Annual Chefs' Night fundraiser for Deerfield-based Center for Enriched Living set for May 5

Chicago Tribune18-04-2025

A delicious assortment of food awaits everyone who attends the Center for Enriched Living's annual Chefs' Night, May 5 at the Lincolnshire Marriott Resort. There will be everything from chili pork verde nachos to raspberry trifle, spinach pie, Thai salad, sesame chicken, rigatoni, and a whole lot more at this food fest that benefits the Deerfield-based organization for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Twenty-nine vendors are donating food and beverages to this benefit which is attended by 500-700 people.
Tickets are $125 at centerforenrichedliving.org.
Sue Bersh of Deerfield has been a volunteer with the Center for Enriched Living (CEL) for six years and became president of the organization's board two years ago. She has served on the Chefs' Night committee for six years, and was a cochair for three years.
Bersh praised Chefs' Night, saying, 'It's a sense of community at the event. Everyone feels like a friend when you're gathering around to support an organization you all care about. But you're having a great time in a casual setting.'
In addition to sampling food, attendees see a video that shows the impact of the organization, Bersh noted.
'We always have a parent speak about what CEL means to them, and that's my favorite part,' Bersh said.
There is also a car raffle, with tickets costing $100 or three for $275. The winner will have a choice of winning a 2025 Ford Mustang or $30,000 in cash.
There will also be a silent auction with around a dozen items.
Herb Washington, who has been CEO of the CEL for two years, has worked with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities for his entire 28-year career. He joined CEL because, 'I really felt the mission, the culture, the supports that were provided really resonated with me on a personal level and aligned with my values,' he said.
CEL serves over 400 people each year in its 20,000-square-foot building. 'Most of our clients have some degree of intellectual disability, anywhere from mild to profound,' Washington said. 'Also, autism, cerebral palsy, down syndrome.'
Board President Bersh said that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are now often integrated into the schools, 'But at age 22, they age out and they have nowhere to go. That's where we really fill a need. You hear the parents speak about what that means to them, and it warms your heart, and you realize what an important role this organization plays for families.'
CEL offers a wide range of services and activities.
'We have a day program that focuses on building social connections, orientation to the arts, and to community resources,' Washington said. That's the REACH Adult Day Program.
'We have another program called Catalyst, which focuses on teaching skills of independence and life skills,' Washington said.
CEL also has an employment program which works to connect people with their dream jobs and supports them during their employment. It also assists them to learn new skills.
'We set them up for success and then we help find the job,' Bersh said.
'We also have a mental health program that meets the mental health needs of people with disabilities but also provides mental health resources and support to families,' Washington said.
In addition, a summer camp is offered for teens and adolescents.
Washington reported that the CEL, which began in 1968 and became an independent agency in 1984, is completely independently funded. It receives no funds from the State of Illinois. Individuals and families pay for the services, with fundraising making up 50-60 percent of the revenue. 'About 60 percent of our clients receive some degree of financial assistance to help cover costs,' Washington said.
Chefs' Night, which is celebrating its 25th year, is the main fundraising event, Washington reported, raising about $500,000 annually.
In addition to raising funds, Washington noted that Chefs' Night 'is also important in that it brings future supporters into the circle and is a good introduction into what CEL is all about.'

Sunday shows preview: Trump-Musk spat leaves admin reeling; ‘Big, beautiful bill' hits speed bump

President Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk's feud spilled out in public on Thursday, with the world's richest man and the world's most powerful leader trading barbs that engulfed news cycles in Washington and abroad. Musk, a Trump ally, was vocal about his disappointment with Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill' currently sitting in the Senate. Musk, who spent millions during the 2024 presidential campaign to help elect Trump, called the massive piece of legislation a 'disgusting abomination.' Trump then weighed in on Thursday at the White House during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's visit, saying, 'Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if we will anymore.' The spat intensified, with Musk floating the prospects of creating a third party, claiming that without his political contributions, Trump would not be victorious against ex-Vice President Harris in November and accusing the president of having ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Trump threatened to cut off federal contracts awarded to Musk's companies. Later on Thursday, Musk signaled he might be open to brokering a truce with the commander-in-chief. After speaking with several news outlets Friday morning, Trump suggested he is ready to move on and indicated that he will not be speaking with Musk for a while. Trump told CNN Friday morning that he is 'not even thinking about Elon' and added that the SpaceX and Tesla CEO has 'got a problem. The poor guy's got a problem.' In the Senate, Trump's agenda bill, which passed the House chamber last month, has sparked concerns and criticism from GOP senators. The first group of GOP Sens., which consists of Susan Collins (R-Maine), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), are arguing they could vote against the bill if it slashes Medicaid benefits. Others, including Sens. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) have previously said they would not back the legislation if it retains the current debt and spending levels. The GOP can have three defections total if all Democrats vote against the legislation. Sen. Johnson will be on CNN's 'State of the Union where he will likely discuss if any of his concerns regarding the 'Big, Beautiful Bill' have been addressed. As part of a push to root out waste, fraud and abuse within Medicare, Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) said this week that a bill sponsored by Sens. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), that would crack down on Medicare Advantage overpayments known as 'upcoding,' could be inserted into Trump's massive legislation. Cassidy will be on NewsNation's 'The Hill Sunday,' where he will likely discuss the latest on the reconciliation package along with his recent visit to the White House. NewsNation's 'The Hill Sunday': Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.); Rep. Sarah Elfreth (D-Ma); U.S. Chamber of Commerce chief policy officer Neil Bradley. ABC's 'This Week': Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy; House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.). NBC's 'Meet the Press': Sens. James Lankford (R-Okla.), and Cory Booker (D-N.J.). CNN's 'State of the Union': 'Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), and Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.); Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.). CBS' 'Face the Nation': National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett; Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.); Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas); Save the Children U.S. President and CEO Janti Soeripto. 'Fox News Sunday': Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought; Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.); Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas). Fox News' 'Sunday Morning Futures': White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt; Secretary Of Interior Doug Burgum, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.); House Ways And Means Committee Chairman Rep. Jason Smith (R-Mo.); Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.). Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Trump warns Musk will face ‘serious consequences' if he backs Democrats

President Donald Trump vowed his former friend Elon Musk will face 'very serious consequences' should he choose to support the Democratic party following their very public feud. Trump delivered the warning in an interview with NBC News, during which he also said he had 'no intention of speaking to' the tech billionaire any time in the near future, citing the online threats and insults he hurled in recent days. 'I'm too busy doing other things,' Trump said Saturday. 'I think it's a very bad thing, because he's very disrespectful,' he added. 'You could not disrespect the office of the president.' Asked directly whether he believes their relationship to be permanently over, Trump replied: 'I would assume so, yeah.' The world's richest man backed Trump and Vice President JD Vance in the 2024 election, shelling out nearly $300 million in a bid to land them in the White House. In the months following their win, Musk cemented himself by Trump's side, appearing at press conferences, parties and public events, while professing his 'love' for the president. But relations ruptured between the pair on Tuesday, when Musk ripped into the Republicans' 'Big, Beautiful' budget bill aimed at enacting much of Trump's agenda. 'I'm sorry, but I just can't stand it anymore,' Musk wrote on his X social media platform. 'This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.' He said the bill would undermine much of his efforts to trim federal spending during his brief period with Trump's Department of Government Efficiency. On Thursday, he then blasted the president and accused him of being an ingrate, saying, 'Without me, Trump would have lost the election,' Mere hours later, the SpaceX founder dropped the 'really big bomb' when he alleged Trump appeared in the 'Epstein files,' referring to a trove of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein's alleged sex trafficking crimes, including those who were involved. That post was deleted Friday night. 'That's called 'old news,' that's been old news, that has been talked about for years,' Trump said Saturday when asked about his reaction to Musk's allegation. 'Even Epstein's lawyer said I had nothing to do with it. It's old news.' The president also fired back in a series of press appearances and social media posts. He threatened to not only terminate Musk's government contracts, but to get rid of his Tesla as well. Sources told NBC News the electronic vehicle is still parked outside of the White House. 'The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon's Governmental Subsidies and Contracts,' Trump wrote on Truth Social, referring to federal contracts with SpaceX. 'I was always surprised that Biden didn't do it!' As for his budget bill, Trump believes his feud with Musk has actually been positive, telling NBC the Tesla CEO helped bring it to the public's attention. 'I think, actually, Elon brought out the strengths of the bill because people that weren't as focused started focusing on it, and they see how good it is,' Trump said. 'So in that sense, there was a big favor. But I think Elon, really, I think it's a shame that he's so depressed and so heartbroken.'
