
Debating championship launched to empower youth
MUSCAT: The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, in collaboration with the Oman Debate Centre, has launched the 8th edition of the National Debating Championship, a key initiative aimed at enhancing the art of persuasion, critical thinking and constructive dialogue among young people.
The championship reflects Oman Vision 2040 goals of youth empowerment and fostering a culture of effective discourse. By equipping participants with public speaking and analytical skills, the programme prepares them to engage meaningfully with national, regional and global issues.
Training sessions begin today, starting with the fundamentals of debating. The second session on Tuesday will focus on argumentation and refutation, while the third will cover case analysis and presentation techniques.
This year's championship introduces a new format for the qualifying stages, divided across three major stations:
April 11 at the Arab Open University (Muscat Governorate), for participants from Muscat, Al Dakhiliyah, Al Batinah South, Al Sharqiyah North and Al Sharqiyah South.
April 18 at the University of Buraimi (Al Buraimi Governorate), for participants from Al Batinah North, Al Dhahirah, Al Buraimi and Musandam.
April 21 at Dhofar University (Dhofar Governorate), for teams from Dhofar and Al Wusta.
School-level qualifiers will be held virtually to ensure broader participation.
Hilal bin Saif al Siyabi, Director-General of the Directorate-General of Youth at the Ministry, described the event as a cornerstone in shaping eloquent, thoughtful youth, capable of presenting informed viewpoints with clarity and respect. He emphasised the growing level of competition and participation year after year.
Nasser bin Humaid al Hinai, CEO of the Oman Debate Centre, echoed these sentiments, stating that the championship aims to cultivate a generation of future leaders through structured debate and intensive training.
Following the preliminary rounds, 272 debaters from 68 teams - including clubs and educational institutions - will advance to the finals. The champions will go on to represent the Sultanate of Oman in future international competitions.
Registration is open to teams from schools, universities and clubs across Oman, further embedding debate as a vital educational and developmental tool.

Oman presents commemorative plaque to WTO in Geneva
Muscat – Oman has gifted a commemorative plaque to World Trade Organization (WTO) to mark the visit of H H Sayyid Bilarab bin Haitham al Said to its headquarters in Geneva on June 21, 2023. Created by Omani artist Salem bin Khamis al Salami, the plaque is a symbolic representation of Oman's civilisational heritage, natural diversity and its future development vision. It was created under the supervision of Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion in collaboration with Omani Society for Arts, which is affiliated to Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth. Presentation of the plaque reflects Oman's approach to cultural diplomacy and its growing engagement with international institutions. H E Qais bin Mohammed al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, said, 'This initiative reflects Oman's commitment to promoting cultural exchange and building international partnerships through the arts.' He also praised H H Sayyid Bilarab's role in promoting art as a means of global communication. H E Sayyid Said bin Sultan al Busaidi, Undersecretary for Culture in Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, described the gift as a 'cultural and civilisational statement' aligned with Oman Vision 2040. H E Idris bin Abdulrahman al Khanjari, Oman's Permanent Representative to United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva, emphasised the diplomatic significance of the gesture. The plaque is now displayed in WTO's Salle des Pas Perdus, a space reserved for artwork that celebrate dialogue and multilateral cooperation. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of WTO, said, 'A nice ceremony to unveil the beautiful painting gifted by Oman to WTO. The occasion also marked Oman's 25th year of accession to WTO. We appreciate Oman for this wonderful gift. Congratulations and many thanks to H H Sayyid Bilarab who took special interest in this project, to the artist, to the ambassador and the team for the hard work.'

Call to make premarital screening compulsory gains pace in Oman
Ibri – Ministry of Health held a seminar in Ibri, Dhahirah on Tuesday highlighting the vital role of premarital medical screening in building healthy families and raising community awareness. Held under the theme 'Premarital Medical Screening: A Step Towards Building a Healthy Family and an Informed Society', the seminar formed part of National Premarital Screening Programme to promote awareness on premarital testing. It was organised by the Directorate General of Health Services in Dhahirah and held under the patronage of Najib bin Ali al Rawas, Governor of Dhahirah. The seminar underscored the need to intensify awareness campaigns targeting youth and those preparing for marriage, and called for making premarital screening a mandatory requirement. Participants also recommended the establishment of dedicated counseling sessions to help prospective couples understand and manage test results in a scientific and compassionate manner. Emphasis was placed on upholding confidentiality and privacy of test results, and on preventing any misuse of such information. Among the recommendations was the need to provide psychological and social support for couples whose test results are incompatible, especially in cases where health issues could impact marriage plans. Inclusion of premarital screening topics in school curricula from Grades 10 to 12 and at the university level was also proposed to promote early awareness, foster scientific research, and reduce the incidence of genetic diseases. These initiatives align with Oman Vision 2040 objectives for public health and quality of life, focusing on prevention and community wellbeing. Dr Ahmed bin Saeed al Kalbani, Director General of Health Services in Dhahirah, described premarital screening as a cornerstone to preventing hereditary diseases, and a proactive step that can spare families long-term suffering. The seminar featured several presentations by specialists on the medical, social and legal aspects of screening. Prof Dr Salam bin Salem al Kindi, Senior Consultant of Hematology at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, reviewed key genetic diseases covered by the National Premarital Screening Programme. Dr Sarah bint Nasser al Waili, Director of Primary Healthcare Department, outlined the objectives and implementation mechanisms of the National Premarital Screening Programme.

Oman, Bahrain explore strengthening ties
MUSCAT: Faisal bin Abdullah al Rawas, Chairman of Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI), on Tuesday received Abdulla Adel Fakhro, Minister of Industry and Commerce of the Kingdom of Bahrain. The two sides discussed ways to enhance trade and investment cooperation between Oman and Bahrain, expanding opportunities for private sector partnerships in both countries through joint ventures and knowledge exchange, contributing to bilateral relations and economic integration. The meeting also reviewed opportunities in key economic sectors of mutual interest and explored mechanisms to activate the private sector's role in establishing joint projects that support economic development in both nations.
