The field is closing, says Gerda after another Comrades victory
Gerda Steyn sees the gap closing to her times in coming years after a tight race to win her fourth Comrades Marathon on Sunday. Steyn won the 2025 Comrades at the finish at the People's Park in Durban in 5 hrs 51 min 19 sec, coming four minutes clear of second-placed Aleksandra Morozova of Russia (5:55:56). Morozova, the 2022 down run winner, recovered from cramping and slowing to a walk just after the halfway stage in the Thousand Hills section of the race to close the gap to two minutes inside the last 15km. A tight women's field saw just 21 min separate Steyn and fifth-placed Dominika Stelmach of Poland (6:12:02). Shelmith Muriuki of Kenya finished third in 6:07:56 and Irvette van Zyl was fourth (6:11:35).

But there's every reason to believe it will not be the no-contest it had been in previous years. Gerda Steyn's fourth victory in the Comrades Marathon was not as compellingly dominant as her previous three. The Smiling Assassin beat second-placed Alexandra Morozova by just three minutes, clocking 5:51:09 in Sunday's Down Run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. 'It is no surprise to see a tight time of only three minutes between us, because Alexandra had done well. We can expect faster times to come — and Comrades deserves it.' Gerda Steyn wins her fourth Comrades Marathon
Gerda Steyn laboured more than in previous victories but continued her dominance of the South African ultra-marathon running and the Comrades Marathon clinching her fourth win in the 2025 race. At on stage near the end the gap between Steyn and second-placed Aleksandra Morozova of Russia was less than three minutes behind approaching the finish. Steyn dug deep and ran into the People's Park finish strongly to take the win in an unconfirmed time of 5hrs 51min 19sec , well off her 5:44.54 in her 2022 win in the last down run in 2023. The 2025 race would always have slower times given it was run over 89.98km, about 2km more than the last down run in 2023 won by Dijana because of a finish at the People's Park outside Moses Mabhida Stadium due to renovations to the 2010 Fifa World Cup semifinal venue. However, Steyn did grimace and show unusual signs of strain in the last 10km coming into Durban. The women's race best time record-holder added to her wins in 2019, 2023 and 2024. Morozova - who cramped and walked just after the halfway stage, recuperated for a period and then ended strongly to apply pressure on Steyn - ended just four minutes later in 5:55:56.
