Man jailed over home arsenal of 28 firearms
A man who kept 28 firearms including pistols and shotguns at his village home has been jailed for five years and four months.
Police were alerted to Philip Maylen's domestic arsenal when Border Force officials intercepted a parcel of gun parts addressed to him.
They raided his home in Kingsclere, Hampshire, in December 2024 and found four Glock pistols, nine shotguns, six long-barrelled firearms and a deactivated Bren machine gun among other weapons.
The 58-year-old pleaded guilty at Reading Crown Court to 15 counts of possession of a prohibited firearm and one count of possession of ammunition without a certificate.
Maylen, of Penny's Hatch, bought guns and components from companies in the UK, United States, Canada, New Zealand and Estonia, police said.
He spent at least £16,000 on weapons over a five-year period, according to the National Crime Agency.
NCA manager Tim Lambert said: "This is one of the largest caches of illegal firearms I have seen at a single address.
"Maylen also put himself at risk of being targeted by criminals who might have attempted to take the guns from him, had they known about them."
The NCA said Maylen's motive for stockpiling the weapons was not discovered.
The haul, found over the course of a two-day search, also included 11 replica firearms and 100 bullets, the agency added.

Oakland Co. sheriff's deputies found loaded weapons at high school graduation in Pontiac
Oakland County sheriff's deputies found multiple fully loaded weapons at a high school graduation in Pontiac on June 3 and believe suspects could have carried out a mass shooting at the event, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said in a news conference Friday, June 6. Deputies "probably prevented a mass shooting," Bouchard said and are still searching for one suspect, Jamarion Hardiman, 20, of Pontiac. Deputies found multiple weapons around the United Wholesale Mortgage sports complex on South Boulevard where the Arts and Technology Academy of Pontiac graduation was being held. Sheriff's deputies were originally called out after reports of a brawl breaking out, but were told by an individual at the event that rumors of Snapchat threats about a possible shooting were circulating, according to Bouchard. As deputies started to investigate the individuals involved in the fight, they learned they had been seen placing packages under cars at the sports complex's parking lot, and found that those packages were weapons. The weapons found include what Bouchard described as an AR-style pistol and a Glock semi-automatic handgun. Both were loaded with 40-round magazines, Bouchard said. The guns were not registered. "Just those two weapons without changing magazines had 80 rounds of potential firepower shooting into a graduation," Bouchard said. "You can only imagine the outcome of that." One suspect, a 19-year-old Bouchard did not name, is in custody. Another, Hardiman, is still wanted. Neither were graduating students, but had ongoing disputes with others in the school community. 'Male escort' actually cocaine smuggling gang leader
A man who claimed he made his money working as a male escort was actually the leader of a gang which smuggled cocaine worth £20m, investigators discovered. Kulvir Shergill, 43, of Oldbury was jailed for more than 21 years after he eventually pleaded guilty to smuggling class A drugs, the National Crime Agency (NCA) said. Four other members of the gang were also jailed, including Jagdeep Singh, who was sentenced to six years and eight months at Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday. The gang imported around 250kg of cocaine with a street value of £20m in 2020 and used the encrypted communications platform EncroChat to arrange the deals. Shergill told NCA investigators he made his money through male escort bookings, teaching martial arts and lucrative personal trainer work. But investigators found he arranged premises in the UK for Class A drugs to be delivered to. He would liaise with conspirators in the Netherlands who would inform him of impending deliveries before his group distributed them to other members around the country. Singh of Tipton was in possession of 30kg of high purity cocaine at the time of his arrest. The 43-year-old was an electrician and was tasked with taking receipt of drugs deliveries and acting as a warehouseman. Three other members were jailed in September: Khurram Mohammed, 37, of Barker Street, Oldbury, was also jailed for 14 years and four months. Shakfat Ali, 38, of Douglas Road, Oldbury, travelled around the UK on the gang's behalf and is believed to have delivered drugs. He was jailed for 16 years and nine months. Mohammed Sajad, 44, of Norton Crescent, Birmingham, was jailed for 16 years. He was already serving a seven-year sentence before these offences. Rick Mackenzie, NCA operations manager, said: "These offenders formed a significant crime group in the West Midlands and had far-reaching contacts to help them peddle drugs all around the UK. "Shergill and his accomplices are directly responsible for the horrendous consequences Class A drugs have among our communities." Follow BBC Birmingham on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X and Instagram.
