Audi's new electric version of a classic is worth the asking price
The joy of A6 |
The A6 Avant certainly goes the distance, is packed with storage and looks the part too
Like a lot of the premium car brands, Audi likes to offer options. And that is why I am now here to tell you about the latest version of the A6 whose USPs are that it is an estate (or Avant as the German manufacturer likes to call it) and it is full EV.
Weirdly though, most of my week is spent discussing the colour as this new teal-like 'Malpelo' blue was used and certainly caught most people's eye.
Yes, it is available in 'Sportback' mode too, but I had the pleasure of the Avant, which completely won me over as the week dragged on.
Loaded with a humungous range of 737km in the Performance (S or Sport line) when it is fully charged you can own this and take comfort in the knowledge that you can drive anywhere in Ireland without the stress of running out of juice. And you'll more than likely be able to get back home too before plugging it in.
Audi's A6 Avant e-tron is stylish
Onto the looks…they say: 'The Audi A6 e-tron's clean design focuses on dynamism, progressiveness, and elegance. The front is simultaneously harmonious and expressive. The slim design of the daytime running lights and the wide grille make the A6 e-tron appear flat and wide on the road.'
I say: 'Ding dong. Hook it up to my veins'. If I want to be super pedantic, I might suggest that the roofline could dip a bit more at the back (there is a mild spoiler on the Avant). But I'm really clutching here, and I'm blessed that I've tested a few super-sporty estates this year already.
The grille, or lack thereof, is one of the reasons for so much head-turning during my test week.
The main headlights and other functional elements, such as the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) sensors and the air intakes, are integrated into a dark (yet complementary) mask, making them almost invisible.
Audi's A6 Avant e-tron has a sunroof that turns opaque at the touch of a button
As you would expect, the car offers bucket-loads of space, premium levels of comfort and everyday Audi-usability. Anyone who has driven an Audi from the past six to eight years will know what this is.
It stretches 4,928mm in length and 1,923mm in width (without mirrors), and a height of 1,527mm which is 40mm taller than the Sportback model.
It comes with 19-inch five-arm dynamic wheels, designed as aero wheels, as standard but my S line gets 20-inch 'five-spoke tripod' wheels in graphite grey.
The cabin is most definitely geared towards the users' needs and anyone who travelled with me can attest to that.
The MMI panoramic display, with a curved design and OLED tech, consists of the 11.9' Audi virtual cockpit and a 14.5' MMI touch display and, together with the 10.9' MMI front passenger display (yes, you read that right), forms an unmatched digital stage with visually-clear design.
It offers plentiful storage space and various compartments too, making it as practical as it is pretty.
The centre console includes two cup-holders, a phone charger, and a storage compartment below the armrest with over 5ltr of space.
The boot boasts 502ltr of storage space (don't forget there is a big old battery in there to house) in both the Avant and Sportback models. The as-standard frunk under the bonnet offers an extra 27ltr of space, ideal for small travel bags or charge cables.
And one of my favourite features in a new car is the smart panoramic glass roof that has the ability to become opaque at the touch of a button.
The Bang & Olufsen Premium Sound System with headrest loudspeakers ensures optimum sound for your daughters to blast Tate McRae and Sabrina Carpenter songs. A highly efficient amplifier drives 20 loudspeakers with 830 watts of power.
Audi's A6 Avant e-tron comes with the option of side cameras instead of wing mirrors
Speaking of power, let's talk range. Full confession, my busy schedule meant I couldn't take this on the road for any long journeys during the week, but I can confirm that you won't have to worry much, thanks to the giant battery.
I managed 300km of driving over eight days and the range only came down 330km. Which is really impressive. And they claim 17 – 14.8 kWh per 100km.
There is a gripe though. It's not perfect. But luckily, harping back to the opening paragraph today and in the spirit of 'choice' you can opt out of my personal grievance.
In an attempt to reduce the drag coefficient to 0.21 (it's important to some, apparently) they have installed fancy cameras where there should be wing mirrors.
Impressive huh? Well, actually it is an unnecessary evil on an otherwise gorgeous car. I watched a fellow motor journalist's review the previous week and he declared 'it's weird at first, but you get used to it really quickly'.
Well, I certainly didn't. The high-def cameras inside each window are perfectly clear, but is not natural and unless drag coefficient floats your boat, I wholeheartedly recommend you don't opt for them.
Leave those behind at the dealer and you have yourself one of the best estates on the market and considering it's fully electric you can justify the €76,325 asking price.

Trump refuses to speak to Musk after he 'lost his mind' as fiery feud continues
U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that he's "not particularly" interested in talking to the former head of the Department of Government Efficiency after the two had a public spat. Speaking with ABC News, the president told ABC News Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl that he didn't want to talk to his former pal . "You mean the man who has lost his mind," Trump said. According to Trump , he was "not particularly" interested in speaking to Musk at the moment. It was also reported that Trump issued a statement to CNN saying, 'I'm not even thinking about Elon. He's got a problem. The poor guy's got a problem." When asked whether or not he plans to talk to the tech mogul Trump stated,'No. I won't be speaking to him for a while I guess, but I wish him well.' The president's comments are a stark contrast to his earlier lambasting of Musk during his meeting with the German Chancellor yesterday. Several Republican allies attempted to ease the tensions between the two. Earlier in the day, the billionaire raged that the cost of legislation is projected to add $2.4 trillion to the deficit (Image: AFP via Getty Images) "I support @realDonaldTrump and @elonmusk and they should make peace for the benefit of our great country," hedge fund manager Bill Ackman wrote. At the alleged urging of his aides, Trump tempered the verbiage of his posts. (Image: AFP via Getty Images) The telling off from MAGA allies came almost two hours after Musk attacked the president on his own social media site, X. "Elon was 'wearing thin,' I asked him to leave," Trump wrote in the first post. "[I] took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!" Trump then doubled down on his comments in a second , but equally fiery post. "The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon's Governmental Subsidies and Contracts," he added. "I was always surprised that Biden didn't do it!" This barrage against the former head of the Department of Government Efficiency did not sit well with many people on the MAGA site. Many of the users were spotted commenting on the post, saying that it was "not a good look" for the president. "Elon Musk helped to save our Republic last election cycle," one person commented. "Please stop this war of words between the two of you. If memory serves me correctly, something similar happened in Trump's first term with Elon." "You should fix this with a phone call, not through media," a second person commented. "Why are you picking a fight with one of your best allies. So stupid," a third person stated. "I wish President Trump and Musk would not trade public barbs like this," a fourth person pleaded. "It diminishes both of your accomplishments and makes you look like high school girls in a social media fight. Please, guys. Rein it in. We are so proud of you, both of you!"

Over $100b wiped off Tesla's value after spectacular war of words between Trump and Musk
DONALD TRUMP AND Elon Musk's unlikely political marriage has exploded in a fiery public divorce, with the US president threatening to strip the billionaire of his huge government contracts in revenge. During a televised Oval Office diatribe, Trump said that he was 'very disappointed' after his former aide and top donor criticised his 'big, beautiful' spending bill before Congress. The pair then hurled insults at each other on social media, with Musk even posting that Trump was referenced in US government documents on disgraced financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, without providing any proof. The row could have major political and economic fallout, as shares in Musk's Tesla car company plunged and the South African-born tech tycoon vowed that he would end a critical US spaceship program. Speculation had long swirled that a relationship between the world's richest person and its most powerful could not last long – but the speed of the meltdown took Washington by surprise. 'I'm very disappointed in Elon. I've helped Elon a lot,' Trump told reporters in the Oval Office as visiting German Chancellor Friedrich Merz looked on silently. 'Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if we will anymore.' Trump noted in a 10-minute diatribe that it had been only a week since he hosted a grand farewell for Musk as he left the cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Trump later called Musk 'crazy' and insisted he had asked the tycoon to leave because he was 'wearing thin.' Advertisement 'Ingratitude' Musk hit back in real time on his X social media platform, saying the Republican would not have won the 2024 election without him and slamming Trump for 'ingratitude.' Such ingratitude — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 5, 2025 As the spat got increasingly vindictive, Musk also posted that Trump 'is in the Epstein files,' referring to US government documents on Epstein, whose suicide in jail while awaiting trial in 2019 sparked a major conspiracy theory. 'Have a nice day, DJT!' added Musk. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told AFP that Musk's Epstein tweet 'is an unfortunate episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the 'One Big Beautiful Bill' because it does not include the policies he wanted.' Musk, who was Trump's biggest campaign donor to the tune of $300 million, separately claimed the Republican would not have won the 2024 election without his support and accused him of 'such ingratitude.' He replied 'yes' to a post suggesting Trump should be impeached, and blasted Trump's global tariffs for risking a recession. Trump finally suggested hitting the 'crazy' entrepreneur where it hurts, threatening Musk's multibillion-dollar government contracts including for launching rockets and for the use of the Starlink satellite service. 'The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon's Governmental Subsidies and Contracts,' Trump said on Truth Social. 'Abomination' When the crossfire finally relented after several astonishing hours, Tesla had seen more than $100 billion (€87 billion) wiped off the company's value. Trump and Musk's whirlwind relationship had initially blossomed, with the president backing DOGE's cost-cutting rampage through the US government and the tycoon sleeping over at the White House and traveling on Air Force One. But the 53-year-old ultimately lasted just four months on the job, becoming increasingly disillusioned with the slow pace of change and clashing with some of Trump's cabinet members. The two men had however kept tensions over Trump's tax and spending mega-bill relatively civil – until Musk described the plan, the centerpiece of Trump's domestic policy agenda for his second term, as an 'abomination' because he says it will increase the US deficit. Washington will now intently watch the fallout from the row. Musk posted a poll on whether he should form a new political party – a seismic threat from a man who has signaled he is ready to use his wealth to unseat Republican lawmakers who disagree with him. Meanwhile, Trump ally Steve Bannon – a vocal opponent of Musk – called for the tycoon to be deported, the New York Times reported.
