Jagdeep Dhankhar to inaugurate Tamil Nadu Vice-Chancellors' conference being presided by Governor Ravi at Ooty: Raj Bhavan
Amid much criticism, the Raj Bhavan in Tamil Nadu announced on Tuesday (April 22, 2025) that Vice-President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar will inaugurate the annual two-day conference of Vice-Chancellors (V-Cs) of State, Central, and private universities in the State. The conference that is to be presided by Tamil Nadu Governor Ravi is scheduled to be held on April 25 and 26 at the Raj Bhavan campus in Udhagamandalam.

According to a press release from the Raj Bhavan, Mr. Dhankhar will be the chief guest of the conference. 'It aims to have detailed deliberations and interactive sessions on a gamut of issues covering implementation of National Credit Framework, academic collaborations among universities, use of Artificial Intelligence to maximise learning outcomes, financial management in educational institutions, research excellence, promoting entrepreneurship, capacity building for learners, creating wealth through Intellectual Property (IP) and careers in rehabilitation of differently abled persons,' the release said.
Eminent speakers from academia, government and industry will cover the above topics. Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India will deliver a special address on the topic 'Frontiers in Science and Technology'. The Conference aims to foster collaboration, share best practices and explore innovative approaches to higher education in a rapidly evolving academic landscape, the press release added.
This announcement comes after Mr. Ravi held a meeting with Mr. Dhankhar in New Delhi on April 19, days after the Supreme Court ruled that various Bills pertaining to universities, re-adopted by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and pending with the President, were deemed to have been granted assent. The Supreme Court judgment on April 8 had also set a timeline for the President and Governors to take decisions on Bills passed by State Assemblies.
Following the apex court verdict, on April 16, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin held a consultative meeting with Vice-Chancellors and Registrars of all State universities. Earlier, some of the allies of the ruling DMK had opposed to Mr. Ravi's move to convene the V-Cs' conference.

TV anchor not liable for panellist's statement: Supreme Court
Supreme Court (Photo: ANI) NEW DELHI: Putting a premium on the right to free speech and expression, Supreme Court on Friday ordered the release of Sakshi TV anchor K Srinivasa Rao, who was held by Andhra police for abetting alleged derogatory and defamatory statements by a panelist on his live show on Amaravati. Justices Mishra and Manmohan said, "Rao has not made the statement. His journalistic participation in a live TV show deserves to be protected, so as that of his fundamental right to free speech. Rao shall be released on bail on conditions to be imposed by the trial court." Guest called Amaravati 'capital of sex workers' On June 6, political analyst V V R Krishnamraju had appeared as a panelist on a show anchored by Rao on Sakshi TV, considered a mouthpiece of opposition YSR Congress Party which while in govt had abrogated previous TDP dispensation's Amaravati capital project, and referred to the capital as 'capital of sex workers". Appearing for the 70-year-old Rao, senior advocate Siddharth Dave told a bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan that he was only hosting the TV show and that the statement is not attributed to him but to a panellist over whom he had no control. Opposing the plea challenging the arrest, senior advocates Mukul Rohatgi and Sidharth Luthra said that when the offending and derogatory statement was made against women of Andhra Pradesh, the TV anchor, instead of stopping the panellist, was seen encouragingly laughing. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play Chess on Your PC, Free Play Classic Chess Install Now Undo The bench sought the AP government's response to his petition seeking the quashing of the FIR against him. However, it cautioned Rao not to involve himself in any defamatory statement or allow any panelist to make such a statement in live TV shows.

Showdown Like Never Before: 4.5L+ New Voters Upend NMC Arithmetic
1 2 3 Nagpur: With the Maharashtra govt clearing the way for long-delayed elections to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) setting a deadline for ward formation, political parties are bracing for a contest unlike in the past — driven largely by a steep surge in voter numbers over the past decade. Between the 2012 municipal polls and the 2024 Assembly elections, the number of registered city voters jumped from 19.09 lakh to 23.65 lakh — a rise of nearly 24%. This addition of over 4.5 lakh voters is expected to dramatically impact poll outcomes across wards, forcing parties to redraw campaign strategies and reconnect with a vastly expanded electorate. As the state gears up for ward delimitation under a Supreme Court-mandated four-month schedule, the voter roll from the 2024 assembly elections is likely to form the basis for redrawing ward boundaries, despite the court's instruction to use the 2011 Census for population data. This has generated intense political interest in how wards will be structured — with voter increase, caste equations, and geographic spread all expected to influence the final layout. Speaking to TOI, former corporators, many of whom are eyeing a return to the fray, say the new numbers have altered the ground realities. "In my ward, there were about 45,000 voters in 2017. Now it's closer to 60,000. You can't rely on the old networks anymore," said a former corporator from south Nagpur. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "Ten thousand new voters can completely swing the result if you're not in touch with the ground." Another ex-corporator from North Nagpur noted, "Many of the new voters are first-timers who have no memory of our previous work. This means we have to start from scratch — explain who we are and why we matter." In 2022, when the MVA govt initiated a ward restructuring exercise, the total number of voters stood at 22,33,866. By 2024 assembly elections, the figure climbed to 23,65,998 — an increase of 1,32,122 in two years. According to political observers, this growth translates to an average increase of 10,000 to 15,000 voters per ward — in some areas even more — significantly raising the bar for candidate outreach and visibility. During the eight-year gap between civic elections, Nagpur witnessed two Lok Sabha and two Vidhan Sabha polls. Yet, the absence of an elected civic body since March 2022 weakened the direct connect between former corporators and residents. While a few leaders stayed active by raising local issues or joining party-led protests, many drifted into political obscurity. With the civic elections now firmly on the horizon, parties are scrambling to revive their ground presence, but are also increasingly aware that the electoral map they knew is no longer the same. "The voter increase isn't just a statistic — it's a warning," said a senior BJP functionary. "If you can't talk to these new voters, someone else will." "One thing is clear: this will be a very different election — not only because of delayed timing or ward changes, but because the city's electorate itself has grown, diversified, and changed in ways that will test even the most seasoned of politicians," said political pandits. Telangana workers in Israel urged to stay alert amid escalating tensions
Hyderabad: Telangana workers in Israel have been advised to remain vigilant and respond swiftly to warning sirens as tensions escalate following Israel's airstrikes on Iran. A voice message circulated across WhatsApp groups of Telangana workers urged them not to take any risks and immediately shift into safe shelters when sirens are sounded. "This is an unprecedented situation. We must act responsibly and follow all government instructions for our safety," said Soma Ravi, president of the Israel Telangana Association, speaking to TOI from Ramat Gan near Tel Aviv on Friday. The message was shared widely among the nearly 1,000 Telangana workers in Israel, most of whom are employed in construction or as caregivers in and around Ramat Gan. "We've always responded promptly to alerts. But given the current situation, we are staying extra cautious. Sirens can go off any time," Ravi added. Recalling the events of the night of June 12–13, after Israel launched retaliatory airstrikes on Iran using over 200 fighter jets, Mahesh Merugu, a worker from Telangana, said: "Around 3 am, sirens went off. We rushed into the safe room and stayed there for 40 minutes." Other workers said that depending on the alert level, they sometimes exit shelters after 10 minutes. "We must reach the nearest safe spot within two minutes when a siren sounds," Ravi explained. Interestingly, many workers are choosing not to inform their families back home about the real situation. "The moment we call and say we're safe, our families start worrying. We don't want to give them unnecessary anxiety. So far, we've never faced any serious problem here," Mahesh said. Despite the heightened tensions, the workers remain unfazed. They said they would consider returning to India only if directed by the Indian govt, but none are currently inclined to leave. Even though Israel has declared a national emergency, the workers said buses are running, allowing them to reach their workplaces. While educational institutions and the Tel Aviv airport remain closed, they said daily life continues without major disruptions. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
