Jagdeep Dhankhar to inaugurate Tamil Nadu Vice-Chancellors' conference being presided by Governor Ravi at Ooty: Raj Bhavan
Amid much criticism, the Raj Bhavan in Tamil Nadu announced on Tuesday (April 22, 2025) that Vice-President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar will inaugurate the annual two-day conference of Vice-Chancellors (V-Cs) of State, Central, and private universities in the State. The conference that is to be presided by Tamil Nadu Governor Ravi is scheduled to be held on April 25 and 26 at the Raj Bhavan campus in Udhagamandalam.

According to a press release from the Raj Bhavan, Mr. Dhankhar will be the chief guest of the conference. 'It aims to have detailed deliberations and interactive sessions on a gamut of issues covering implementation of National Credit Framework, academic collaborations among universities, use of Artificial Intelligence to maximise learning outcomes, financial management in educational institutions, research excellence, promoting entrepreneurship, capacity building for learners, creating wealth through Intellectual Property (IP) and careers in rehabilitation of differently abled persons,' the release said.
Eminent speakers from academia, government and industry will cover the above topics. Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India will deliver a special address on the topic 'Frontiers in Science and Technology'. The Conference aims to foster collaboration, share best practices and explore innovative approaches to higher education in a rapidly evolving academic landscape, the press release added.
This announcement comes after Mr. Ravi held a meeting with Mr. Dhankhar in New Delhi on April 19, days after the Supreme Court ruled that various Bills pertaining to universities, re-adopted by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and pending with the President, were deemed to have been granted assent. The Supreme Court judgment on April 8 had also set a timeline for the President and Governors to take decisions on Bills passed by State Assemblies.
Following the apex court verdict, on April 16, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin held a consultative meeting with Vice-Chancellors and Registrars of all State universities. Earlier, some of the allies of the ruling DMK had opposed to Mr. Ravi's move to convene the V-Cs' conference.

By 2024 assembly elections, the figure climbed to 23,65,998 — an increase of 1,32,122 in two years. According to political observers, this growth translates to an average increase of 10,000 to 15,000 voters per ward — in some areas even more — significantly raising the bar for candidate outreach and visibility. During the eight-year gap between civic elections, Nagpur witnessed two Lok Sabha and two Vidhan Sabha polls. Yet, the absence of an elected civic body since March 2022 weakened the direct connect between former corporators and residents. While a few leaders stayed active by raising local issues or joining party-led protests, many drifted into political obscurity. With the civic elections now firmly on the horizon, parties are scrambling to revive their ground presence, but are also increasingly aware that the electoral map they knew is no longer the same. Telangana workers in Israel urged to stay alert amid escalating tensions
Hyderabad: Telangana workers in Israel have been advised to remain vigilant and respond swiftly to warning sirens as tensions escalate following Israel's airstrikes on Iran. A voice message circulated across WhatsApp groups of Telangana workers urged them not to take any risks and immediately shift into safe shelters when sirens are sounded. "This is an unprecedented situation. We must act responsibly and follow all government instructions for our safety," said Soma Ravi, president of the Israel Telangana Association, speaking to TOI from Ramat Gan near Tel Aviv on Friday. The message was shared widely among the nearly 1,000 Telangana workers in Israel, most of whom are employed in construction or as caregivers in and around Ramat Gan. "We've always responded promptly to alerts. But given the current situation, we are staying extra cautious. Sirens can go off any time," Ravi added. Recalling the events of the night of June 12–13, after Israel launched retaliatory airstrikes on Iran using over 200 fighter jets, Mahesh Merugu, a worker from Telangana, said: "Around 3 am, sirens went off. We rushed into the safe room and stayed there for 40 minutes." Other workers said that depending on the alert level, they sometimes exit shelters after 10 minutes. "We must reach the nearest safe spot within two minutes when a siren sounds," Ravi explained. Interestingly, many workers are choosing not to inform their families back home about the real situation. "The moment we call and say we're safe, our families start worrying. We don't want to give them unnecessary anxiety. So far, we've never faced any serious problem here," Mahesh said. Despite the heightened tensions, the workers remain unfazed. They said they would consider returning to India only if directed by the Indian govt, but none are currently inclined to leave. Even though Israel has declared a national emergency, the workers said buses are running, allowing them to reach their workplaces.
