AFC Asian Cup qualifiers — Former Australia manager Graham Arnold set to become Iraq coach
Former Australia boss Graham Arnold will be presented as the new Iraq coach this weekend ahead of next month's crunch World Cup qualifiers against South Korea and Jordan, a senior member of the Iraqi Football Association said on Thursday.
Ahmed Al-Mousawi, the IFA official responsible for negotiating the contract of the previous coach Jesus Casas, told the Iraqi News Agency that the deal was almost done.
'Graham's contract details are almost finalised and will be announced officially upon his arrival,' he said.
'Arnold will bring with him a fully integrated technical staff of seven coaches, including an internationally renowned assistant who has previously worked with an English Premier League club.'
Arnold led the Socceroos to the round of 16 of FIFA World Cup 2022, where they lost a close game to eventual champion Argentina, but quit last September after a poor start to the third round of qualifiers for the 2026 finals.

The 61-year-old replaces Spaniard Casas, who was sacked just over halfway through his four-year contract in March after a 2-1 loss to Palestine in Jordan.
The defeat left Iraq third in Asian Group B, a point adrift of a top-two spot and the automatic ticket to the finals in North America that goes with it.
Iraq host group leaders South Korea in Basra on June 5 and second-placed Jordan in Amman five days later. Third and fourth place in the group offer a path to the finals through a fourth stage of Asian qualifying.
'The coach will meet with the players very shortly, as he will give the Iraqi Federation the full opportunity to set up a training camp in Basra Governorate, in preparation for the match against the South Korean national team, followed by another match against the Jordanian national team,' Al-Mousawi added.
The Iraqis have appeared at only one edition of the World Cup finals in Mexico in 1986, when they lost all three games to go out in the group stage.

18 is the charm for Virat Kohli: Royal Challengers Bengaluru icon finally wins the Indian Premier League
Virat Kohli has an IPL trophy. It has taken 18 years for the legend himself and fans to rejoice success in the biggest T20 league in the world. It has taken eighteen years of sheer persistence, determination, loyalty and hard work to achieve the final frontier of the 36-year-old's decorated career. Kohli, who is the only player to represent the same team - Royal Challengers Bengaluru - from IPL's inception, has ruled the tournament with the bat. He has more than 9,000 runs for RCB in over 250 matches for the team across IPL and Champions League T20, the most for any batter. The 36-year-old also has the most eight centuries. He led the franchise from 2011 to 2022 with a final in 2016, where the team fell short by just eight runs. But it was on Tuesday at Ahmedabad that Kohli got the taste of the coveted title after RCB defeated Punjab Kings by six runs. Kohli himself contributed 43 runs in the final. A young, 19-year-old, Virat Kohli had joined RCB from the draft system in the inaugural season in 2008, fresh off an U19 World Cup win as a captain. Kohli did not have the best of starts to his IPL career with just 135 runs in 13 matches. His second season was not the best either, with 246 runs in 16 matches. He showed some promise in 2010, when he got his first 300-run came as a surprise when Kohli was the only player retained by RCB in 2011, ahead of legends of the game like Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis, Dale Steyn, Kevin Pietersen and Ross Taylor. The 22-year-old Kohli repaid the faith put in him with 557 runs, including four half centuries that season. The team reached the final but fell short in the final step. He also led the team for the first time in the absence of regular captain Daniel Vettori. The batter was made the full-time captain RCB in 2013. However, his breakout season came in 2016, in which he smashed 973 runs to lead the team to the final. The tally remains the highest for a batter in a single season till date. He smashed four centuries in that season, equalled only by Jos Buttler. The 2017-19 seasons were a slump for RCB, finishing last twice and not making it to the playoffs even once. Kohli, however, was still among runs with more than 400 runs in each of the this time, Kohli had already etched his name in history books, becoming one of the best batters across the world, winning matches single handedly for India and RCB. He gave up the leadership duties in 2022 and ever since has registered three consecutive seasons of more than 600 runs, adding to his legacy with the bat. Having won everything with India - the 50 over World Cup, Champions Trophy and the T20 World Cup - it is only fitting that Kohli has lifted the coveted IPL title after 18 long years, the number he has carried on his shirt all through his legendray career.

From The Hindu, June 4, 1925: Origin of cricket
The stoolball: Stoolball gave us cricket, the earliest wicket for which was probably adapted from the upturned stool used for the parent game, but, as cricket developed, Stoolball declined, and became almost extinct, except, according to Strutt's Sports and Pastimes, in the north of England, says Major N.W. Fraser writing in an English contemporary: In 1917, however, Mr. Grantham revived it as a game for disabled officers and men, for whom cricket or football was too strenuous. It admirably fulfilled that purpose, and in doing so took on a wider popularity.
