How four-goal Albion did it in style - and enjoyed their own party at Tottenham

Yahoo25-05-2025

Well, they took care of their own job in style.
A Jack Hinshelwood double, a Matt O'Riley penalty and a Diego Gomez stunner were ultimately not enough to keep European hopes flickering due to results elsewhere.
But this was the finale the campaign deserved.
A second best league finish and a final fling of 13 points from a possible 15.
Albion went out with heads held very high.
And, as ever, this latest chapter came against a backdrop of injuries.
This time they were without Danny Welbeck, who picked up a knock in the win over Liverpool, and Pervis Estupinan.
The latter was replaced by Igor, making his first appearance since very early January when he was forced off in the draw with Arsenal.
Without Welbeck, Albion gave Hinshelwood an advanced central role with, unusually, Simon Adingra on the right and Yankuba Minteh the left.
The wingers should have combined to give them a very early lead but Adingra dragged his shot wide after Minteh knocked down a long ball from Jan Paul van Hecke.
Adingra was involved again before Mats Wieffer picked up a clearance and thrashed a shot too high on the half-volley.
But Wieffer was involved in a more negative way as Spurs went ahead in the 17th minute.
Hurzeler proud of his team as they finish it in style
He caught Mathys Tel on the foot as the winger cut inside him and Dominic Solanke converted the resulting spot kick, going high down the middle as Bart Verbruggen dived to his left.
Spurs, after their celebrations, had probably looked livelier than we might have expected early on.
Verbruggen denied them a second goal with a stunning bit of work.
From an Albion corner, Spurs countered at pace and Tel fired in a shot which produced a fabulous low stop from the Dutch No.1 at close range.
So the deficit was a narrow one at the break and Albion sent on Kaoru Mitoma and Gomez for Adingra and Yasin Ayari, the Paraguayan taking an advanced role with Hinshelwood dropping deeper.
Mitoma immediately caused Pedro Porro real problems and, from a corner forced by the winger, Albion levelled on 51 minutes.
Brajan Gruda delivered, Adam Webster won the first header and, after challenging for the ball, Hinshelwood turned to thump it high into the net.
The game had changed with Albion pouring men forward – although midweek hero Brennan Johnson missed a sitter for Spurs.
Carlos Baleba saw his volley hit the post via a deflection off van Hecke before Hinshelwood struck again on 64 minutes.
A corner came in from the right, Wieffer and van Hecke challenged for it, Webster might have got a foot to the ball and then it landed at the feet of Hinshelwood, back to goal.
He back-heeled and it ran gently over the line.
Albion fans will also have known results elsewhere had ended any chance of Europe.
But Sussex By The Sea had replaced the Spurs glory songs – and O'Riley added to the day with a calmly taken penalty after Gomez was fouled running on to Minteh's clever pass.
SPURS 1 ALBION 4: Seagulls run riot but European hope ends
Then Gomez topped it off with a stunning curler into the far top corner from well outside the box.
There was time for James Milner to make his first appearance since the previous trip to North London - at Arsenal way back in August.
A lot has happened since then - and there is plenty to look forward to.
Tottenham: Vicario, Porro, Danso, Van de Ven (Davies 66), Udogie; Bentancur (Bissouma 66), Gray; Sarr (Odobert 46), Johnson, Tel (Spence 83); Solanke (Richarlison 66). Subs: Kinsky, Olusei, Ajayi, Moore.
Albion: Verbruggen; Wieffer, Van Hecke, Webster, Igor (Veltman 60); Baleba, Ayari (Gomez 46); Minteh (miler 90+3), Gruda (O'Riley 76), Adingra (Mitoma 46); Hinshelwood. Subs: Rushworth, Dunk, Cashin, Howell.

Richard Hughes delivers GENIUS masterstroke

It's a decision that has proven to be a masterstroke. Especially, in the aftermath of the Europa League final. Amorim has since ended up at Old Trafford, where admittedly he's inherited an even more difficult job. Yet no matter how difficult his job has been, the negative records he has set over the course of the last few months speak for themselves. Advertisement Manchester United could finish as low as 17th in the Premier League table. If it was any other season they would be in a relegation battle heading into the final day, having not even clinched the magical 40 points. Amorim's only redemption was supposed to be the Europa League final. But on Wednesday night, Manchester United faltered at the final hurdle. To make matters worse, it was to Tottenham that they faltered - a side who have perennially been known not to win trophies. The embarrassment is night for Amorim. He's been exposed and he's looked out of sorts as United. The Telegraph has even suggested, he would be open to leaving the club already and jumping ship. Advertisement Liverpool fans will be grateful that in the end Hughes opted to pursue Slot and not Amorim. Given everything we have seen it was a genius masterstroke from the Liverpool sporting director. The whole recruitment team had done their due diligence on both managers. And it paid off, Slot not only has the tactical know-how to become a Premier League champion, he's shown this season he's got the demeanour to deal with the media and with big characters in the dressing room. He was simply the best man for the job and credit to Hughes who spotted this early on and who was not afraid to go against the grain, when everyone was screaming Amorim.

NI need 'more than one captain' - O'Neill

International Friendly: Denmark v Northern Ireland Venue: Parken Stadium, Copenhagen Date: Saturday, 7 June Kick-off: 18:00 BST Coverage: Watch live on BBC iPlayer and BBC Two NI, listen on BBC Sounds and follow live text commentary & in-play clips on the BBC Sport website Advertisement Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill says he sees "no reason" to appoint a permanent captain of the side at this stage after discussions with his squad. Jonny Evans retired from international football in August and O'Neill has since rotated through a number of options. Conor Bradley, Shea Charles, Daniel Ballard, Paddy McNair and Trai Hume have all led the side in the past year and the latter will again wear the armband in the friendly against Denmark in Copenhagen on Saturday. "It worked well for us in the Nations League, so we've no reason to address it at this minute in time," O'Neill said. Advertisement "What we're trying to get from this group of players is a number of leaders, not just someone that has the captaincy for a long period of time. "The captain wears the armband, but you need more than one captain on the pitch, and I think the way we've handled that and the way the players have handled that in terms of sharing that responsibility has been a positive. "Having had the conversations with the players that have had that honour to captain the country, they feel it's a good thing as well." With San Diego FC defender Paddy McNair, who has won 75 caps for his country, withdrawing through injury, Millwall midfielder George Saville is the only player in Northern Ireland's squad over the age of 30. Advertisement Hume, 23, feels the age profile of the squad lends itself to using different players in the role. "It's probably easier to share the leadership around the group than it is for one person to take full responsibility," said the full-back who will also lead the side against Iceland in Belfast on Tuesday. "I think as a young group we probably need that. We spoke about it and it's easier to do it that way. "There's a lot of leaders within the team, not just myself." Hume previously captained the team in the Nations League against Luxembourg and Bulgaria in September but said he did not feel the role changed his approach. Advertisement "Obviously, you're wearing the armband, you're leading the team out and you're proud to do so, but I don't see it as anything different than what I would already give to the team and give to the squad," he added. "I'll just take it in my stride and just keep doing what I'm doing." Having gained promotion through the Championship play-offs alongside his international team-mate Ballard, the Sunderland duo will bolster Northern Ireland's Premier League representation next season. Of O'Neill's squad, only Liverpool's Conor Bradley and Crystal Palace's Justin Devenny featured in England's top tier during the 2024-25 season. Advertisement Hume joined the Black Cats from Linfield when they were a League One side in 2022 having also represented Ballymena United in the Irish Premiership. "I think Trai is a great example to all the young players that there is no set pathway or journey to get to be an international footballer," said O'Neill. "You don't have to be at Liverpool or Manchester United at 15 or 16 to have that pathway. Trai came down a different route through our own domestic league. "For me Trai is probably more like the lads that used to be in the squad when I was in it. Modern footballers get caught up in a lot of stuff. Trai doesn't seem to be fazed by any of that which is quite refreshing."
