Palm rangebound; traders await MPOB data and export estimates
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian palm oil futures traded in a tight range on Tuesday, as traders awaited cargo surveyors' export estimates and the Malaysia Palm Oil Board's supply and demand data for further cues.
The benchmark palm oil contract for August delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange gained RM1, or 0.03 per cent, to RM3,926 (US$927.69) a metric ton in early trade. The contract has so far risen for the third straight session.
Dalian's most-active soyoil contract rose 0.23 per cent, while its palm oil contract added 0.56 per cent. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade were up 0.87 per cent.
Palm oil tracks price movements of rival edible oils, as it competes for a share of the global vegetable oils market.
The MPOB is expected to release its May supply and demand data later in the day.
Cargo surveyors are expected to release Malaysian palm oil export estimates for May 1-10 later in the day.
Oil prices edged up as market participants waited for the outcome of US-China talks that could pave the way for easing trade tensions and improve fuel demand.
Stronger crude oil futures make palm a more attractive option for biodiesel feedstock.
The ringgit, palm's currency of trade, weakened 0.07 per cent against the dollar, making the commodity slightly cheaper for buyers holding foreign currencies.
Palm oil remains neutral in a widened range of RM3,889 to RM3,961 per metric ton, and an escape could suggest a direction, Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao said.
Stocks were buoyant and the dollar remained on guard on Tuesday as trade talks between the United States and China were set to extend to a second day, with tentative signs tensions between the world's two largest economies could be easing.

Maxim submits appeal after cease-and-desist notice from Apad
KUALA LUMPUR: Maxim Malaysia has filed an appeal and submitted all relevant documents to the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) following the issuance of cease-and-desist letters for operating without a valid E-Hailing Vehicle Permit (EVP) authorisation. Its Head of Legal and Government Relations, Mushfique Ahmed Chowdury, said the company had just concluded a meeting with Apad and had provided all necessary documents and explanations, including the required amendments in line with regulatory provisions under the Land Public Transport Act 2010. "We have complied with Apad's instructions and submitted all necessary appeals and supporting documents as part of our efforts to ensure that our operations align with the legal and compliance requirements set by the Transport Ministry and Apad for all e-hailing companies," he said at a media briefing today. The meeting marked the third between Maxim and Apad ahead of a final decision by the ministry. Present were Maxim Malaysia director Mohd Hazwan Musley and Apad deputy director-general Masita Mat Isa. Mushfique added that the company has followed all instructions issued by Apad and remains fully committed to regularising its operations. He also said that Maxim would continue to serve the Malaysian market and reaffirmed the company's intention to operate in full compliance with the law. He also assured drivers, passengers, and stakeholders that Maxim remains dedicated to supporting the community it serves. "The company's priority is to safeguard the livelihoods of its legally registered drivers and ensure they can continue operating without disruption. "Our drivers are the core of our company. We are working continuously with the government to ensure full compliance with all regulations imposed on e-hailing operators," he said. Last month, Maxim announced that it was in discussions with the authorities regarding the directive to cease operations from July 24. This followed Apad's issuance of cease-and-desist letters to two e-hailing platforms, inDrive and Maxim, for allegedly operating without proper authorisation in Malaysia. Transport Minister Anthony Loke had said that while appeals may be submitted by the companies, the final decision will rest solely with him in his capacity as the minister. When asked about measures taken by Maxim following a raid by Apad in 2023 over alleged permit violations, Mushfique clarified that the agency had only issued a notice for operational improvements. "It was not related to the cancellation of our licence. It was simply a notice requesting us to respond with details of the improvements we would implement in our operations," he said. Regarding driver compliance, he said Maxim ensures that only those with complete and valid documents are granted access to the system and allowed to accept passenger requests. He also said the issuance of the cease-and-desist letters has affected the company's revenue, although her did not disclose the extent of the losses.

Iran says new round of US talks planned for Sunday
Published on: Tuesday, June 10, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 10, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: Iran's uranium enrichment reached 60%, violating the 2015 deal's terms and edging closer to the 90% level required for nuclear arms. (AP pic) TEHRAN: Iran's foreign ministry has said a new round of nuclear talks with the US is being planned for Sunday, after President Donald Trump said it was expected on Thursday. 'The next round of Iran-US indirect talks is being planned for next Sunday in Muscat,' foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said in a statement Tuesday, adding foreign minister and chief negotiator Abbas Araghchi would this week attend the Norway's Oslo Forum, a gathering of conflict mediators. Advertisement Iran and the US have held five rounds of talks since April to thrash out a new nuclear deal to replace the 2015 accord with major powers that Trump abandoned during his first term in 2018. On May 31, after the fifth round of talks, Iran said it had received 'elements' of a US proposal for a nuclear deal, with Araghchi later saying the text contained 'ambiguities'. Iran said on Monday the US proposal was 'lacking elements' reflective of the previous negotiations and that it would present a 'reasonable, logical and balanced' counter-proposal to the US through mediator Oman. Trump has said new US-Iran talks this week could clarify if a nuclear deal is possible to avoid military action. He added that the latest meeting with Iran was expected Thursday, although a source familiar with preparations said it would more likely be on Friday or Saturday. Iran and the US have recently been locked in a diplomatic standoff over Iran's uranium enrichment, with Tehran defending it as a 'non-negotiable' right and Washington calling it as a 'red line'. Iran currently enriches uranium to 60%, far above the 3.67% limit set in the 2015 deal and close though still short of the 90% needed for a nuclear warhead. Western countries, including the US, have long accused Iran of seeking to acquire atomic weapons, while Tehran insists its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
