India Today26-04-2025

India has lifted 171 million people from extreme poverty in the decade between 2011-12 and 2022-23, the World Bank said."Over the past decade, India has significantly reduced poverty. Extreme poverty (living on less than USD 2.15 per day) fell from 16.2 per cent in 2011-12 to 2.3 per cent in 2022-23, lifting 171 million people above this line,' the World Bank said in its 'Poverty & Equity Brief' on India.advertisementIt added that rural extreme poverty dropped from 18.4 per cent to 2.8 per cent, and urban from 10.7 per cent to 1.1 per cent, narrowing the rural-urban gap from 7.7 to 1.7 percentage points — a 16 per cent annual decline.
The brief said that India also transitioned into the lower-middle-income category. Using the USD 3.65 per day LMIC poverty line, poverty fell from 61.8 per cent to 28.1 per cent, lifting 378 million people out of poverty.Rural poverty dropped from 69 per cent to 32.5 per cent, and urban poverty from 43.5 per cent to 17.2 per cent, reducing the rural-urban gap from 25 to 15 percentage points with a 7 per cent annual decline.India's five most populous states — Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh—accounted for 65 per cent of the country's extreme poor in 2011-12 and contributed to two-thirds of the overall decline in extreme poverty by 2022-23, it said.advertisement"Nevertheless, these states still accounted for 54 per cent of India's extremely poor (2022-23) and 51 per cent of the multidimensionally poor (2019-21)," the brief said, adding that as measured by the multidimensional poverty index (MPI), non-monetary poverty declined from 53.8 per cent in 2005-06 to 16.4 per cent by 2019-21.The brief added that employment growth has outpaced the working-age population since 2021-22. Employment rates, especially among women, are rising, and urban unemployment fell to 6.6 per cent in Q1 FY24/25, the lowest since 2017-18.Recent data indicates a shift of male workers from rural to urban areas for the first time since 2018-19, while rural female employment in agriculture has grown.Highlighting the challenges that persist, the brief said that youth unemployment is 13.3 per cent, increasing to 29 per cent among tertiary education graduates. Only 23 per cent of non-farm paid jobs are formal, and most agricultural employment remains informal.Self-employment is rising, especially among rural workers and women. Despite female employment rate of 31 per cent, gender disparities remain, with 234 million more men in paid work. The World Bank Poverty and Equity Briefs (PEBs) highlight poverty, shared prosperity and inequality trends for over 100 developing countries. The briefs are released twice a year for the Spring and Annual Meetings of the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund and help users understand a country's poverty and inequality context at-a-glance and seek to keep poverty reduction on top of the world's agenda.Must Watch

ADB support for Viksit Bharat 2047

New Delhi: Asian Development Bank (ADB) President Masato Kanda has committed up to USD 10 billion for India's urban transformation, including metro extensions, new regional rapid transit system (RRTS) corridors, and urban infrastructure and services. This is a five-year initiative, ADB said in a statement on Sunday. While sharing the pictures of his meeting with the ADB President, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he and the ADB president shared a perspective on a wide range of issues, including India's rapid transformation over the past decade, which saw the empowerment and upliftment of countless people. "India's rapid transformation over the last decade has empowered countless people and we are working to add further momentum in this journey!" Modi wrote. Masato Kando, who arrived in India last week, marking his official state visit after becoming the ADB President, said, "By scaling up public and private sector finance, deepening knowledge collaboration, and mobilising capital, we stand ready to support India's drive to become a developed nation by 2047 and to deliver inclusive, resilient, and sustainable growth for its 1.4 billion people.' ADB has reportedly collaborated with over 110 cities across 22 states on projects related to water supply, sanitation, housing, and solid waste management, with an active urban portfolio comprising 27 loans amounting to $5.15 billion. Earlier, the ADB president also met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, where the two discussed plans to bring rural prosperity, scaling rooftop solar capacities and operationalising the UCF. Aviation industry accounts for 1.5 per cent of India's GDP, creates 7.7 million jobs

NEW DELHI: The Indian aviation industry, now the third-largest aviation market globally, contributes a significant USD 53.6 billion annually to the national economy, accounting for 1.5% of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The sector is also a key employment generator, creating approximately 7.7 million jobs both directly and indirectly across the country. During the opening day of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) annual general meeting on Sunday, Amitabh Khosla, IATA's country Director for India, Nepal, and Bhutan, said the crucial role aviation plays in the nation's economic growth. He described the industry as a major driver of employment, economic activity, international trade, investment, and global connectivity. Khosla highlighted the correlation between a country's air connectivity and competitiveness, productivity, investment levels, tourism, and trade flow. 'In 2023, the industry annually generated a USD 53.6 billion contribution to India's economy, underpinning 7.7 million jobs in the country,' he said. Tourism, supported by aviation, contributes Rs 27.1 billion to the GDP and employs 5 million people. International tourists add another USD 29.4 billion annually to the economy through local purchases of goods and services. 'Overall the travel and tourism sector accounts for 6.5% of the nation's GDP and 8.9% of total employment in 2023,' Khosla stated. Khosla also pointed out that India has shown a strong recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. While the domestic aviation market rebounded more quickly, the international segment has now surpassed pre-pandemic levels. As of December 2024, the international sector stood nearly 20% above its 2019 levels, while domestic operations were over 8% higher. 'Such a positive recovery reaffirms the strong demand for international travel and provides a firm foundation for the period ahead,' he said. The Middle East remained the top international destination for Indian flyers in 2023, with 13.7 million passengers, followed by the Asia Pacific region and Europe. To meet growing demand, airlines have ramped up flight frequencies and seat capacities. Scheduled flights increased by 77.7%, reaching about 1.3 million in 2024. Most of these were domestic, which surged from 613,000 flights in 2014 to nearly 1.1 million in 2024. Indigo led this expansion, operating 53% of all departing flights from and within India. Consumers have also benefited from increased competition, which led to a 25% reduction in real airfares in 2023 compared to 2011, Khosla noted. Currently, India has 116 airports offering commercial scheduled services, with 96 of them providing direct connections and 521 outbound international flights each day. Over the last five years, 103 new international routes have been introduced. There are currently 99 operational airlines in the country. India has also established itself as the sixth-largest air cargo market in the world, transporting 3.3 million tonnes of air freight in 2023. Khosla added that the country holds significant potential for the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
