GAA club news
Draw vs Ballinora - Killavullen and Ballinora swerved up a good tough, uncompromising game of hurling, last Sunday in Ballymah, the second field of this club, on the outskirts of Cork city. It is the second field in name only as the conditions were superb, in a complex featuring ample parking, two pitches and a walkway all around the grounds. Both teams will fell that the two points could have been gleamed for various reasons, but a draw was the outcome.
Jamie Magner opened the scoring for us, in the first minute, and Colm O Mahony added a second from open play. Killavullen were playing with the wind advantage on this elevated ground, but Ballinora equalised with two free's in the 5th and 8th minute to draw level. We lost Michael Cagney to a hamstring issue shortly thereafter, and Darragh O Grady was introduced. Ballinora took the lead with the scoring of another free from the sharp shooter , Alan O Shea before Owen Magner raced onto a breaking ball and fired it over the cross bar to draw us level., and we retook the lead with a fine point, quickly executed in a crowded play situation by Darragh. Jamie pushed us further ahead from a converted 65 metre shot, after their goal keeper turned aside a decent goal bound shot from Owen Magner. Ballinora responded with a point from play before Owen pushed out lead back out to two points, in the 20th minute.
Both centre backs, Liam Cronin for us, and Conor Quirke for Ballinora were very influential in the game and Ballinora scored next to leave only a point between the teams. We had several chances in and around their goals, when Colm Looney and Colm O Mahony fetched good possessions from the air, but got crowded out in the act of shooting. Jamie scored from open play, but Ballinora got that point back from a free, and we thought that Colm Looney deserved a free and a penalty when he was fouled and had to resort to kick the ball goalwards when his hurley was held. That kicked effort deflected out for a 65 Metre shot, which Jamie converted. Ballinora got the last point in the opening half from play, to leave the score at the interval 0-08 to 0-07 in our favour but that was surely not effort with the breeze to favour our hosts in the second period. We had seven wides in that opening half.
Ballinora drew level shortly after the restart, but then lost a player to straight red card that was spotted by the referee. Jamie put us level again from a free but Ballinora equalized from a free of their own, and took the lead in a vert tight game, from another free after 15 minutes, of dogged but determined play from both sides, this was from a situation when our puck out went askew, and a fould was conceded needlessly. Ballinora went further ahead with a nopther point, but we got a live line when Darragh O Grady scored in the 52nd minute. Scores were hard earned and scarce in this half. Ballinora got another point before Darragh scored his third point of an impressive game for him, in the 55th minute. Jamie added another free to draw us level, and Owen Magner capped another fine game for himself with a point, before Eoin Birchill though he had sealed the win for us, in the 60th minute of the game.
Still Ballinora fought back and got a point to reduce the arrears to 1 point in the 32nd minute, before Brian Cotter scored a long range point for us, in the 34th minute of the half. Ballinora forced a free when time was almost up, but in the next play, Killavullen sent a long range free over the sideline to eat up some time, but were not set up for the quick side cut that Ballinora took, and from that play, they forced the equalizer on the 8th minute of additional time.
Game over on the restart, and the teams shared the spoils on 0-15 each.
Division 4 hurling - Killavullen powered their way to the summit of the Avondhu Division 4 hurling league with a strong second half display against Buttevant, played in Buttevant earlier today, on a pitch that you could admire all day long.
Kian Lane opened the scoring for us, with a point, but we were rocked back on our haunches soon afterwards when Buttevant scored a goal, with their opening attack. They tacked on another point before Sean Palmer added a point for us, and then Buttevant added another point from a free. Joe Cagney, Sean's partner in crime in midfield, scored a delightful point for us, from out on the wing but Buttevant, with the aid of the breeze, were a goal in front again, when they scored the next point. Sean Woulfe scored a long-range point from a free, that he had won himself before Colm Hannon finished to the net emphatically after a great run through the middle by Sean Palmer, drew the man and isolated Colm. Colm then added a smart point and the new make-shift full forward in Cian O Connor scored a point and then Sean Palmer again to have Killavullen in the lead by 1-07 to 1-03 after 15 minutes.
Conor O Brien was very effective for Buttevant as well as Kyle Bowles in their inside forward line, and Buttevant got two points back from those sources. Sean Palmer was buzzing a round the field though, and Joe Cagney, gathered a great pass from Barry Cotter and when Joe delayed his pass until Sean ran into the channel, a great team goal resulted Again Buttevant replied with two more scores, the later a free before Mike Walsh scored a fine point, and Colm Hannon forced a great save from the Buttevant net stopper after he, Colm was found in space by a dinky cross field pass from Cian. Sean Woulfe, by two and Colm Hannon added further points to our tally to leave the score at the break 2-11 to 1-07 in our favour.
On the restart, Sean Woulfe finished right into the corner from a searing, racking pass from Seamus O Mahony who at times, was very clever in our centre back berth, with his general pass and especially the distribution. Mike Walsh added another point before Kyle Bowles got one back for Buttevant. Colm Hannon scored another goal after a clever pass from Padraig Cronin to Ian O Mahony and the pass from Ian to his better place colleague found Colm in way too much space, and he capitalised.
That was the cue for a raft of Killavullen changes from there to the end of the game, and it was refreshing to have both Kevin and Seamus Fox back amongst us, after several years in Australia. Better still that they showed up competitive, fit, and eager, and with places to be won on the Junior A team, bringing on substitutes into this Division 4 team, does not weaken it, one bit. Competition for places is that keen.
Buttevant stayed in the game with another point, before Sean Palmer and Sean Woulfe added to their haul with more scores. Buttevant got another point before Joe Cagney got the next point, and Darragh in our goals brought off a good save. Mike Walsh, and the birthday boy, Niall Feaheny scored two goals with accomplished finishes to put a gloss on the scoreline. Buttevant added another goal, before Seamus Fox found the net, that he had threatened to do, immediately after his introduction, to bring the final score of the game to 7-15 to 2-10.
The best aspect about this game was the confidence in the Killavullen players to play intricate passes around the field, confident of where the space was, and the close control of the Killavullen players, that allowed them time to control the ball, and effect good decisions. A nice overall balanced team, that is coming along nice and great to get some injured players back into the mix again, as well as the returning emigrants.

The format will be a champagne scramble, which should make for lively scoring.

Tyrone footballers draw high praise all round

If you've even a drop of Tyrone blood running through your veins, and if Gaelic football is your passion, then there's some decidedly pleasant reading for you in the sports pages today. First, Paul Keane reports on the county securing back-to-back under-20 All Ireland titles by beating Louth at the Athletic Grounds last night. It was an evening that 'red-hot forward duo Noah Grimes and Eoin McElholm will not forget any time soon,' the pair scoring 4-10 between them. Second, Ciarán Murphy salutes Tyrone's performance against Donegal in Ballybofey last weekend, in particular their brilliance in those breathless closing minutes when we saw 'some of the new ways the rule enhancements have brought the game forward'. Laois goalkeeper Killian Roche, who'll be in action against Offaly on Saturday in the final round of Tailteann Cup group games, is happy enough with most of the new rules , conceding that the 'game needed changing'. But 'taking away the back-pass from the keeper is one thing, still insisting on the kickout going long is another layer'. In rugby, John O'Sullivan has word on Tadhg Beirne and Aoife Dalton winning the Players' Players of the Year awards , Beirne, of course, unable to accept his in the flesh – he has URC business to attend to in South Africa. Johnny Watterson talks to Beirne's Munster comrade Calvin Nash ahead of their quarter-final match against the Sharks on Saturday. READ MORE And John hears from James Lowe in the build-up to Leinster's URC quarter-final against Scarlets, Lowe determined that the departing Cian Healy and Ross Byrne – Healy in to retirement, Byrne off to Gloucester – leave with another medal around their necks. In football, the latest stage of Robbie Keane's managerial career saw him lead Ferencváros to their seventh consecutive Hungarian league title last weekend. For once, they actually had some competition, in the form of prime minister Viktor Orban's club, Puskas Akademia, recipients of 'state funding on a staggering scale'. Tom Mortimer details the wild and wacky landscape of Hungarian football. As Dave Hannigan tells us, Jim Irsay's life was a bit on the wild and wacky side too , the Indianapolis Colts owner, who died last week at the age of 65, 'adored by fans, players, and coaches alike'. He leaves behind 'an eclectic collection of artefacts', including Muhammad Ali's Rumble in the Jungle championship belt and the guitar Kurt Cobain wielded in the Smells like Teen Spirit video. How much did he love his collection? He once turned down an offer of $1 billion for it. TV Watch: Shane Lowry is the sole Irish player in the field at the Memorial, which gets under way today at Muirfield Village (Sky Sports Golf, 4.30pm), while Leona Maguire flies the flag at the US Open, the second Major of the year on the LPGA Tour (Sky Sports Mix, 5pm). Philip Reid previews both tournaments .

Armagh even stronger with the return of Rian O'Neill

Armagh were already a force to be reckoned with, but the return of Rian O'Neill makes them 'even stronger now,' writes Darragh Ó Sé. But what about the fellas whose feathers might have been ruffled by his reappearance? 'Cry me a river, boys,' says Darragh . When this side has the chance to become the first from Armagh to retain Sam Maguire, 'do you want to sing a sad song or do you want to go after back-to-back All-Irelands?' That's them told. There might have been a tear or two shed in the Waterford hurling camp after their defeat by Cork last weekend ended their championship season even before summer arrived. Seán Moran reckons manager Peter Queally's suggestion that hurling follow football's example by having an All-Ireland series after the provincial championships might be worth a look. Gordon Manning, meanwhile, talks to Kerry captain Cáit Lynch about her second coming for the All Ireland football champions, following a spell living in the Netherlands, and Ciarán Kirk hears from Meath captain Aoibhín Cleary who's hoping to lead her county to their third All Ireland in five years before she sets off for Australia to play for Richmond in the AFLW. In rugby, Gordon D'Arcy looks at Leinster's desperate need to finish their season on a high , 'having morphed into the 'nearly men'', by winning the URC. 'There's one caveat. How badly do they want it,' he asks. READ MORE Munster's last URC trip to South Africa wasn't the most fruitful, ending in defeats by the Stormers and Sharks. They are, then, hoping for a happier outcome when they return to Durban to take on the Sharks again in Saturday's quarter-finals. Gerry Thornley talks to interim coach Ian Costello ahead of the game. And just to get you in the mood for this summer's Lions' tour, Luke McLaughlin reminisces about his trip to Australia in 2001 when the hosts recovered from losing the first test to take the series 2-1 against Graham Henry's side. Luke has a warning for Andy Farrell's current crew: 'Be warned: the Aussies still hate losing, and are sure to indulge in a spot of Lions-baiting, too.' In football, Gavin Cummiskey looks back on an English season that had a fair few more lows than highs for Irish players , to the point where there might be as few as seven of them playing in the Premier League next season. Caoimhín Kelleher will, more than likely, leave Liverpool in search of regular game-time, while Evan Ferguson's career is in need of a serous reboot. And in racing, the career of 'arguably the best stayer seen in Europe for decades' came to an end on Tuesday when Kyprios was retired after aggravating an old injury , Brian O'Connor hearing from his trainer Aidan O'Brien. 'He's been the most incredible horse, he had an incredible mind to go with his incredible ability,' he said of the two-time Ascot Gold Cup winner. TV Watch : TNT Sports continues its coverage of the French tennis Open (from 10am) and cycling's Giro d'Italia (from 11.30am) today, and at 7.30 this evening, TG4 has the under-20 All Ireland football final between Louth and Tyrone. Half an hour later, Chelsea and Real Betis kick off in the Conference League Final (TNT Sports 1).
