AGC defends ex-AG Terrirudin, says Najib's contempt bid ‘premature and unfair' as appeal on royal addendum pending

Malay Mail23-05-2025

KUALA LUMPUR, May 23 – The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) has reiterated today that contempt proceedings filed against former attorney general Tan Sri Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh are premature, as related matters are still under appeal at the Federal Court.
In a statement, the AGC confirmed that the application for leave to initiate contempt proceedings, filed by Datuk Seri Najib Razak on May 21, concerns issues that are already the subject of an unresolved appeal scheduled to be heard on July 1 and 2.
'To initiate contempt proceedings while the appeal is ongoing is unfair, premature, and prejudicial,' the AGC said.
It also defended Terrirudin, stating he had acted in accordance with his constitutional duties as attorney general and denied allegations that he had misled the court.
The AGC stressed that the High Court had granted a stay on April 28 for all proceedings related to the judicial review until the Federal Court rules on the matter.
On May 22, the High Court issued written confirmation that the stay applies to all current and future proceedings, including the contempt application.
'Any attempt to initiate or continue with contempt proceedings while the stay order remains in effect is a direct violation of the Court's directive,' the AGC warned, adding it would move to dismiss such applications as an abuse of court process.
The AGC also urged all parties to respect the judicial process and refrain from actions or statements that could interfere with the Federal Court's deliberations.
'Justice must be upheld within the framework of the rule of law, not through public statements or side litigation,' the statement concluded.
Earlier today, Najib's legal representatives accused Terrirudin of failing to act on a royal Addendum Order that purportedly called for Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.
In February 2024, the Federal Territories Pardons Board — chaired by Al-Sultan Abdullah — halved Najib's sentence from his SRC International trial conviction to six years.
Najib subsequently claimed that Al-Sultan Abdullah had also issued a 'royal addendum' for him to serve the remaining sentence under house arrest.

Police rule out foul play in Taiwanese man's fatal fall at Puchong LRT station

SHAH ALAM, June 6 — Police have confirmed that there was no criminal element involved in the death of a Taiwanese man who was run over by a Light Rail Transit (LRT) train at the Pusat Bandar Puchong station last Tuesday. Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the incident was the result of the victim's own actions, and the case remains classified as sudden death (SDR). 'Investigations found no indication of foul play or negligence. 'We have evidence indicating that the victim fell due to his own actions,' he told reporters here today. Earlier reports stated that CCTV footage showed the 63-year-old man, who entered Malaysia on May 31, walking alone before falling onto the tracks and being hit by the LRT train. Police have contacted the victim's family in Taiwan for further action. — Bernama

Cops: Over 200 suspects probed in S$5.8m scam sweep across Singapore

SINGAPORE, June 6 — More than 200 individuals are under investigation in Singapore after a major police operation targeting scams that cost victims over S$5.84 million (RM19.2 million). The two-week enforcement effort, which ran from May 23 to June 5, involved a coordinated islandwide sweep and netted 232 suspects — 149 men and 83 women — aged between 17 and 77. According to a police statement issued today, they are believed to be involved in over 980 scam cases. The scams span a wide range, including bogus job offers, e-commerce fraud, impersonation of friends or officials, fake investments and rental scams. The suspects are alleged to have acted either as scammers or money mules. Authorities are investigating the individuals for offences including cheating, money laundering, and operating unlicensed payment services. Depending on the charge, they face potential jail terms ranging from three to 10 years, and fines that could go as high as S$500,000. The crackdown comes amid a surge in scam activity across Singapore. In 2024 alone, more than S$1.1 billion was lost to scams — a record high and the first time losses have crossed the billion-dollar mark. A total of 51,501 scam cases were reported that year, continuing an upward trend that has persisted since 2019.

Zahid: Malaysia pledges stronger disaster preparedness in education sector, RM135m allocated to build relief centres for high-risk schools

KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 — Malaysia has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the resilience of its education system to disasters through the launch of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Policy 2030, which aligns with the United Nations' Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he conveyed the message during a Ministerial Roundtable themed 'Safe Schools' at the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Geneva today. 'This policy focuses on comprehensive risk reduction across all sectors, including the safety and continuity of education,' he said in a statement. According to Ahmad Zahid, one of the key initiatives highlighted was the development of the Disaster Risk Reduction Education Module by the Ministry of Education, UNICEF Malaysia and the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), which will benefit nearly 7,800 primary schools nationwide. He said the module emphasises experiential learning, hands-on training and active student engagement in line with the Asean Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response framework. To ensure comprehensive implementation, Ahmad Zahid said Malaysia is also exploring strategic collaborations with non-governmental organisations, private companies and government-linked companies. 'At the same time, NADMA's Community-Based Disaster Risk Management programme successfully engaged nearly 44,000 Malaysians, including over 12,000 youths, over the past year,' he added. He also shared Malaysia's initiative to build Permanent Relief Centres in high-risk school areas, with a federal government allocation of RM135 million. These centres will function as shelters during disasters and serve as community learning hubs during normal times. 'Malaysia has also expressed its readiness to share expertise and foster cross-border collaboration in strengthening global school safety. 'We believe that investing in resilience today is the best protection for our children's future,' he said, while leading the Malaysian delegation to the Eighth Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Geneva. — Bernama
