Kelantan police launch cattle smuggling crackdown after Thai anthrax death
KOTA BARU: Police have bolstered security operations to curb cattle smuggling from Thailand in a bid to prevent the spread of anthrax, following the death of a Thai national from the disease.
Kelantan police chief, Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the 53-year-old Thai man died on May 1.
"The relevant Malaysian authorities, including the Veterinary Department, are taking this issue seriously, as many cattle from Thailand have entered Malaysia via illegal routes along the Kelantan–Thai border," he told reporters today.
Officials said cross-border cattle smuggling is rampant due to strong demand and cheaper prices.
Anthrax outbreaks in wildlife and livestock often raise concerns due to the risk of transmission to humans through contact with infected animals or consumption of contaminated meat or milk.
Mohd Yusoff said: "Following the death of the Thai man earlier this month, we (the state police) have taken the necessary measures with immediate effect.
"I have ordered the General Operations Force, as well as the district police, to step up their checks on cattle smuggling. This is to prevent the anthrax disease from spreading to Malaysia via Kelantan."
Mohd Yusoff said among the measures taken by police include setting up roadblocks, checking suspicious vehicles, and intensifying border patrols.
Mohd Yusoff said cattle smuggling along the border was now rampant. He also expected the activity to become more intense, particularly ahead of Hari Raya Aidiladha next month.
The cows and buffaloes smuggled from Thailand usually enter Kelantan via numerous illegal jetties, stretching from Rantau Panjang to Jeli, police said.
Police estimate that between 10 and 20 illegal routes along these areas are used by smugglers to bring in cattle.
Mohd Yusoff said that Kelantan has become the transit point for cattle smuggling before the animals are distributed to other states.
In early May, Thailand reported its first anthrax-related death in 30 years, prompting a public health alert after authorities identified hundreds of people in Mukdahan province who may have been exposed to the deadly bacteria.

Cambodia-Thailand border talks drag on
THE country's defence ministry has said that the country's troops haven't withdrawn from a patch of land whose ownership is hotly disputed by neighbouring Thailand, but the declaration also echoed recent statements by both sides seeking a peaceful resolution to their competing border claims. Cambodian and Thai authorities engaged in saber-rattling last week after an armed confrontation at the border on May 28 left one Cambodian soldier dead. The incident, which each side blamed on the other, reportedly took place in a relatively small 'no man's land' constituting territory along their border that both countries claim is theirs. A declaration by the Cambodian defence ministry on Monday had 'No Withdrawal of Troops' as its first principle. It said that 'Cambodian forces have not been withdrawn from any areas under Cambodian sovereignty where they have been stationed for an extended period'. The wording left unclear exactly which positions had been occupied for 'an extended period'. His statement also reaffirmed Cambodia's territorial claims covering not only the spot near Morakot village in Cambodia's north-western province of Preah Vihear where the soldier was killed, but also three other pieces of disputed land. Cambodian Defence Minister Tea Seiha himself on Sunday had painted a slightly different picture, stating that Cambodia and Thai military leaders had met and decided to adjust the military forces of both sides to return to appropriate areas in order to reduce tension. His statement appeared to be in accord with what Thai Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai announced on Sunday, that both sides had withdrawn their forces to where they had been in 2024. That came after Thailand began shutting or limiting crossing hours at some of the numerous checkpoints along the countries' common border. The tough talk on both sides appeared aimed mostly at drumming up nationalist support among their own domestic audiences. — AP

DBKL acts against violations related to cattle slaughter
DBKL enforcement officers visiting a stall during the integrated operation inspecting slaughter practices and meat sale. A TOTAL of 14 premises in Kuala Lumpur were ordered to shut for violating regulations on cattle slaughtering and selling beef during Hari Raya Aidiladha. These offences were detected by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) during a three-day integrated operation in collaboration with Veterinary Services Department and Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (Jawi). 'These include skinning and selling beef in back alleys, processing meat on dirty floors as well as disposing of fat and blood into drains. 'Some businesses were also found selling and slaughtering chickens within their premises,' said DBKL. The operation, which was conducted from June 6 to 8, focused on hotspots such as Jalan Silang, Jalan Berangan and Pusat Perniagaan Bandar Utara, DBKL said in a social media post. It said that Jawi had received applications from 240 mosques and surau for slaughtering to be done in their premises. 'There were 11 applications for slaughtering to be done outside mosques and surau, with 10 approved.' The post clarified that the application process required documents such as landowner's letter of permission, veterinary health certificate, entry declaration and exit declaration. DBKL added that it and relevant agencies would continue to uphold food safety, public health and cleanliness in the city. In a separate operation, City Hall issued 33 compounds to premises in Taman Sri Sinar for various offences including placing goods in public spaces without permission, disposing of rubbish in public spaces and drains as well as obstructing drains and disrupting the flow of water. In a social media post, DBKL said the operation was aimed at educating businesses in Kuala Lumpur and taking periodic enforcement action against offenders. 'In the meantime, DBKL is also issuing compounds and taking action against stubborn traders who are causing obstructions on pedestrian walkways,' it added. — By LEW GUAN XI
