FIFA Club World Cup: Auckland City take on favourites Bayern Munich

Photo: Shane Wenzlick / Auckland City will be underdogs throughout the FIFA Club World Cup , but their opening game looms as a true David and Goliath battle. Auckland are the only amateur side in the expanded 32-team competition held in the USA and first opponents Bayern Munich are one of the most recognisable names in the global game. The Auckland City v Bayern Munich game is the second match of the tournament and kicks off at 4am Monday (NZT) in Cincinnati. Auckland City striker Angus Kilkolly and Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane will play in the same group at the Club World Cup Photo: Photosport/AFP Auckland City are the sole representatives from the Oceania Football Confederation at the tournament, whereas Bayern Munich are one of 12 European teams competing. The German club has won the Club World Cup twice before. Auckland have made 11 previous appearances at the tournament, with a best placing of third in 2014. Auckland City are the most successful team in the region, when it comes to qualifying for international tournaments. Bayern Munich are the most successful team in German football history and celebrated the first of their 34 league titles in 1932. Bayern won 11 consecutive league titles between 2013-23 and won the latest 2024/25 season. Bayern Munich arrive in the USA, after wrapping up their Bundesliga season on 18 May, whereas Auckland City have taken a hiatus from the Northern League and Chatham Cup to compete at the Club World Cup, and will make up the missed domestic games later. Bayern Munich were active in FIFA's specially created extra-transfer window, that allowed teams competing at the Club World Cup to bring in players, signing German defender Jonathan Tah from Bayer Leverkusen and midfielder Tom Bischof from TSG Hoffenheim. Auckland City did not make any transfers, and stuck with their tried and true 28-man squad. Auckland City have been without head coach Paul Posa for the build-up to the tournament, due to personal circumstances. City assistants Adria Casals, Daewook Kim and Ivan Vicelich, who was part of the side's historic third-place finish, have guided the team in Posa's absence. Bayern Munich are coached by Vincent Kompany, a former Manchester City captain. Kompany took on the Bayern coaching role in 2024, following his role with Burnley, who were relegated from the English Premier League during his time there. "We have competed in many of the previous versions of the CWC competition, which has given us a broad range of experience, allowing us to punch above our weight in the past. Our goals are to be prepared and compete to the best of our ability," Posa told Reuters. "The challenge of having the CWC fall in the middle of the season has been ensuring that players are in top form at the right times, however, I believe we're on track to achieve this." Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane told beIN sports he was confident of adding to their trophy haul. "We're one of the best teams in the world, without a doubt, so every tournament we go into, the idea is to win. We know it'll be tough, of course, as every major tournament will be, but look, we're having a good season." Cincinnati's TQL Stadium will host four group stage matches at the Club World Cup and is one of 12 stadiums that will be used across the 29-day tournament. The stadium opened in 2021 as a football (soccer) stadium and is home to Major League Soccer side FC Cincinnati. It has also hosted seven international matches and two concerts. Auckland City and Bayern Munich's game will be the first Club World Cup action at the stadium that can hold 26,000. Auckland City's Adam Bell. Stars Succumb To Steel In Auckland

Press Release – Stars Netball The Go Media Stars have been soundly beaten 62-46 by a strong Steel outfit in their round 6 ANZ Premiership match at Pulman Arena. The Stars made an encouraging start, having struggled recently in the first quarter of matches. The Stars showed composure with ball in hand, not afraid to press the reset button and feed the ball back to their defenders before sending another attacking raid the Steel's way. Both sides traded goals and it was becoming a case of who'd blink first and unfortunately for the Stars they lost some poise and mistakes began to creep in, allowing the Steel to edge in front. Starting in goal shoot, Maia Wilson was a pillar of power under the hoop and combined well with Monica Falkner who was in the goal attack bib. The sound of the two-point hooter did little to tempt either side, as they continued to work their way into the contest, with zero two-pointers attempted throughout the quarter. The Steel finished the period the strongest of the sides and held a 15-11 lead at the break. The Steel continued to ride their wave of momentum into the second quarter and went on a ruthless seven-goal run to stun the Stars and take an 11-goal lead. However, in true Stars spirit, they refused to quit and let the Steel get away from them in front of their home crowd. The introduction of Samon Nathan to wing attack was timely, as she added a calming influence and showed her experience, re-igniting the Stars' attack and with Charlie Bell making some immense plays in the shooting circle, suddenly the Stars went on a surge of their own to be down by just four goal late in the half. Julia Wynands added spark in her Stars debut at goal defence, heaping pressure on the Steel shooters alongside Remi Kamo. The Steel responded with some nice play of their own and as the whistle sounded for the end of the half, the Stars found themselves down 29-23, after a stellar effort in the back end of the quarter. The Stars worked tirelessly to try and force turnovers and find a way to wrestle the lead off the Steel, but the Southerners weren't going to give anything up easily. Goals were traded back and forth like a tennis rally for much of the quarter and while the Stars showed promising signs, they frustratingly couldn't make any proper inroads into the scoreboard. The Steel appeared to gain a second wind late in the quarter and powered to a commanding lead, up 47-35 as the game headed to its final quarter. Despite scoreboard pressure taking its toll, the Stars continued to give their all to the final whistle with a number of plays to smile about. Kamo and Wynands combined well in their first game together and made some great defensive plays late in the fourth. Bell finished the game netting of her shots at goal in one of her best outings of the season, while Mila Reuelu-Buchanan had some classy touches to find her rangy shooter. The Stars next head to Christchurch to face the Tactix on Sunday. Go Media Stars: 46

Stu Wilson remembered: All Blacks star farewelled at funeral

Stu Wilson during his time as a rugby commentator for Sky Sport Photo: Photosport Former All Blacks captain Stu Wilson had an energy that made him unforgettable, mourners were told at his Tauranga funeral. All Blacks teammates joined family and friends at the service at Bethlehem Baptist Church this afternoon. Wilson, 70, died peacefully in his sleep at his home last weekend. Mourners heard of a vibrant personality, who had an innate ability to connect with people, as well as reaching the top of the rugby world, with his extraordinary ability as a player. He played 34 tests for the All Blacks, with 85 games in all for the national side, scoring 50 tries, 19 of them in tests. He also played 89 matches for Wellington, forging a dynamic partnership with fellow winger Bernie Fraser. Daughters Kristy and Livvy, New Zealand Rugby president Matthew Cooper and former Wellington and All Blacks teammate Murray Mexted were among the speakers at the service. A family eulogy detailed a sporting career, with a young Wilson excelling in several sports, including rugby, cricket, golf and athletics. He was born in Gore, but raised mostly in Wairarapa. In form two at Masterton Intermediate, he took part in the Wellington regional athletics champs, winning five titles - the 100m, 200m, 800m, high jump and long jump. After leaving school, he tossed up between cricket and rugby as his main sport, choosing the latter. Cooper, who also played for the All Blacks eight years after Wilson's retirement in 1984, recalled watching him play for Wellington College Old Boys in the 1970s, saying he was like a ''puppet master at the fair". Stu Wilson played 34 tests for the All Blacks, scoring 19 tries. Photo: photosport "They only needed a forward pack, a first-five and a halfback and Stu Wilson, and still would have cleaned up.'' Wilson was the "best rugby player on the planet'' in his prime, Cooper said. "Beyond the statistics, beyond the commentary, beyond the tries and many highlights, Stu carried an energy that made him unforgettable. His half-glass-full personality, always with a smile, always bringing joy, was as much a part of his legacy as his talent as a rugby player." Mexted said he had been good mates with Wilson for 50 years. On the rugby field, Wilson had a great feel for the game. "He was an international rugby star and, as the years go by, we tend to forget about how good players were, but I will never forget how good Stu was. "What I loved about him too was how much he appreciated people and how good he was to people that felt uncomfortable, and I saw examples of that throughout my years with him." He said he had a coffee with Wilson the day before his death. "He was so full of life, and he had this smile on his face and he had no inclination he was about to pass." The family eulogy emphasised his ability to connect with and help people, with plenty of mentions of his recent job as an orderly at Tauranga Hospital. "He will be admired for his talent, humour, humility and kindness. His big laugh, the glint in his eye, his fast stride and his constant smile.''
