Assassinated leaders Farooq and Lone believed dialogue was the best way: Mirwaiz

The Hindu21-05-2025

Hurriyat chairman and Kashmir's chief cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, said that his father, Mirwaiz Moulana Farooq, and J&K Peoples Conference founder Abdul Ghani Lone believed dialogue was the best way to solve the Kashmir conflict. He was speaking on their death anniversaries on Wednesday. Both leaders were assassinated. Farooq was shot dead on May 21, 1990, and Lone was gunned down on May 21, 2002. He said, 'Their views are once again being echoed globally as the only viable path to peace.'
'The political foresight that both these leaders exhibited, their faith in resolution of the Kashmir conflict through dialogue, which they saw as the best means to end lingering uncertainty for the people of J&K and as the catalyst for ensuring peace and stability in the region, is once again acknowledged by the world as the way forward. Hope India and Pakistan pay heed to it,' the Mirwaiz said, in a statement.
The Mirwaiz paid tributes to his late father and also remembered Khawaja Abdul Ghani Lone Sahab and the '70 innocent mourners who died in the Hawal massacre on the same date.'
Painful memories
'21st May is upon us, and painful memories are revived. Quaid-e-Kashmir to his people, Mirwaiz Molvi Mohammad Farooq was on this day taken away from them by gunmen, his distraught mourners sprayed with bullets, leaving seventy dead. Even after 35 years, the vacuum his death created is present, more keenly felt with each passing year. His guidance is deeply missed,' the Mirwaiz said.
J&K PC chief Sajad Lone spoke about the loss of his father. 'He (Mr. Lone) sacrificed his life in pursuit of his dream for peace. Those were even darker days than today. Speaking the truth often invited retribution. I remember when he died, we called him the Martyr to Peace. Never in these 23 years has the need for peace dawned on us as it has in the last thirty days,' Mr. Lone said.
'May those who killed him burn in hell, and may all those cowards who kill non-combatants, civilians, and innocent tourists burn in hell,' Mr. Lone added.
Former J&K chief minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president, Mehbooba Mufti, also paid her tributes. 'Today marks the solemn death anniversary of Mirwaiz Mohammad Farooq Sahab & Abdul Gani Lone Sahab. Two prominent Kashmiri figures known for their efforts to promote peace and dialogue in the region. Their deaths remain a tragic reminder of the heavy cost of violence in the region and the urgent need for peace and reconciliation,' she said, in a post on X.

BJP's Ravinder Raina attends Urs, meets NC's tribal leaders

In a significant development, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ravinder Raina on Sunday met National Conference tribal leaders Mian Altaf Larvi and his son Mian Mehar Ali as he visited Baba Nagri on the annual Urs of Nizam-ud-din Kiyanvi in central Kashmir's Kangan. Raina visited the shrine of the sufi saint and met the shrine's caretaker Mian Altaf Larvi, who is senior NC leader and member parliament from Anantnag-Rajouri seat, at his residence. Raina congratulated Mian Altaf Larvi on the occasion and felicitated him with a shawl. Raina, who is BJP's national executive member and former J&K BJP president, also wrote about the meeting on his X handle. 'Blessings from respected Peer Jenab Mian Altaf Sahib and Jenab Mehar Ali Sahib (MLA Kangan). Today, I participated in the annual Urs at Baba Nagri Wangat Lar (Kashmir),' he said. Larvis have been the spiritual leaders of the Baba Nagri and Muslim community for the past four generations with a huge following particularly among tribal communities. They have also been into politics with Mian Altaf's father Mian Bashir Larvi, before joining the spiritual tradition, also serving as four times MLA of J&K assembly and also cabinet minister. Raina also patted Mian Altaf's son and MLA Kangan, Meher Ali on his back and praised him for raising the voice of his people in the J&K assembly. Raina also told him: 'You are not only the pride of J&K but of the whole India'. The meetings assume significance as BJP and NC are the strong rivals in Jammu and Kashmir assembly. Mian Altaf won the Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary seat in 2024 defeating People's Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti. BJP had not fielded its candidate and had given hints of supporting one of the contestants not linked to Congress, NC and PDP. On the other hand, BJP has been wooing the tribal community in Jammu and Kashmir and added the Pahari group, along with other communities, to the Scheduled Tribes list of Jammu and Kashmir in 2024. Although being a vocal critic of BJP, NC vice-president and J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah has been praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking return of statehood to J&K. In January, during Sonamarg tunnel's inauguration, Abdullah had lavished praise on Modi in Sonamarg saying that he was waiting for the fulfilment of the PM's statehood promise. On Friday, during the inauguration of Chenab Bridge and Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat train, Omar Abdullah raised the issue of statehood for the union territory in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that he had been demoted while Lieutenant Governor of J&K was promoted.

J-K: LG Sinha inaugurates Rs 1,240 cr industrial unit, accuses Pak of trying to destabilise economy

Kathua (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 8 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday launched a scathing attack on Pakistan, accusing the neighboring country of attempting to 'destabilise Jammu and Kashmir's economy, divide people on religious lines, and damage its tourism sector,' even as he laid the foundation stone of a Rs 1,240 crore industrial unit in Kathua. 'After Operation Sindoor, India has shown the strength of its armed forces. But Pakistan continues its conspiracies to disrupt J&K's development,' Sinha said while inaugurating Dhunseri Poly Films Pvt Ltd at Dhanseri. 'Their plans have failed, and this massive industrial investment is proof,' he added. The LG's remarks came shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the Kashmir-Kanyakumari rail link. 'Our PM rightly exposed Pakistan's failed attempts to halt J&K's progress. Look at the investor enthusiasm - it shows they have lost this battle,' Sinha said. The new unit, expected to create over 1,000 jobs, signals Kathua's emergence as an industrial hub. 'Despite Pakistan's designs, industries are lining up to invest here. Kathua is becoming a preferred destination,' he said. Divisional Commissioner Romesh Kumar and Dhunseri Group Chairman CK Dhanuka were present at the event. Incorporated on November 28, 2020, Dhunseri Poly Films Pvt Ltd is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dhunseri Ventures, focused on manufacturing polyester films. CK Dhanuka, Chairman of the Dhunseri group, told ANI, 'We have decided to set up this plant here in J&K as part of our commitment to give something to the country and to the local people of J&K. This project will give us mental satisfaction. We expect that the entire process of setting up the plant here will be smooth without hurdles.' Arun Kumar Manhas, Director Industries and Commerce, Jammu, told ANI that this Dhunseri unit will boost the local industry. 'This Dhunseri unit will provide a domino effect to the district and the region. I am sure this plant will contribute to Jammu and Kashmir's industrial success story,' Manhas said. (ANI)
