Air India's worst crash in a decade also hits Singapore Airlines; can the aviation giant recover in the Indian market?

Time of India15 hours ago

Singapore Airlines' stock fell sharply following an
Air India
aircraft crash in the Indian state of Gujarat on June 12, 2025. The airline holds a 25.1% stake in Air India through its partnership with India's Tata Group. The accident has cast a shadow over the ambitious turnaround plans of India's national carrier, now under Tata's management, and
Singapore Airlines
' major stake in it.
On Friday, a day after the crash of the Indian carrier's plane, shares of SIA closed at SGD 6.94, down 1.28 percent from its previous close.
This also came after Singapore Airlines announced an initiative offering over 100 Air India pilots the chance to join its low-cost subsidiary, Scoot.
Air India Flight 171
, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after takeoff from Gujarat's Ahmedabad on its way to London Gatwick Airport. The aircraft veered off course and hit a medical college hostel during lunch hour, killing 241 people on board and at least 33 more on the ground. More than 60 others were injured while one passenger, a Briton, miraculously survived.
The accident is now India's deadliest aviation disaster in more than a decade and the first fatal crash involving a Boeing 787 since the aircraft's debut in 2011.
Live Events
The sole survivor of the crash, British-Indian passenger Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, reportedly escaped through a broken door and is currently in stable condition.
Following the crash, Singapore Airlines issued a statement offering condolences to the victims.
The Straits Times on June 12 quoted SIA stating that it is 'offering full support and all necessary assistance to Air India during this time'. "Singapore Airlines extends our deepest condolences to all passengers, crew members and their families affected by Air India Flight AI171. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone impacted during this difficult time," the news portal published referencing SIA.
Its financial exposure and long-term involvement with Air India can come under close investor scrutiny. The company's shares immediately dropped in value.
Tata Group acquired Air India from the Indian government in 2022. Founded in 1932 by entrepreneur JRD Tata and nationalised by the Indian government in 1953, it has been working to revive the airline through fleet upgrades, a refreshed brand identity, and a merger with Vistara, another Tata-backed carrier.
SIA's Vistara stake converted to 20% in the new Air India group, with SIA purchasing an additional 5.1% for S$360 million and committing S$880 million to support the airline.
Led by former SIA executive Campbell Wilson since 2022, the revamped Air India now operates a fleet of 198 planes, has orders for 570 more, and controls about 30% of India's domestic market, positioning it as a key player in a fast-growing aviation sector.
Tata Group chairman N. Chandrasekaran called the incident 'one of the darkest days in our history' and promised full cooperation with the investigation. The group held an emergency board meeting on June 13 to address the unfolding crisis and also announced a compensation of 10 million Indian rupees (US $116,200) to families of those killed in the air crash.
Investigators from India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau are being assisted by teams from the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Boeing, and GE Aerospace. The flight data recorder has been recovered.
Initial reports suggest multiple technical issues, including possible engine failure and incorrect flap configuration. India's aviation regulator has ordered urgent checks across Air India's Boeing 787 fleet to verify safety compliance.
The crash has also renewed pressure on Boeing, whose aircraft have recently faced scrutiny over safety and manufacturing concerns. GE Aerospace, which manufactures the Dreamliner's engines, also assists with the probe.

Bring the action to Hyderabad, chief minister Revanth Reddy tells Tollywood

Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday called on the Telugu film industry to draft a vision document that would contribute to Telangana's goal of becoming a $3 trillion economy by 2047. Speaking at the Telangana Gaddar Film Awards 2025 function in Hyderabad, Revanth said that just like the govt is preparing sectoral plans for IT, pharma, and other industries, the film industry too will have a dedicated chapter in the state's upcoming Vision 2027 document. 'Bring Hollywood and Bollywood to Hyderabad — this is where the action should be,' the CM told acclaimed director SS Rajamouli. 'You tell me what infrastructure you need; we will create it,' he said. Revanth said that while govt decisions may sometimes appear stringent, they are always aimed at empowering the film industry. Recalling the legacy of Congress govts, he said it was the Congress that instituted the Nandi Film Awards in undivided AP in 1964. He added that no film awards were given over the past 14 years, but the Telangana govt has now revived them, honouring filmmakers and artistes for every year since the formation of the state in 2014. Addressing the new generation of actors, Revanth urged stars like Pawan Kalyan, Mahesh Babu, and Allu Arjun to take a leadership role in advancing the industry's contribution to the state's economic vision. 'When India marks 100 years of independence in 2047, Telangana should also celebrate by achieving this ambitious milestone,' he said. Revanth emphasised that Telangana's competition is not with other Indian cities like Amaravati or Mumbai, but with global economic powerhouses such as New York, Tokyo, and Seoul. 'Regardless of my role in politics or govt, I am committed to achieving our $3 trillion goal,' he asserted. Paying tribute to revolutionary balladeer Gaddar, in whose name the film awards are instituted, the CM said, 'Gaddar inspired the movement for a separate Telangana. He remains a guiding force for us all.' On the occasion, the CM announced a govt contribution of Rs 3 crore to the Gaddar Foundation. Gaddar's son, Surya Kiran, thanked the govt and said the funds would help preserve Gaddar's memory and ideals. Deputy chief minister Bhatti Vikramarka and cinematography minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy presented the film awards. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Coimbatore corporation yet to get licence for new bus stand at Ukkadam

Coimbatore: While the city corporation has successfully invited tenders for the construction of a new bus stand at Ukkadam, it is yet to obtain the primary approval and licence for the facility from the regional transport authority. According to an official source, the tenders were floated a week ago and bidding is likely to be held on July 9. The state has sanctioned 23 crore for the project, the work order of which is expected to be issued within 10 days from the date of finalizing the bidder. The Ukkadam bus stand was demolished in 2018 to facilitate flyover work. Spread across 6.5 acres, the new bus stand would have two terminals – one for town buses with 30 bus bays and another for mofussil buses with 28 bus bays. The bus stand would have provisions for restaurants, shops and other facilities. A parking lot, which could accommodate 32 four-wheelers and 100 two-wheelers, is also part of the project. Commenting on the project, city corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran said, "Fund has been sanctioned for the project. We will initiate the process to obtain the approval and licence for the bus stand only after finalizing the bidder, who might want to make some changes to the plan design and amenities, which the regional transport authority would scrutinize to grant the approval and licence. It would be more like renewal of the licence obtained for the old bus stand. " Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . ITC completes acquisition of 24 Mantra Organic brand owner Sresta Natural

Multi-conglomerate ITC has completed the acquisition of Sresta Natural Bioproducts , which owns the ' 24 Mantra Organic brand' in an all-cash deal valued at Rs 472.50 crore. This will help ITC to expand its play in the fast-growing organic food products segment . "The company has completed the acquisition of 100 per cent of the share capital of SNBPL on 13th June, 2025," ITC said in a regulatory filing. On the acquisition cost, ITC said it had an upfront consideration of Rs 400 crore on a cash-free debt-free basis and addition, consideration of up to Rs 72.50 crore, which is payable in the next 24 months. In April ITC had informed it had signed a share purchase agreement with Sresta Natural Bioproducts Private Limited (SNBPL) to acquire 100 per cent stake in the company. This acquisition is "in line with the strategy to augment the company's future-ready portfolio, the transaction is expected to fortify ITC's presence and market standing in the high-growth organic products segment in both Indian and overseas market," the Kolkata-headquartered firm said. SNBPL's portfolio comprises a wide range of over 100 organic products, spanning branded grocery staples, spices and condiments, edible oils, and beverages, among others. Besides, it has a strong international presence with a deep connection with the Indian diaspora. The domestic organic food products industry offers a "significant opportunity" for growth on the back of increasing health and environmental consciousness, a rise in household incomes and new-age distribution channels, ITC said, adding that SNBPL is a pioneer and leading player in the organic packaged staples category. SNBPL has two wholly-owned subsidiaries -- Fyve Elements LLC, USA and Sresta Global FZE, UAE. SNBPL, incorporated in March 2004, recorded a revenue of Rs 306.1 crore in FY 2023-24. Over the years, it has built a strong network of approximately 27,500 farmers and 1.4 lakh acres of certified organic land across 71 clusters in 10 states.
