and 26 points in 16 outings while leading his team back to the Final in two less games than it took last postseason.
Apparently, none of that has impressed Cote.
Not only did he double down on his 'overrated' take from last season, but he brought a certain South Florida sports legend into the conversation, just to further prove his point.

'Is it true some nincompoop Miami columnist referred to McDavid as 'McOverrated' in last year's Final?' Yes, I did! (Who uses the word nincompoop anymore?) And guess what? The unkind nickname is even more of a snug fit now.
'McOverrated does not mean McDavid isn't great. He is. He has won three Hart (MVP) trophies, led the league in points five times. His combo of speed and stick-handling might be unmatched.
But enough with the McJesus, next-Gretzky hyberbole. He isn't perfect. Nothing special defensively. Prone to turning the puck over. Oh, and this minor thing: NO CHAMPIONSHIPS. Zero Stanley Cups in his 10th NHL season. Tick-tock, Connor. Not sure about you Canadians, but here in the States we sort of a put a premium on winning it all. (It's why Dan Marino never really entered the greatest-QB-ever talk even though he shattered NFL passing records. Never won a Super Bowl.)'
Painful Dan Marino memories aside, do we really want to poke the bear?

2025 Stanley Cup Final Preview: Can Edmonton Keep Florida From Repeating?

Exactly eight months after the 2024–25 NHL season began with an international series in Prague, Czech Republic, the season will conclude with the Stanley Cup Final starting June 4. In a rematch of last year's final, the series pits the defending champion Florida Panthers against the Edmonton Oilers, but unlike last year, Edmonton has home-ice advantage. That advantage is one of the many storylines hovering over the series. Here are some of the others. A Rare Rematch While this is the 12th rematch in Stanley Cup Final history, many of those happened during the pre-expansion era. The 2025 Stanley Cup Final is just the second rematch over the last 40 years, following the Red Wings and Penguins meeting in 2008–09. The reigning champs are 7–4 all-time in the rematches, which obviously favors the Panthers, but another statistic favors the Oilers.

Rubio imposes visa bans over Cuba's medical missions program

Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday announced they were imposing visa bans on government officials linked to Cuba's medical missions program. File Photo by Ken Cedeno/UPI | License Photo June 4 (UPI) -- The U.S. State Department has imposed visa restrictions on an unspecified number of Central American government officials accused of being involved in Cuba's medical mission program. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the punitive measure in a statement Tuesday, describing those targeted with the visa restrictions as "officials responsible for Cuban medical mission programs that include elements of forced labor and the exploitation of Cuban workers." "These steps promote accountability for those who support and perpetuate these exploitative practices," Rubio said. "The Cuban labor export program abuses the participants, enriches the corrupt Cuban regime and deprives everyday Cubans of essential medical care that they desperately need in their homeland." According to the State Department's 2024 Trafficking in Persons Report for Cuba, medical professionals comprise 75% of Cuba's exported workforce, generating $4.9 billion of its total $7 billion in service exports in 2022. The United States, citing doctors who have escaped from the program, accuses Cuba of human trafficking and worker exploitation, stating that those deployed to some 50 countries receive little or no pay, have their passports and medical credentials confiscated and have their rights restricted abroad, while also facing repercussions if they leave the program. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Human Rights Watch said the Cuban government imposes "draconian rules" on doctors deployed abroad. The move comes after Rubio, in late February, announced that the State Department was expanding its visa restrictions policy targeting forced labor to enable the blacklisting of those linked to Cuba's labor export programs. Though Cuba has yet to respond to Tuesday's move, it lashed out at the Trump administration following February's announcement, with Havana's foreign minister, Bruno Rodriguez, said the visa restrictions were "based on falsehoods and coercion." Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar, R-Fla., said on X Tuesday that she supports Rubio's visa ban on those who benefit from Cuba's international medical program. "No nation should enrich a dictatorship by exploiting its own people," she said. "It's time to end these slave missions and stand with the Cuban people."

Cuomo flip-flops on flip-flop, supports NYC congestion pricing — after telling The Post he wanted it paused

Mayoral hopeful Andrew Cuomo brazenly flipped his flip-flop on congestion pricing – after last year penning a Post op-ed walking back his past support for the scheme. When Cuomo was asked by The New York Times in an interview Tuesday whether he supports congestion pricing now that it shows signs of success, the former governor gave a blunt response: 'Yes.' The supportive stance contrasted with Cuomo's op-ed urging leaders pump the brakes on the controversial plan – which he championed and approved as governor. He had said at the time that imposing the toll on vehicles entering Manhattan south of 60th Street would drive people into an increasingly violent subway system. 3 The op-ed suggested an analysis on the effect of a $15 toll on the city's post-pandemic recovery. 'The people of New York know this is not the time to implement congestion pricing, but where are their local leaders passing resolutions condemning the policy?' he said then. But felony assaults in the subways are 19% percent higher so far this year compared to the same point in 2024, months after Cuomo penned his opinion piece, NYPD data shows. Overall crime in the transit system is down 4.5% over the same span, according to the data. Cuomo insisted during the Times interview that his opinion on congestion pricing has never wavered. 'All I said was, let's study this before we do it in this moment, to make sure people aren't going to say, 'you know what, another reason for me to stay home,'' he said. But Cuomo's apparent flip-flop-flip quickly drew outrage from Cuomo's opponents, political insiders and even supporters of congestion pricing. 3 'He'll say anything and everything to get elected,' Mayor Eric Adams said of Cuomo's congestion pricing about-face. 'He really believes that people don't know his history.' Cuomo had muscled congestion pricing through the state Legislature in 2019, arguing at the time that only 'very rich people' can afford the 'luxury' to drive into Manhattan. After Cuomo resigned as governor in 2021 amid a sexual harassment scandal, he returned from the political wilderness in part by calling to pause congestion pricing. He argued that New Yorkers financially hit by the COVID-19 pandemic couldn't be expected to pay another charge, as well as be shunted into dangerous subways. Curtis Sliwa, the presumptive Republican nominee for mayor, however, saw Cuomo's latest about-face on congestion pricing as yet another craven political calculation. 'Andrew Cuomo isn't interested in governing, he's already scheming for the national stage,' he said. 'He's the king of flip flops, who stands for nothing, puts himself above everyone, and says whatever he thinks will help him get ahead.' Democratic operative Ken Frydman said Cuomo won't be the last politician to change his tune on congestion pricing. 'But now that he's running for mayor of New York City instead of governor of New York State, he's clearly appealing for votes from motorists in the five boroughs,' he said. Another Democratic operative was less charitable. 3 'Andrew Cuomo has no core principles, he'll say whatever it takes to claw his way back into power,' the operative said. 'He's exactly why so many people have lost faith in politics: a flip-flopping wannabe king who ran to the Hamptons when things got tough.' Danny Pearlstein, a spokesman for the pro-congestion pricing NYC Riders Alliance, argued Cuomo has a poor record as governor for mass transit. 'We need a mayor we can trust, not one who lies and falsifies history when it's convenient for him,' Pearlstein said. Cuomo told reporters just after he kicked off his campaign in March that 'preliminary data' pointed to the early success of congestion pricing goals, but added he didn't believe 'all data was in yet.' His campaign officials maintained the ex-gov's stance hasn't changed. 'Governor Cuomo passed congestion pricing in 2019 and nearly two years ago – after being held up for years in Washington – asked the reasonable question about whether we were in the right place economically in our post-pandemic recovery and whether or not drivers had enough confidence in the subways to ditch their cars, or were they just going to work remotely,' his spokeswoman Esther Jensen said. 'These were logical questions that many people were asking. As the governor said yesterday – the indicators are that the program is working.'
