Mexico are record nine-time winners of the Gold Cup, having taken back the trophy from the USA two summers ago after edging past Panama in the final in LA.
Javier Aguirre's side are the favourites to win it again this summer, with the United States coming in off the back of a tough start to the Mauricio Pochettino era that has seen them lose four matches in a row now and five of his first 10 games in charge.
The USMNT were booed off by angry fans after conceding four goals in just 36 minutes in a one-sided friendly against Switzerland in Nashville earlier this week, following losses to Turkey and in the inaugural CONCACAF Nations League, also won by Mexico, where they were pipped to third place by rivals Canada after losing to Panama in the semi-finals.
The USA are in Group D and begin their campaign against Trinidad and Tobago in San Jose on Sunday evening, with Jesse Marsch's Canada opening in Group B against Honduras in Vancouver on Tuesday.

(Photo by Cooper Neill/Zuffa LLC) Kamaru Usman (20-4) , the former UFC welterweight champion, enters UFC Atlanta on a three-fight losing skid. The 38-year-old last fought in October 2023, when he dropped a split decision to Khamzat Chimaev in a middleweight matchup. Usman lost his 170-pound crown to Edwards via a head-kick knockout at UFC 278 in August 2022. He dropped the rematch at UFC 286 in March of 2023 via a majority decision. Before his loss, Usman had defended the title five times. Usman is the No. 5 ranked fighter in the UFC's welterweight weight class. He has a career record of 20-3. Joaquin Buckley (21-6) is the No. 7 fighter in the UFC's 170-pound weight class. The 31-year-old Buckley is one quite a run since dropping to welterweight in 2023. Buckley is 6-0 during his current welterweight run with four knockouts and two decision wins. He fought four times in 2024, picking up a knockout win over Vicente Luque, a decision victory over Nursulton Ruziboev, a knockout over two-time UFC title challenger Stephen Thompson. Buckley finished the year with a doctor stoppage TKO win over former interim UFC welterweight champion Colby Covington in December. (Photo by Cooper Neill/Zuffa LLC) Rose Namajunas (13-7) was 2-1 and had under two years of professional MMA experience when she fought Carla Esparza for the UFC women's strawweight title on the season finale of The Ultimate Fighter Season 20. Esparza won that December 2014 bout by submission, claiming the inaugural 115-pound title. Over the next few years, Namajunas was essentially learning on the job, and she learned well, running up a record of 4-1 between October 2015 and April 2017. In November 2017, Namajunas stepped into the Octagon to face then-UFC strawweight titleholder Joanna Jedrzejczyk. The champ was a -700 favorite on fight night, while the challenger checked in at +500. Namajunas stunned the MMA world that night, scoring an upset first-round knockout win to become the champ. Proving her victory was not a fluke, Namajunas defeated Jedrzejczyk by decision in their rematch in April 2018. Namajunas lost the title in her second attempted defense when Jessica Andrade scored a slam knockout win at UFC 237. A non-title fight victory over Andrade, who dropped the belt in August 2019 to Zhang Weili, followed. That win earned Namajunas another shot at the title. In April 2021, Namajunas regained the belt with a perfectly timed head kick to stop Weili in the first round. She defeated the former champ by decision in their rematch in November 2021. Namajunas surrendered the title to Esparza in May 2022 in a tepid performance. Since losing the title, Namajunas is 2-2 at 125 pounds, losing a decision to Manon Fiorot in September 2023, defeating Amanda Ribas by decision in March 2024 and beating Tracy Cortez by decision in July 2024. In her most recent outing, Namajunas dropped a decision to Erin Blanchfield in November. Namajunas is the No. 7 ranked UFC women's flyweight fighter. Miranda Maverick (15-5) joined the UFC in 2020 after spending most of her time with Invicta FC. At the time, she was 7-2 and coming off a 'Performance of the Night' bonus-winning decision win over Pearl Gonzalez. Maverick opened her UFC career with two wins. The promotion then matched her against another young fighter, Maycee Barber. Barber was on a two-fight losing skid at the time. She ended that run of defeats with a split-decision win over Maverick. Things did not get any easier for Maverick in her next matchup, as the UFC booked her opposite Erin Blanchfield, who was 1-0 in the UFC, but riding a four-fight winning streak. Blanchfield kept that winning streak intact with a unanimous decision win over Maverick. Since those back-to-back setbacks, Maverick has gone 6-1 with her only loss being a June 2023 decision to Jasmine Jasudavicius. She is 4-0 in her most recent bouts, and coming off a unanimous decision win over Jamey-Lyn Horth in December. Maverick is ranked 11th in the UFC's 125-pound division. Caitlin Clark shines in return as Indiana Fever hand New York Liberty first loss of season

Caitlin Clark sized up Breanna Stewart on the wing in the second quarter, crossed over and stepped back for a 3-pointer from 31 feet. After the preposterous triple splashed through the net, Clark ribbed the two-time MVP back down the court, and all Stewart could do was laugh. After five games away from the court, Clark was rearing to go, eager to get the Fever back on track after an uneven start to the season. That her return came against the undefeated New York Liberty was icing on the cake, as the reigning rookie of the year delighted in taking on Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu in an encore of May 24's thriller between the two teams. Indiana gave away a fourth-quarter lead in that meeting but took care of business in the final period this time around. Led by Clark's 32 points and nine assists, the Fever (5-5) cracked 100 points for the first time this season and dealt the 2025 Liberty (9-1) their first defeat, winning 102-88. Caitlin Clark knocks down her 7th three to extend our 17-0 run and force a timeout 🔥 — Indiana Fever (@IndianaFever) June 14, 2025 Kelsey Mitchell added 22 points, Aliyah Boston had 14 and Sydney Colson — back in a bench role after starting in Clark's absence — had her first double-digit scoring effort for the Fever to go along with six assists. The Fever were out of sorts to start, falling behind 13-6 within the first four minutes. The deficit was still at nine when Clark returned for her second shift of the first quarter. (Coach Stephanie White played Clark in shorter spurts in her return from injury.) But a nine-point flurry in 38 seconds to end the quarter — three 3-pointers from a combined 93 feet — got Clark in a rhythm. The rest of the team fed off that energy as Indiana took a 53-50 lead into halftime, the first time all year that New York trailed at the break. Advertisement Clark was unconscious from distance in the first half, making six of nine 3-pointers en route to 25 points, her career-high for a half. She toyed with Natasha Cloud, Rebekah Gardner and any other Liberty defender who wound up guarding her. New York was forced to put Stewart on Clark in the second half with Leonie Fiebich at EuroBasket. It worked in isolation, as Clark had seven points. However the point guard still had six assists that led to 15 points and dragged Stewart onto the perimeter, compromising the Liberty's rebounding. They had thrived on second chances in the first half. — Sabreena Merchant Entering Sunday's game against the Fever, the Liberty had the league's No. 1 defensive rating, allowing only 88.1 points per 100 possessions. That mark was seven points better than the league's second-best defense. But playing without their defensive anchor Jonquel Jones, New York's defense struggled, especially in the first half. The Liberty allowed 53 first-half points, the most they had given up in a half this season. Indiana shot better than 40 percent from 3-point range in each quarter, as the Liberty tried to throw different defensive looks at the Fever, often to no avail. Cloud, Kennedy Burke, Gardner and Stewart all guarded Clark at different points in the game. And even though Clark went scoreless in the fourth quarter, with Stewart largely serving as the primary defender, New York allowed Indiana's Mitchell to get into the lane too often for their liking and surrendered open looks to guards Colson and Lexie Hull. Clark's 32 point outing will draw headlines, but it's the 39 combined points scored by Colson, Hull, and center Damiris Dantas that really cost New York this game — Ben Pickman When the Liberty and Fever met on May 24, Jones helped to orchestrate New York's fourth-quarter comeback. The 2021 league MVP and 2024 WNBA Finals MVP scored 14 of her 26 points in the fourth quarter, as the Liberty eked out a two-point win. Advertisement Jones missed her second consecutive game on Saturday as she deals with an ankle injury that she suffered against the Washington Mystics on June 5. Her absence was felt. Saturday's game flipped in the third quarter as Indiana went on a 19-0 run. The Liberty never regained the lead, and although they finished with 44 paint points, New York allowed 36 points in the paint and got outrebounded. The good news? Coach Sandy Brondello said pregame she expects Jones to return on Tuesday when the Liberty play the Atlanta Dream. — Pickman (Photo of Caitlin Clark: Trevor Ruszkowski / USA Today)
