Closing Bell: ASX climbs as courts strike down Liberation Day tariffs, re-energising markets
Energy sector pushes ASX 0.15pc higher
US court has ruled Trump's Liberation Day and fentanyl tariffs are unlawful
Steel, aluminium and auto tariffs remain in place
The ASX has posted another gain today, albeit a small 0.15% lift.
News US courts had blocked Trump's tariff spree gave the market tailwinds, while the Energy sector powered higher.
As has been the story in recent weeks, Info Tech and the Banks contributed handily to the Aussie market's gains, with both indices trending higher.
Woodside Energy (ASX:WDS) continued its gains after receiving the green light for its North West Shelf gas project, climbing 3.05%.
Capstone Copper (ASX:CSC) also continued its ascent, up 5.42% as copper's outlook continues to improve, and Liontown Resources (ASX:LTR) posted a 4.13% recovery today, although still down 3.08% for the trading week.
Markets roar back to life as courts block Trump tariffs
While President Trump has signalled his intention to appeal a court decision to block his Liberation Day tariffs, global markets are already celebrating.
"The law is clear: no president has the power to single-handedly raise taxes whenever they like," New York attorney general Letitia James said.
"These tariffs are a massive tax hike on working families and American businesses that would have led to more inflation, economic damage to businesses of all sizes, and job losses across the country if allowed to continue."
Futures for US markets are sharply higher in after-hours trade. S&P500 Futures are up 1.7%, Dow Jones 1.33% and the Nasdaq 1.97%.
In Asia, the Japanese Nikkei 225 soared 1.91% in trade today, while the Shanghai Composite Index has added 0.72%.
The US dollar has also made a small recovery, lifting the US Dollar Index (comparing it to a basket of major currencies) 0.33% today.
That pushed gold lower, sliding 0.84% to about US$3270.64.
'The Albanese government has been consistent in the view that these tariffs on Australian imports into the US are unjustified,' Australian minister for trade Don Farrell said.
'We will continue to engage and strongly advocate for the removal of tariffs.'

TRUMP AND ELON DRAMA Elon Musk and Donald Trump have exploded back into headlines today. That's right, the political bromance of tech billionaire Elon Musk, and US President Donald Trump is over. But what on earth happened? Well, from Mr Trump's first day in office, Elon Musk had been a major player. But recently, the pair started butting heads over some policies, particularly this spending bill called the One Big Beautiful Act, and last week, Musk left his role at the White House. But things really escalated overnight after the President said this. Mr Musk started firing back on his social media platform, X. And then the President hopped on his social media platform and well, the fight of the century began. It's been a war of words that honestly you'd expect from more of a roast battle. And while plenty of people have the popcorn out, lots are also worried about what it'll mean for American politics, if this feud continues to escalate. SOCCEROOS The Socceroos are on the brink of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a nail biting one-nil win last night. Japan dominated play for most of the match, until the very final minute when Aziz Behich scored this winning goal. It was his first Socceroos goal in 13 years and Australia's first win over Japan in 16 years. And as long as they avoid a heavy defeat in next week's game against Saudi Arabia, they're all but certain to qualify. PARA SPORT Now over to Darwin, where students living with disabilities are taking part in a program that's all about trying new sports and getting active. From golf, to wheelchair rugby, these kids in Darwin are discovering their new favourite sports. It's all part of a national program designed to encourage people living with disabilities to explore different sports, and this year more than 250 students took part. And Sam says events like this aren't just about getting active, they're about giving it a go, making friends and having a lot of fun at the same time. ROBOTS MOVING HOUSES First up, to a block of buildings on the move in China! 400 robotic feet lifted and moved them in sync. They're actually being moved back to their original location after making way for underground construction works. The robots moved the buildings, weighing 7-and-a-half thousand tonnes, at a rate of about 10 meters per day. SWITCH STAPLES Now to people around the world who have lined up for hours just to buy the new Nintendo Switch 2. But for some customers in the US, excitement quickly turned to disappointment, as reports of punctured screens appeared on social media. Turns out, because Nintendo packaged the Switch with its screen facing outwards, when game shop employees used staplers to staple receipts to the front of boxes. A whole bunch of console screens were left damaged. One shop has already offered to replace them, adding staplers have been confiscated. STANLEY PUP And finally, if you've ever wanted to watch dogs play hockey, this is the closest you're gonna get. The world's first Stanley Pup, a play off the famous Stanley Cup hockey championship, features rescue dogs who are all up for adoption. It's a collaboration between America's national hockey league and an animal welfare charity.

Barry FitzGerald: Katanning ticks all the boxes for an Ausgold re-rate
'Garimpeiro' columnist Barry FitzGerald has covered the resources industry for 35 years. Now he's sharing the benefits of his experience with Stockhead readers. After its dramatic rise in the opening months of the year to record levels, the Aussie gold price has settled into a bit of a groove around the $5,200/oz level. Nothing wrong with that. It's a fantastic price and delivers fat margins to even our highest cost gold mines. And it is not to suggest that gold can't take off again and set new highs or fall significantly for that matter. The observation is that for the last six weeks or so the Aussie price has been as steady as it could be in these turbulent times. It means that share prices of ASX-listed gold producers and developers have also gone into a sideways trading pattern. Need to differentiate So more than has been the case in recent times when gold took off to record levels, the producers and developers now need to differentiate themselves from the pack with strong newsflow of the re-rating inducing type. It means that if the gold price continues to trade sideways, the stock involved has a reason to go higher. Alternatively, if the gold price heads south, the damage to the stock could be more limited than it would have been otherwise. Taking all that on board, Garimpeiro had a look at his calendar during the week to find which of the gold producers/developers have re-rating event(s) on the horizon. Ausgold stands out Ausgold (ASX:AUC) stood out for the pending release this month of a definitive feasibility study (DFS) into the development of its Katanning gold project, a three-hour drive from Perth in WA's southwest Yilgarn region. Katanning is one of the biggest undeveloped gold deposits in the country at 3.04 million ounces and has previously been scoped as having the potential to produce 136,000 ounces annually from open-cut ore sources for more than 10 years. All-in sustaining costs were put at $A1,549 and preproduction capital costs weighed in at just under $300m. But those are 2023 figures and things will have changed, including the reserve component of the resource thanks to infill drilling work. Gold prices have increased dramatically since those 2023 figures but so have construction costs. Having said that, the expectation is that the DFS will confirm Katanning as a very robust project with a super quick capex payback capability. Take that and the scale of the project – production in the early years will be higher still because initial higher grade ores - and Ausgold's $240 million market cap at 67c share looks to be on the mean side of things. The company has the lowest resource ounce valuation metric of its peer group for no apparent reason, except perhaps the project has been in the works since 2010 under Ausgold ownership. So the story of the resource growth since, and the pending release of the DFS leading into a development decision by year end, has been overlooked to a large degree by the market on a fatigue basis alone. Katanning momentum Momentum for Katanning is now the order of the day under John Dorward, Ausgold's executive chairman who arrived on the scene in May last year. A can-do sort of guy, Dorward was the former president and CEO of TSX-listed Roxgold, a West African gold group acquired by fellow Canadian Fortuna Silver Mines in an all-scrip deal worth $US884 million in 2021. Two weeks in the job at Ausgold and Dorward put Katanning on the development pathway by pulling in $38 million in equity, including $1m from his own pocket. That is being spent getting to the DFS stage and on a three-pronged strategy of establishing a bigger mining reserve component in the mineral resource estimate, extending the scale of the resource and making regional gold discoveries. Morgans' 94c target Morgans' veteran analyst Chris Brown has a 12-month price target on the stock of 94c. 'Our expectation is that delivery of a DFS broadly confirming or improving on the preliminary feasibility study, and employing a higher gold price, should prove positive for the share price,' Brown said. He also flagged that a final investment decision on a project development – expected by the end of the year - should also prove positive depending on the terms of the project's financing package. ''Our valuation will likely lift with the delivery of the DFS, and again when the final investment decision is taken,'' Brown said.
